Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Raiders have 3 first grade hookers.

Feel like Braileys the one that could be an option.

Yep, Sticky is doing it right.

Pattie was playing 15-20 min cameos. He looked good, but he doesn't yet have the engine and physicality to be a 60+min hooker in the NRL, and playing little minutes isn't going to develop him properly. Ricky brought in Brailey so he can be the 1-2 at NRL with Tom Starling, and now Pattie is playing 60-70 minutes in NSW Cup developing his craft, and making sure he'll be a gun when it's his time.

I like the way both they and the sharks developed players.

Chevy Stewart is probably ready for FG but he's been waiting in the shadows there.

Sharks along with their run of outside backs who seem to stay in cup and then arrive, looking like stars.... Iro, Stonestreet and next man up, Michael Gabrael.

I w

Second row depth still an issue. I would be waiting to see a bit more of Roberts first before knowing whether he has more potential than Sukkar

Sam Fainu
Pearce-Paul
Sukkar
Roberts
Mitchell Taotua
Godinet

Sukkar was outstanding in the early season NSW Cup games. Probably needed a little more urgency around the ruck defensively, but he was leading the comp in average PCM per game. Unfortunately, he paid for the entire right edge debacle v Sharks, and seems to be injured now as he hasn't played any grade since Cronulla.

Roberts can be a damaging ball runner if he damn well just has a run-first mentality. From what I've seen in his Flegg and Cup games, he's been looking to offload and ends up with soft carries - totally the opposite of Sukkar. If he approaches it the same way week-to-week in the NRL, he'll get dominated easily. His body size helps. Still Flegg age.

Mitchell Taotua. Dunno what to make of this kid. Can be aggressive in both attack and defence, but seems to have brain fart or two in him per game. Has been selected regularly at NSW Cup level ahead of Roberts even, but didn't play the last round when they really needed backrowers - if NRL has an injury crisis than it stands to reason it flows down the grades.

Godinet played NSW Cup the past weekend. Seemed overwhelmed as a starter against a strong Penrith pack and back 5. Came off after only 20 mins, but was better in his second stint. SG Ball age, so probably struggled with the step up to open-age footy.

Exactly. They get them to do their time in lower grades. That's where they develop and become ready to play in first grade. In contrast, Wests Tigers have used NRL as a development grade.

The Newtown team that won the 2019 Grand FInal had Kennedy, Katoa, Mulitalo, Trindall, Rudolf, Brailey, Wilton & Talakai who are all still at the club. Also had Sorensen (penrith) and Joliffe (Titans). The strike rate not only to their NRL team, but also, regular first grade appearances is phenomenal. Iro and Stonestreet have played over 40 games each in reserve grade. Chevy Stewart 66 games!

Attard (8), Haywood (3), Tavana (11), Makasini (4) and Roberts (14) have played very little, yet they're all being pushed. Ridiculous! Da Silva played 14 games and the club built up to think he was an NRL player. Galvin has only played 1 game, and that was when he wanted out.

Not sure theres all that much we can offer Dogs unfortunately. Floated Skelton for Xerri yesterday but they seem ok for depth on the wing with Rinakama waiting. Maybe a a guy like Tony Sukkar who has been jumped by Roberts?

These swaps barely ever happen but its nice to dream
Skelton came to us from the Dogs coz they didn’t want him, so hardly going back.

A chronic injury!
Sounds [hopefully] like a case for early retirement.
His extensive history of crap form to support an early retirement is looking better.
A lie detector test could help sort out whether it's his arm or heart? haha
I feel physically sick when watching some of toas lame efforts in defence, he really does his best to avoid contact and responsibility while attempting to look like he is doing his job .. he eels his 5 metre distance from wherever the ball is and the pretend to be effort he makes only to “fail” is juts not acceptable for a professional athlete..
Even when all our players are fit, we still have a glaring need for a gun right centre.

I'd love May and Makasini to lock down the left. But who is good enough to partner Turuva on the right? Toa and Herbert backups at best. That should be a priority signing, preferably for the rest of the year, but that is highly unlikely so will have to makeshift until then.

We could play Maka (LC) and Luke (LW), with May on the right with Turuva like in our first game... but i think May and Makasini could be dominant together on the left and would want to build on that pairing. Plus Luke is leaving.

We need a miracle to drop into our laps like what happened with Taylan. But what's out there that fits the need? Xerri prefers the left. Ramien? An international player? OR shifting someone like Latu or Doueihi there. Don't love that.
Joey Manu on a short term contract would do nicely at right centre

If Toa's lack of defence and desire to not possibly hurt his shoulder again- maybe its in his head- get him to a sports physcologist? I know when I did my knee and after op I was scared to try to use and afraid of 'future pain', not wanting to hurt it again. I would think they have already done that, but who knows??
