Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Spoke to someone today with deep experience around professional sport, player finances and the NRL system generally. Came away thinking the whole ecosystem is far more complicated than most fans realise.

The PNG tax issues apparently aren’t straightforward at all from an accounting and structuring perspective.

The player agent system also sounds messy. I didn’t realise clubs effectively deduct agent commissions directly from player payments. It also sounds like agency arrangements can be very difficult for players to exit once signed.

More broadly, the impression I got is that rugby league still operates a bit like cowboy land in parts. Different ownership structures, different incentives and a lot happening behind the scenes that the public never sees.

Everyone still loves the game, but I did leave thinking players are probably not as well looked after as many people assume.

Just thinking though he isn't playing great. Wondering if dogs chip in or if he takes a pay cut...probably will cash in with PNG
Try to see if he can make it in the NFL as a punter next season, if not cash in at PNG. Either way he’d be making stupid money (minimum guaranteed is over $800k USD if he signs to the 52 man squad, or $17.5k per week on practice squad)

players are pampered, with all the prof help from dieticians ,mind benders, etc etc.
And clubs being held accountable for sending a money transferre to their agent.lol
Very interested in any more news /info on the PNG tax issues if they come to light

Telegraph saying that the Tigers are all but locked in as one of the Vegas teams next year ( apparently it’s an away game as well 😳)

Anyone planning to go over for it ? The novelty is gunna wear off soon … maybe the NRL can squeeze 1 more year out of it?

So the club finally relented? I’m not a fan of the concept, but digging their heals in was bizarre. We are the only club who has expressed negativity about it. If it’s because they worry it affects their preparation, no club that has gone over has claimed that. Apart from that, not sure why they were so reluctant.

With where the club has been over the last 4-5 years I can totally understand why they didnt want the Vegas distraction to start the year

Payten was against it....

wasn’t it Richo who was the one that had concerns ? I think Shaun has said publicly before he is fine with it… Im sure the players will be ok with it ..

Could have just been Richo reading the play and realising they weren’t going to be picked to go any earlier than 2027..

Wouldn’t be surprised if a few of the old blazers on the board get a free trip over there!

Ease up Bro...
We were on the back of 3 Wooden Spoons, Boards coming and going, and haven't had a permanent CEO in charge for most of the years it's been going.

It was more Richos' stance than a Club Stance, Apparently some higher ups didn't like it either.
There's also been other clubs not as interested in it as the Glamour Clubs,
They just didn't have Richo being vocal about it.

Dogs have apparently pulled their interest in Metcalfe, he wants $1m, I'm fairly certain they have screwed their cap to the point its not possible. Also don't think he is worth $1m, looks like the dragons will pay him that though. I wouldn't mind the Tigers having a crack at getting McInnes for a couple of years..plays above his weight and leads line speed and physicality in defense. Only issue is he will fall off a cliff sooner or later (if not already) and you would think with the passion he shows and the way he plays that the Sharks would want to keep him, the fact they don't is a warning sign.
