Yep, Balmain definitetly tried to play the clock down

Wtached the whole game again a few years back
I was shocked at how much cheap ball the Tigers turned over - they were mostly internationals on that team and they played like Rookies.

Been a while since I saw it again, but I think Pearce got tackled and gave a Hail Mary or just lost it cold and Raiders were off with the ball. A game is a game, but they were too flippant with possession and it was one of them days where not much stuck for em.

Raiders just kept chipping away, playing their game off the back foot until it opened up for them, when it did they made it count.

I don’t think it was a lack of luck - they didn’t respect the footy nor the lead.
So much low percentage footy from Balmain and the qlders just did what qlders do…
Kept Playing the game and not the clock.

You hear the old Tigers fellas (outside Pearce maybe) and they have plenty of excuses.
None of them say we just thought we had to turn up.
Game was lost before they got on the park.
You mentioned I presume Queenslanders, they did get one over them in a Panasonic Cup final when the Tigers beat Brisbane, cracker of a game.

One of the tries Scotty Gale cut them to pieces through the middle, man that guy was fast especially off the mark early in his career.

Was there, I stormed out of the ground at full time only to find Ieft my motor bike helmet under my seat…had to battle my way back into the ground to retrieve my helmet against the retreating crowd. What a crap day
I watched the game at a mates place in Queanbeyan. I was the only Balmain supporter there. Afterwards I had to walk home past the Queanbeyan Leagues club, (then home of the Raiders), they were going off. Great night.

the harrigan penalty against McGuire changed the momentum of the game
plus Ryan replacing blocker and Sironen for hardwick and Pobjie was stupid

Wayne Pearce didn't have a good game in the 89 GF

Met him once back when he was playing footy, in the surf at Bungan beach, good dude talked about all things footy and surfing, back in the days when you didn't have to keep your eyes peeled for Bull sharks and Great Whites.

Wild wild man in the 1980's in clubs in Cronulla the woman would fall over each other to get to him and he would not say no ....what's that line from that funny marvel movie when the actor talks about if you had a blacklight

Yes, I was there too.
Never made it home that night… my missus was not impressed.
Everyone who knew me also knew better than to come near me and offer a ‘sorry’.🤣

I was at the 88 and 89 GFs. 88 was a great effort to get there and once Ellery got taken out we lost our X factor - was disappointed but proud of the effort to get there.
But 89 we beat ourselves - albeit by a squad that was just beginning to show what a classy outfit they were. Have never watched a replay and occasionally will see snippets of the highlights and low lights. So many critical incidents that shoulda coulda - was high at halftime and destroyed by the end of the game.
