Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Thanks for the updated list M&M. So, 2 spots at the moment, plus maybe McQueen moving on (there was some mention of this a while ago by POM I think).

It would be excellent to add a couple of impact forwards to that roster - guys like Fonua-Blake, Thompson, or fingers crossed, Marty. If we could just get a couple of that type we would be looking pretty decent to step up and compete for finals in 2019\. The roster needs refining still but that would be a good start after this season's playing group.

Impact front rower is what we need. I reckon manly might have no choice but to offload Marty now.

Fonua-Blake would be awesome. I'd take him over Taupau, but doubt we'd get him.

I went to the Manly vs Roosters game at Brookie because my old man is a Manly supporter, and it looked like neither Fonua-Blake or Taupau wanted to be at the club. I was watching them in the warm up and they were not commieted, focused or even doing the correct warmups.

I'd have a go at getting both of them with a pack looking like this:

8\. Twal
9\. Farah
10\. Matulino
11\. Lawrence
12\. Matterson
13\. Taupau

14\. Liddle
15\. Packer
16\. MCK
17\. Fonua-Blake

Anyone from manly not named Taupau or turbo bros we could potential look at signing. They've been whacked with a massive fine by the NRL for cap breaches. Could be a few players being let go early or not re-signed..

Dylan Walker
Brian Kelly
Are two that come to mind straight away. Who else would be worth looking at in the forums opinion?

Manly need a 30 man roster, they cant let them all go. Lot of talk Tapau is off to the Chooks and I guess we will hear more next week. He is on really big money so that will probably fix there cap problems. Kelly is probably on modest money so I doubt they would release him. Tom and Jake are going nowhere, but Dylan Walker might be a chance but comes with baggage that I doubt our club wants.

Kelly would be the one I would take in a flash

Why I left Marty off as an option. Don't think he'd be coming back here. Him and Walker going would go along way to sorting their cap issues out.

So I look at our 28 and think we will only see 1 more signing before the start of the season unless we release someone else as we will keep the 1 spot open like we did last year and like most clubs do. Looking at our squad the key position is the outside backs where we still need a winger/centre or 2.

I think you need to do a re-count.

????? We have 28 signed for next year at this stage out of 30 what re-count ?

Yep you are right. I misread your post. Still ….. I don't think Chris McQueen and Robbie Rochow will be in our final numbers. I think someone reported Cleary saying at recent function that we have 2 possibly 5 signings to come. So perhaps that the jury is out on a number of our existing (so called 2019 signed) squad members. Could include low contract $s (recently promoted) 3 development players and fringe 1st graders such as Tyson Gamble, Mahe Fonua and Oliver Clark. You could even find that Robbie and/or Benji sustain injuries in pre-season and decide to call it a day.

So feel that 28 are not set in stone and lot will depend how things pan out through preseason training ..... and more importantly ..... who the coach is over next 2 years. Because IF a new coach emerges before November I predict that this squad will definitely change.

Thanks for the list M&M. Rochow's complicated wrist surgery and recovery will likely further hamper any attempts to move him on, but what really concerns me most is the lack of height on our flanks, even though I admire the efforts of Thompson and the tough meters from Nofoaluma.

Maybe Smith can be effective if spending some time there and without knowing of any potential signings, really hope the club are looking to recruit some height and speed out wide.

I am most excited about Dylan Smith's progression and the prospect of him putting pressure on Nofoaluma on the right wing to hold his position.

Whilst we have Mbye at the number 1, we could try developing young Dylan Smith into a handy centre .. ?? He has good ball running skills knowing where and when to hit the holes as a fullback, so just wondering if he could turn these skills into a hole running centre, since he is so young .. (can't teach old dogs new tricks). Have Masters barging / punching the holes, then offloading to Smith / Momirovski running off him with their speed.

Storm are currently trying to extend Munster & NAS, neither will be cheap so tough to fit in the cap even with Slater's money becoming available
I'd be hoping we go hard for both, you never know if they may come up short or if they have to throw all their eggs in the one basket
It's interesting to look at the Storm roster on zero tackle and you see why they are so successful. They don't let the players that they want come off contract. All the 2018 contract expiries are either unproven players I guess they are prepared to lose or year to year great like Billy & Cam
Munster & NAS are end 2019 which is as out of contract as their guns seem to get

The ball handling of NAS worries me. Every time he takes a hit up he looks like he might spill it.

Munster's frontal lobotomy operation worries me.
:bash

The thing I took from Munster is that he was trying harder than anyone else and seemed to care the most, even if that did spill over a little. He's like Josh Reynolds with a stack more natural ability for mine

Needaname, this is the link plus if you go to the individual teams on the same site you see the years their players are signed up for beyond that

I've just checked that list and there's not much of interest. Obviously Pangai, George Jennings, Ethan Lowe, Brian Kelly and maybe Jason Oram….

They might have Slater and Smith's money to reassign. That should easily cover what they need and more.

Vave might be worth a look for bench prop/depth. But as you say, not much left in terms of quality on offer from that list.

Munster has already stated that he will only play for one of three teams - Storm, Roosters or Sharks, so we’re Nellie no chance I’m afraid. Just another example of elite players only wanting to play with other elite players. Alas the strong clubs only get stronger.
