Literally a cautionary tale about what happens when don’t keep kids grounded . Large is 20 now . There was talk he was going to be Benji like teen debutant … now it’s not even clear he will be a five eighth. I know he’s going to have a long great career , but I’ve said it before he was the generational talent we all talked about long before Galvin had his growth spurt , and Makasini proved he could transition his raw abilities into older age groups .

Onitoni Large is 19y.o this year, he played in all the same teams as Makasini.
He is playing his first game as in NSW Cup this weekend and will be interesting to see how he goes.
I don’t think Manly have any plans to let him go as it looks like they ideally want he and Joey Walsh as their long term NRL halves.

I think their social media post means there is an opporturnity for them to play with Tyrone in 2028 when the Tigers play the Chiefs in PNG.

Ok then. Don’t really agree, not many ex pats families feel safe in a country rated in the top 3 worst cities for crime. So what u reckon the wife and kids just go to the shops?? Delusional

I just know people that lived there with their families when I was an expat myself in Jakarta.. their wives and kids made it through unscathed .. perhaps the company we worked for went that extra yard to try and keep them safe …

Man you did this last time I said what I said ! You either read what you want to read or you don’t read it at all mate . “Generational”. Was the word outta the joint . Then he wasn’t . He might get there one day . And I genuinely hope he does . But we would have messed up royally chucking the coin at him that was reported at the time . Exactly the same issue as Galvin . Thats what I’m talking about. Im saying all this because we make really bad mistakes overvaluing our juniors , and chuck wads of cash at them . He’s barely nsw cup level . And that’s fine . Generational = once in a generation .eg. Benji Marshall , Brad Fittler , Laurie Daley , Joey John’s . Other sports . LeBron james , Lionel Messi , even the new kid at Barca right now . He’s what 18 ? I can’t remember his name . Jude Bellingham , Harry Kane . These kids who were stars before they could get in a nightclub in the USA. And Thats what the word was about Onitoni. 10 years ago we would have screwed his development offered him a gazillion dollars . And it would have been a mistake . It’s worked out great for everyone his trajectory is far more granular and generic .

Can you advise me why we wouldnt have an NRL club if it werent for hbg?

The way I understand it is that they made a business decision that in return gave them 90% ownership of an NRL club.

Was the club ready to fold? Did we have no other suitors? Was no one else in the world interested? Were other investors given the option?

I am not connecting the dots as to how they saved the Wests Tigers - because we have 2 fans that are billionaires and would have been open to complete ownership.

In Australia, your safety is that your society is largely peaceful and if there is a disturbance. Police will come.

In India, many people say "you will never call the police". Why? because they will ask for a bribe and generally make things worse unless you are important enough that they will do what you say. Ofcourse take this with a grain of salt, it's probably 1990's India and less so current India which has modernised beyond belief (the Indian hospital system is probably better then Australia's in many areas for similar funding).

In PNG, if you are lucky the police is the local rascalboy who was given a uniform to try and nullify him. The police are there to confiscate alcahol on Friday and not much else.
However your security is through your tribe. You are a foreigner and therefore very important (why? I do not know). But if your local community wants you as a teacher or doctor, no one will harm you.

That said, you run over a person/child. You are either dead or driving straight to the airport.
Affairs can be handled the same way. Even in Australia girls will throw themselves at NRL players.
Imagine facing a tribal life where your wage < $50 and suddenly a NRL player who earns more then your entire village turns up.

The players will be fine, till someone does something really stupid.

Outside of Moresby is still relatively safe, although a friend of mine wife was car jacked and raped near Lae in the nineties.

It’s a shame they have not been able make the place safe as it could be one of the great tourist destinations on the planet. Sadly corruption from the top to the bottom is the main thing holding them back. Similar to Australia so much wealth has been mined out of the country only for the rewards to end up in multi national pockets or very wealthy individuals rather than the general population getting a share.

I mean no one, and I really do mean NO ONE else in NRL history will ever offer their 29 year old winger a 5 year contract. I mean that's retention and team suicide in the one deal.

We never really saw if Richo had value to add to the retention process. Benji got Luai, May(s) and Turuva here. Benji also lost Papalii, Stef, Bateman etc.

I still view it as down to the coach. Manly and Eels have shocking boards and politics yet people stay.
However if we loose Benji OR we start loosing again I could definately see walkouts.

We desperately need to appoint Shaun as our permanent CEO, it’s probably more crucial than any player re-signing at the moment.
I think he’s doing a great job and there is nothing to suggest HBG are not happy with him, so you would assume it could only be dollar figures that is holding it up.

I guess tigers have done the right thing by his family. PNG have just offered to do better by then.

You responded to my post advising me that HBG saved the Wests Tigers NRL club from folding.

Now you dont want to engage because I am asking how?

You are well aware no rugby league club survives without financial backing.

Were HBG the only ones in Australia willing to invest in the club?
Was the club ready to fold and they came in last minute with a cheque?
Was this not just a business that gave them 90% control of an NRL club?
How about Harry or Laundy, were they floating around and interested?

In the best interest of the forum, it would be better we discussed it and moved past it.

I am giving you the opportunity to convince myself and others who want to know why we need to be so grateful to HBG for "saving the club".

Good post. Hopefully the Chiefs will bring the nation ahead. There are so many incredibly beautiful locations and people in New Guinea. If I were a player, I'd be headed to the Loloata Island Resort not far from Port Moresby. It is a dive resort with chalets along the foreshore and safe.

You're a real angry ant aren't you?

No one is schlepping around the streets of Port Moresby looking for a cafe on Sundays, but to think nowhere is safe shows your complete ignorance. In amongst the crime and poverty are luxury places where the rich go which are safe and protected.

Not the same lifestyle for sure, but in these hell holes, the rich carve out their playgrounds too.
