Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Let me think about this 🤔
A management company sends the club a highlights video of a young kid that they just got to sign a contract giving there company a percentage of the kids earnings for his/her career.
The video shows all of their highlights against what type of opponent (who cares)
The kid looks good.
Just double checking that on the video there are no missed tackles, dropped balls etc.
I can see how that’s better than getting a person to go out and observe with their eyes if a kid has in their opinion what is required to be a chance to make the top grade.
I am of the older generation so maybe it just me living in the past 🤷‍♂️
I'd argue a couple points here.
1) Surely if you can assess the quality of the opponents watching live, you can also assess the quality of the opponents by watching the video.
2) clubs getting sent video is nothing new. I recall reading Fatty's book many years ago about how he ended up at Manly, it was after his manager sent them a tape (there was a bit more to the yarn to it but that is what it came down to). That was in 1978 so being of an older generation shouldn't change anything.

I'm not saying boots on the ground don't matter but most recruiting is done in a tape room and has been this way for a long time.

The Fatty story was he scored an amazing 80 metre try from the scrum base for Weets v Valleys in a knockout semi tinal ( which I was at ) the goalkicker misses the conversion from in front and Wests loses by a point
When Arthurson was given the info about Fatty it was he was a defensive machine
So his manager attached Fattys try to the start of the video ....Arko says this kid can make 40 tackles a week as well .....Fatty to Manly

Yeah but he didn't attach the video to the start he fast forward the tape to that try

Never come across a poster here that goes to so Much effort to talk out his arse.
It’s like you think you’re the only bloke here with a TV or the internet to check this shit your write.

Where you getting your stats Vicious?
Schiller has barely played a game at centre in top flight.
Even in ressies this year he didn’t play one game at centre..
Check your facts.
I am talking about his whole career, not just one injury riddled season.
What are you arguing about, are you happy with Patrick Herbert and Tino Tavana as our first players called up for our right sided outside backs?
Surely you want someone better who has the physical attributes to threaten and worry decent to good opposition at NRL level?

Spoke about the forwards .....not one mention about defensive capabilities
Spoke about centres .....not one mention about defensive capabilities
You just don't get rugby league ....do you
You don’t get it, no defence will be good enough without speed and attacking ability that can stretch and worry the opposing defence.
It’s no longer the 1930’s where team full of grinders can consistently win games.
The best form of defence is attack, in case you haven’t noticed that’s the style of play that is getting decent results as proven in the 2026 season by both the Knights and Dolphins.

You can't win premierships without great defence

Again so Cleary , Robinson and Bellamy are wrong ....and your right .....I know who is probably right

But my point is don't even bring up defence once .....same as your post
comparing Skelton and Schiller

So the Dolphins and Knights won the premiership .....NO .....the Knights made the GF and were competitive in the GF because of their defence and the injury to Cleary

And the Robinson coached the premiership ....2nd best defence in the NRL

Defence is 50% of the game .....end of story....the defence rests

I Don't need to
- I noticed you deflect to other players I didn't mention rather than checking your stats?
(There's a shock)

By the Ramble above - We're assuming Schiller is such a player for you?
Again, His history is hardly enough to make such assumptions.

Show me a decent sample size of Schiller playing top grade at Centre.
Actually, You can't - So don't bother with that...
Or replying with a ramble that heads on a totally different tangent.

I'm not alone in recognising you don't know your arse from your elbow.

The Knights grinded their way to a grand final on the back of their defence.

I’d sat the video footage is the starting point to determine if there is interest.

Show me a sample of the likes of Cody Walker, and Jahrome Hughes etc playing NRL before the age of 24.
Plenty of good quality players spend quite a bit of tine playing Reserve Grade stuck behind some very good players in their same position before they end up getting regular NRL opportunities.
When talking about signing fringe players, there is not a lot of options that have previously played 1 or 2 good quality NRL games and are not ready for the old age pension, so common sense would tell you if you can get players that have previously shown they are capable at NRL level and are still only in their mid 20’s or younger, they are very shrewd depth signings.
Based on your theory of signing no depth players, we end up with the same results we did in 2026, do you like losing?

The Knights grinded their way to a grand final on the back of their defence.
Only on the finals.
They got tj the finals on the back of their attack.
Does that sound familiar?
You will find the Wests Tigers 2095 Premiership winning team was similarly very attack minded and their defence clicked on the finals.
Defence is a mindset and when a team is highly confident good effort when defending will likely lead to points down the other end, the defence generally improves because of it.
On the flip side when a team is defending well week after week, but not getting rewarded with any points down the other end, the defensive resolve ends up fading and they start leaking points, does that sound familiar?
Not only the capability of scoring points, but just the capability of making line breaks hurts the opposing teams attack as they are zapping energy and losing field position every time they defend a long line break.

Schiller I watch alot at the Raiders he's better than Tavana and Herbert he's an upgrade for the team but not a superstar that some people want he's reminds me a little like a Jason Moodie solid good player will go good at the Tiger's

Exactly.
Some of our supporters expect superstars as fringe players, obviously not understanding there is a Salary Cap to work with and not understanding the need for speed and line breaking ability within our team.

News Flash Super Coach

Replacing reserve graders with other reserve graders doesn't help win NRL Games.
Don't talk about winning - You've got zero idea on how that happens.

Your facts again shoot you in the foot

Two of the 5 highest scoring games in NRL history are from the 1930s

Only on the finals.
They got tj the finals on the back of their attack.

Its a short sighted strategy.
05 tigers failed miserably the following years. As did the cowboys after their premiership.
