Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

He's played Tests and Origin so his experience would be invaluable atm. Not in great form but change of scenery in a team looking to rebuild might be just what he needs

What about Gagai as a fullback option? I'm hearing he looks set to sign with South's but I'm surprised his name hasn't been tossed up as a potential FB option for us.

is Lolohea a given? I'm hearing very mixed reports as his asking price was up around 800K/season. I've heard we are looking at Greg Eastwood/Aiden Guerra to bolster our 2nd row options as well. Any truth to this or just piss and wind by the media?

Lolohea offered $500K for 3 years by the Cowboys, beating the Tigers offer of $430K for 3 years (reportedly)

Fair enough. 500K too much for a guy languishing in reserve grade. He'll be lucky to make best 17 each week at cows so it seems like a dumb move for him given Cleary was offering him starting 5/8 for rest of this year and starting FB next year.

Souths reportedly on the verge of signing Gagai, beating the Roosters to his signature.
I have two questions… Why aren't we throwing the kitchen sink at Gagai, he seemingly wants out of Newcastle? Secondly, how the hell were the Roosters even in contention of signing Gagai, when they just got Tedesco? The cap is so dysfunctional.

I go back to a previous comment I made about the Roosters salary sombrero lol. Agreed I'm surprised we didn't make a play at Gagai. At South's he'll only get Centre/Wing $4 where we could offer him FB $$ and the opportunity to be our Starting FB.

Yeah I've wrote this before it's really annoying when people write he won't leave Newcastle now they'll write he's going to Souths…I'm hating Cleary atm he's not trying to get a good fullback he just wants a solid one..when we buy a crap fullback and by the looks of it we will ...everyone will be crying next year..to win the comp you need a classy fullback history tells us this and Cleary gunna get some nuffs nuffs cheap and say well we've got two crappy players now instead of one good one horay for his tight ass ways

Lawrence hasnt been playing badly. Mcqueen and lawrence both cant start though. We need a impact 2nd rower. Move mcwueen or lawrence to the bench.

Lawrence has been very good IMO. His work rate is good, he runs and hits hard in defence. He takes the tough runs when Woods doesn't. I have no problem with Lawrence shifting to the right and starting in the backrow next year. He will go even better with quicker play the balls from Packer and Matulino.

People will turn their nose up at this, but Lawrence is a better right side player than left. I have always said he is suited to the right and IMO this was proved a few years ago. We started the year with Rowdy left centre and Simona right. Both were struggling. As soon as they swapped sides both players had an instant improvemnet in form. I have no idea why Lawrence has been stuck on the left his whole career.

Personally, Elijah Taylor is the guy i would start off the bench. We need a big middle early. Lawrence and McQueen in the backrow, Packer, Matulino and Alioai in the middle. Taylor comes on for Alioai at 20 minute mark to play the rest of the game.

The only problem Lawrence has had is some dropped balls, everything else he has been very good.

Agree with the whole post KS - Too many people sell Rowdy short. RHS is his go!

I agree to win a comp you need a classy/solid full back who's defensively sound and offers another point of attack. Generally someone great under the high ball and solid kick returner. Hopoate and Gagai both tick those boxes I feel. Certainly not sure Lolohea ticks a few of those boxes so I'm not sure why we were so desperate to sign him. If we aren't going to go for a Gagai or Hoppa then I'd go for a Gordon and get one good year out of him while grooming someone else or testing player market again next year from one.

Who knows we may have approached Gagai, I have faith in Cleary and I don't think he'll let us down with the vacant FB spot. We still have plenty of options - Hayne, Barba, Dugan, Gagai, Ferguson, Watson, Lolohea, Hopaote, Gordan.

We'll get one of them imo, and I'll be happy with any.

I'd go for Hayne hard, but that's just me.

Glad your inside Cleary's head and know what he is thinking and the players he has put an offer to.

I don't understand why Tyrone Roberts name is not thrown up more often as a possible recruitment for 2018.
He has the ability to play numerous positions, pretty fair goal kicker, no nonsense player, who won't cost the earth,is only 26, solid clubman.
So there's your fullback and goal kicker, with plenty of money left in the cap to still get other signings on board.
For his versatility alone, he is great value for money, and lastly allows the club a chance to be able to compete in the market if Lolohea really believes he has a future in North Queensland.

It makes too much sense to sign him, What a handy player punches above his weight.
