The Katoa situation is brutal. A couple of points that serve as reminders

- For anyone complaining how soft the game has become, it’s for reasons like this. Once upon a time, no one would have bettered an eye at him actually playing. Protocols are in place now to prevent it. I’m not sure who dropped the ball here in not following them but someone should answer for it. I don’t like how soft the game has become either, but it’s a necessary evil for the game to exist in this day and age.

- I’ve said over and over that I don’t understand when players are so bla’ze during contract negotiations, saying things like “Im in no hurry” when things like this can happen at any moment. Your value can go from seven figures to zero in the blink of an eye. We’ve seen it with Dwyer, Tuiaki, Alex McKinnon, yet players turn a blind eye. Could you imagine if Katoa was in the middle of a contract tug-o-war where he’s being offered close to a million dollars? Suddenly he’s waking up the next day on skid row. I don’t get it.
Good post, mate.

Bird has a lot to prove over the summer before I would consider him being picked again the majority of his games were just meh.
I've been pretty disappointed with Bird actually. I was hopeful he'd go well as a centre tbh.

Not as in disappointed in him - I think he tries his guts out every game - just disappointed his body is beyond it now.

Thankfully he's not on megabucks, and can possibly cover centre, so no qualms with him in the squad at all.

agree, but I don't think any of those golfers would necessarily regret taking the cash. we'll still see a fair few NRL players make the jump these next 3-5 years.
If it lasts that long - living in Capetown or Madrid for 6 months every year and travelling to Europe and South Africa every other week may not be appealing to those who find travelling to the Gold Coast or Perth draining.

Lomax and Paps better be getting their coin up front....sounds suss to me
Paps has had alot of injuries if the money is upfront great if not don't go it's a crazy risk

Would have to wonder what country the contract is valid in and what the local law is

Can the code just go bankrupt and not pay ?

Do people in the countries where the franchises are even know who these NRL players are ?

If i was a manager I would make all my players have income protection

I know a young guy in his early 50's who had a heart attack then 12 months later back at work had a fall he works on an ABN and did his knee and the doctors won't operate on his knee because of the heart attack

So now his income protection which he paid 15K a year for will pay him 12K a month until retirement age

MKR has just started on channel 7, my wife just heard one of the first cooks used to play for the Wests Tigers and the rorters, his name is Will but no surname mentioned as yet, does anyone recognise him, maybe Will Smith ???
Willie Mataka. Played 6 games of first grade from 2009 to 2010. Ended up winning MKR grand final.
