Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Yes at junior level teams in our day had one big forward to deal with and probably had very little mobility or footwork
Now you could face 5 big forwards just as big with mobility and footwork

Add a few backs with those same characteristics
Smaller kids with skills get totally outmatched at that level and become more interested in video games and or girls

Yep.
You cant blame parents of smaller white kids not wanting them getting smashed by bigger islanders at the age of 12 or so.

Im in support of the weight for age concept but you can only play up or down one age group. So if you are deemed too big for under 12's you play 13's. Even if you are still the biggest in the 13's you wont be made to play 2 age groups up. If you are a tiny 15 year old, you play 14's but cant play 13's.

Geez PVL gets a bad rap. Sorry mods, but the game was on its knees during COVID. The NRL came up with the 6 again, its a bit annoying some of the calls, but the games is so much faster, created NRL W, has generated record crowds and ratings, got thw biggest TV deal ever, not sure what else he can do? Best administrator ever in my books
After covid we literally have nothing else to watch or anything else to do with our lives homeless man should be able to generate NRL clicks

Yeah you can't obviously use weights like they did in the 60s .....not that I'm old enough to remember that .....but I reckon playing 2 years up is the maximum that kids can deal with mentally
I would occasionally play baseball as a 12 year old in my Dads team if they were short
And even in a non contact sport it was overwhelming

I remember Steve Waugh making the observation that the reason he & Mark were so successful was in part due them being born at the right time of the year when it came to entering competitive cricket. They were essentially older at the time of registration than, say, a kid born 6 months earlier. He said that the extra time not only gave them maturity vs other kids, but that as they progressed & were more successful, they stuck around whilst other kids who didn't have that initial success left the sport to try something else. Of course talent & ability are key components, but as mentioned many times on here, when a player gets the chance to play rep footy, he usually returns a better, more skilful player for the experience. And that is why the Waughs became the legends they are cos they stuck around and developed their skill accordingly. I recall back in school I was almost a full year younger than the majority of kids, being born in July whilst most were New Year's Eve-conceived kids born in mid-September, early October of the previous year! After high school, when I was about 24, I met up with some Old Boys to play Basketball - they were shocked to see me standing over them at 6ft 2 whilst they had shrunk to about 5ft 10! I still couldn't shoot for peanuts! 🍻 🤣 🏀

Those two wld have had the talent to be successful regardless

Just to add to that, Nathan Cleary says he probably wouldn't be playing of it wasnt for the weight for age in NZ

SL aren’t even agreeing to the lifeline, ludicrous to me
They’d rather run it into the ground their way , than hand control to someone else. It’s suicide because the top clubs , with London and probably widnes will breakaway , and start nrl Europe .
French rugby will no doubt join nrl Europe , with both their clubs , and the international game will simply be played under the nrl logo , like gridiron and the nfl .

Having that level of competition in the back yard would of helped dramatically

The point was more about the players that Waugh said gave it away in relation to this discussion. How many young footballers are giving the game away because they are physically dominated at a young age? I would say way too many. I know I said to my son you will give it away after 12's. He played 1 extra year in 13's and I was very happy when he quit.

Look at the nfl, you have teams with losing records making playoffs then
Yeah that is a flaw.... But I would have it so each conference is different every year.... Basically, make it like a lotto draw, start with the first conference, 5 teams are drawn out of barrel to determine who is in that conference for that season only...

You'd think with the money the game brings in now some of it should be reinvested to ensure there's enough talent coming through to keep the gravy train going and growing.
If people are worried there isn't enough talent, make it a top 25 instead of top 30, that's an additional 100 players that can be utilised...

I don't think we had double digit injuries ....I think Parra or Knights did
That's not the point, the lack of depth with a squad of 25 will leave a lot of teams struggling when injuries hit.

Isn't that what you were trying to get across, it will happen with less injuries than double digit, especially teams under the top 8.
