Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

When you look at current recruitment, we have signed two fringe first graders at other clubs
Not overly inspiring for 2027 when you look at other sides around our level recruitment
Averillo would not be a fringe player at many other clubs, the Phins have an embarrassment of riches in the outside backs, someone posted on here many of their teams have made finals in Queensland.

So, at full strength and if we pick up some useful depth over the summer you're writing our next season off already.

I see no sense in moving him on now when the roster keeps improving season to season,
Is that why we went back down the ladder this year? And spare me the injury cop out.You don’t think the Wahs and Knights didn’t get hit hard? The Wahs lost 3 halfbacks. Newcastle lost their million dollar halfback. Plus Lucas and Ponga have had stints on the sideline too.

It's not a cop out, they were crucial and of a higher number but if you want to break it down further look at the other team's level of cover, their depth was far superior, is that not what destroyed our season.

Averillo has struggled to find a starting position at both clubs he has played at

If Mielecamp can't " shake a few trees" and find some healthy coconuts we are in for another finals free season in 2027

Nah, it’s a cop out when you see how other teams reacted. Injuries weren’t the reason we still had games where we conceded 60. This season was a typical Tigers season. Jumped out of the blocks, then once the grind hit and better teams started hitting their stride, we buckled and limped home like we always do. And don’t forget the annual player drama. After 15 years, and last years wooden spooners about to play a prelim, it’s grating.

Miekekamp doesn’t control our recruitment and retention, does he?
For the past couple of years, Benji has been given full control of our recruitment and retention with the assistance of Shannon Gallant, so I assume that stays the same while Benji is our coach.
You are correct in saying we still need a few more signings, otherwise our depth will be no better, potentially worse than this season.

Well not like you I will form an opinion when he puts on our jersey and runs out for us, you never know he might surprise you, especially working on the outside of KPP.

The team is screaming out for speed, I welcome his addition.

If you may remember Richo would talk about " shaking some trees and see what falls out " .....I was just using the term as a joke
And I would imagine that Benji would seek Richo for advice or connections to help with recruitment
I don't imagine Mielecamp has the same connections Richo had , not knocking Shaun at all... but he is far less experienced NRL wise

Injuries impact the outcome for every team and especially those squads who suffer more than their share than others.
Testing the strength of depth is not a position any club wants to have to rely on - there is a reason Melbourne didn't make this year with all the same systems in place and the best coach in the game - for once they didn't have the quality of players to cover their injuries. It's not an excuse its a reality.

He is definitely an upgrade ......but as usual some of our fans are treating this like the second coming of Reg Gasnier
Keep the expectations realistic is all I ask
I bet if you looked up the odds of us making Top 8 there will be a lot of sides ahead of us
Or maybe like the press the bookies are liars as well

You’ve only gotta look at Luai to be reminded you have to take whoever we sign with a grain of salt.

Do you not think all of us are feeling the pain, what do you suggest we do, keep on whining about it on here constantly how's that going to make things any better.

And for gawd sake don't say get rid of the coach, that will just set in motion another cleanout, probably of our best players who came here to play under Benji.

If that's what you wish for, get ready for another 5-year plan, going on to create an ugly loop that's lasted for 15 years and counting.

Stating the reality isn’t whining. I’m not saying anything people weren’t saying two weeks ago.

We’re screwed with him. Damned if you do. Damned if you don’t

It will be 5 years of pain with him. He’s not up to it.

Wiedler/SMH:

It was a flashpoint on a night out that is the stuff of the NRL’s worst nightmares. A look into the price of fame of a big-time player.

When five internationals had to deal with a member of the public who pulled a knife on them – or, more specifically, on Tigers forward Terrell May.

The incident has been kept quiet from the NRL and the Samoans. But it was the final straw for May, who left camp the next day.

He had other issues going on at home. He was worried about his little brother Taylan, who would have been in the squad but was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Taylan had been through his own troubles and Terrell didn’t feel right being away at that time.

But back to the night in question.

His target was May, who is fiercely proud of where he grew up. May, who can handle himself, reacted by grabbing a stool to go after the knife-wielding youngster. It was instinctual. Fear and shock turned into anger, and he had to be held back by his teammates.

As a witness to the incident explained to me, there was a chance the teenager with the knife was going to find himself in danger from May.

The NRL said they did not know about the incident when asked for comment on Saturday.

That moment was not the worst thing to happen to May as part of that camp, and it’s not why he isn’t in the Samoan World Cup squad.

May wouldn’t go into the reasons for his absence when we contacted him to ask about the knife incident.

But what we have been told is that he has an ambition to captain the Tigers. To lead from the front. He is unhappy with what he gave the Tigers this year and genuinely believes he needs a big off-season to set himself up for 2027.

He also believes that, on form, he didn’t deserve to be part of the Samoa squad this time. May wants to focus on being a better player for Tigers coach Benji Marshall next year.

Bitter end for Tigers’ Luai era

The Wests Tigers are sick of Jarome Luai’s impact on their club and are hoping his no-show at the end-of-season awards night is the last time they need to deal with him.

Luai is braced for strategic leaks about his time at Concord, but it wasn’t the club that alerted the media to him not attending the presentation night – it was his own social media post.

Tigers assistant coach Brett Hodgson.

But Luai gets singled out, so it’s only fair to highlight the fact he wasn’t the only one who failed to front. And as far as we know, Hodgson still has an important role next year.

Defence coach John Morris was not present after being shoved out the door a few days prior, and no one would expect him to front.

There is no question pressure is piling on Marshall.

Eighteen months on from the ugly exit of Lachlan Galvin, whose management told the Tigers they had no faith in Marshall’s coaching, the word coming out of the Tigers is “regret”. There is mild anger and embarrassment as well, but it will never be conveyed publicly.

Luai is laughing all the way to the bank – courtesy of a tax-free contract at the Papua New Guinea Chiefs from 2028 andthird-party deals that come with it – and he is also upset with the way he was treated in the end by the Tigers.

The coach and his staff put their faith in Luai to establish a strong culture. Privately, Marshall believes that culture and the make-up of the playing group need to change.

The blow-up between Marshall and Adam Doueihi over a selection issue highlighted it.

It’s why the club is now trying to recruit “solid citizens” – like the Raiders’ Jayden Brailey. They should have a look at a homecoming for Manly five-eighth Luke Brooks. He’d probably return the barbecue they gifted him when he departed the club at the end of 2023.

The way Galvin was isolated by some at the Tigers has never been addressed, but there are those within the organisation who will privately concede it was wrong.

It was so bad that Galvin didn’t even want to entertain a $6 million, five-year offer from the Tigers and left for a three-and-a-half-year term at the Bulldogs worth about $700,000 a season. Some within the Tigers are calling it a textbook case of an inexperienced coach listening to his playing group.

Marshall is stubborn, but he knows change is needed. He’s the Tigers’ greatest player and a legend of the game.

Fire up ... Luke Brooks received a new barbecue from the Tigers as a leaving gift in 2023 after 11 seasons with the club.

But the truth is out there and can’t be ignored.
Weidler is turd… should just crawl back SBW’s backside.
