Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

He got the Titian's into the 8 not long ago that's impressive.
We are also short of players with genuine tackle break and line break ability.
We are one of the worst, if not the worst team in the NRL in that area .
AD is close to our best tackle breaker and line breaker, so who is going to make the tackle breaks and line breaks if we get rid of him?
Even if you have Nathan Cleary in your team, he cannot do much to help if the team is very limited in way of tackle break and line break ability.

In terms of halfbacks that are realistically an option for us, Fogarty for two years subsidised by Manly could be okay. I guess there would need to be someone like Douehi moved on which may be a sticking point given his rep.
Im not keen on Fogarty, seems to wilt under pressure and we make sure we are under pressure in most of our games. Rarely win comfortably.

I apologise for butting into your conversation with kjng_sirro, but it’s a very good argument t and I am of the opinion that a largely no frills Jock Madden would look quite good at NRL level if he had the right amount of attacking flair around him.
We are 1 or 2 genuine attacking weapons away from having a genuine NRL quality attacking line up and that could be solved with natural improvement from some players we already have on our books, but until they show it, we are not quite there.
Lets just pray KPP Samuela Taylan and Averillo all have an injury free year

I agree with Jock being more than serviceable with some flair around him, he is your true number 7, but Jocks problem is his kicking game and his reliance on having another half that can kick too especially long.
@innsaneink I think you asked earlier who is Jock gunna learn off? Good question as we’ve no halfbacks as coaches, and I can’t answer that one, but I would be getting the best kicking coaches on the planet, one form the round ball and one from the oval ball codes. Give jock time with each. If his kicking game was on point all we need is some flair around him.

Then there’s his D?

Anybody know if we're looking at extending Ethan Roberts? I think he has done well.
Massive potential, I’d be trying very hard to lock him up for a few more years.
I believe Ryan Carr is extremely good at identifying and working with players who have massive potential, but need improvement with their attitude and/or confidence.
I reckon RC will quickly identify that Ethan Roberts is a potential superstar if he works hard and commits to start playing with more energy, more intent and more aggression.

Check out the pack he was playing behind the Titans are perrenial underachievers. Good kicking game and solid FGer and clearly Manly think he is not worth whst they are paying him - not trying to change opinions its just mine.

The fact that we have regularly had a sub standard kicking game for so long is the part that makes Jamal Fogarty well worth considering.
It’s a bit of a damned if we do, damned if we don’t type situation.

Genius details in Wests Tigers’ failed ‘Hail Mary’ poaching play

Michael Carayannis

Wests Tigers should be praised, not mocked, for their Hail Mary play which could have seen Nathan Cleary turn out for the club.

The Tigers shocked many when it was revealed they had formally tabled a $3 million package deal for Cleary and his long-term partner Mary Fowler to entice Cleary to the club in 2028.

Fowler would have been signed by the Central Coast Mariners – with Holman Barnes Group owning both the Tigers and the Mariners.

The pair are both off-contract next year.

What chance did the Tigers have of securing Nathan? Next to nil. Until the Tigers started to think a bit differently.

The idea was the brainchild of Tigers boss Shaun Mielekamp, who in a previous life successfully attracted sprint sensation Usain Bolt to the Mariners.

Mielekamp’s intimate knowledge of soccer in this country helped. Coach Benji Marshall was naturally on board with the club recognising they needed some leadership to help to guide this young team.

Mielekamp started to plot the move about two months ago knowing he couldn’t secure Cleary on his own.

The tipping point was when Fowler returned to Australia to assist with Cleary’s recovery from serious injury.

By November 1 they were ready to pounce.

They had done the work in the background.

Of concern was Fowler’s rich Adidas deal after she inked a $10 million, five-year contract earlier this year.

That deal, the Tigers learnt, had some parameters around playing in a tier-one competition. The A-League Women would see her dip to being a tier-two athlete, which would impact the value of the endorsement.

Mielekamp needed the help of Holman Barnes too, who eventually signed off on making Fowler easily the highest paid domestic women’s soccer player - and potentially the biggest earner across either A-League competition.

The Tigers genuinely believed they were a chance. Even as recently as this week, they were told by Cleary’s camp to put in a formal offer. They did so.

A $3 million a year contract for three years – split between the pair.

It is understood Cleary stood to earn $1.8 million and Fowler would have doubled her current playing salary at Manchester City by signing with the Mariners.

Holman Barnes chief executive Daniel Paton – who sat on the Tigers and Mariners board – signed off on the deal.

His shock removal in recent days would not have helped the situation given he has been stood aside pending an investigation.

There has been angst among some on the Holman Barnes board about the push to help fund soccer programs, with some steadfast of the belief the club should be tipping all its cash into growing rugby league.

While the PNG Chiefs fielded a call on Wednesday that Cleary would not be coming, the Tigers did not. In fact, when they were contacted by Code Sports before the story broke on Friday afternoon, they were still holding out hope.

Unfortunately for them that glimmer ended about an hour after the story appeared online when Cleary’s camp formally rejected their offer.

He will now re-sign with Penrith for at least two more seasons.

And the Tigers hunt for premiership credentials goes on. And aiming high isn’t something which should be ridiculed. In fact, the Tigers should be applauded.
Board members upset that they are not pumping more money into League....have they been asleep the last 15yrs where we have been and continue to be one of the lowest funded RL programs. What a joke.

Fogarty is ok. Probably a good leader for the locker room. Not sure he's a big upgrade on Madden.

If we could move Doueihi on, I'd be happy to take Fogarty. As it stands we have 4 halves who should be in the mix for first grade. Rather not add another.

After the operation I doubt clearly would be the same player again. So the 9mil is probably not great plus we would have to move players on. We need forwards and depth in the forward's.

Fogarty every day of the week and twice on Sundays ..... Taking Fogarty has to contingent on AD moving on though.....
If AD is used correctly, he is required.
Unless other players can start providing spark in attack, he is our best and most likely to score off the back of pure effort alone.
This is where good coaching is essential.
