Not 'kept'......'used'.

Kept a trade chip. Like the Storm are doin....

I do not see how this stuff is so hard to comprehend.

Anyway....lets move on.

Not being funny but so what? If matto wanted to have a sook, he can do that in RG. If he wants to make a career and be professional he will suck it up. Play his best to ensure that his next contract is what he thinks he deserves. Why is it up to Wests to pander to the whims of players?

Thats fine for Sundays but for 4 or 5 other days he has to train with the rest of the squad and thats not a positive environment.

I still dont see any upside to releasing Matto. None. People can say it was good for team harmony...rubbish. If you think every player at every clib gets along then your naive.

Of course every player at every club doesnt get along, but successful clubs haev good cultures and weed out players that are poisonous to it. Roosters & Melbourne the best at it. IMO this was an issue at the Tigers from around 2013 - 2016.

Despite it being true that not everyone gets along, I have never seen a reaction from teammates like the way the Tigers players reacted to Matterson leaving last year. I have never seen a squad openly mock a leaving player like that. IMO there is a LOT more behind the scenes with this one.

>
If this Stefano kid starts causing issues with training, do you think parra will hand him over?

The fact that Stefano isnt causing issues with training is exactly why we want him. He is a man albeit in a kids body.

>also, the talk of Matto falling out happened after he pushed for more money / new club. We all turned on him aswell. prior to that he was the golden child. ***Dont re write history***, the players (like us) turned when it was clear he was leaving the club. Not prior.

Dont re-write history?

Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Martin Tapau, Andrew Fafita...for gods sake even that scum bag Mitchell Moses left the Tigers for a new club and more money. THAT is history. Did the playing squad publicly ridicule any of them? Players are different to fans, its their job and they understand the business side of it. Players dont ridicule a player for leaving for more money, it happens 20-30 times a year and they all probably hope they get the opportunity. Matterson was publicly ridiculed by his teammates. Ive never seen that before. There has to be more to it that we know.

Your'e jumping around a bit here but I think I follow.

The only ridicule I remember was Chris McQueen posing near a cutout. Was Chris around when all those players you listed left? different times, different people?. Even so, how do you know what every other player at every other club does? do you monitor them all? was there rumors prior to Matto going about him being on the outer? he was future captain material was a pretty common thread around here. Robbie and him dancing together at LO (I think) to Lebanese music... Why do you think the players wouldn't act the same as this forum at being shafted. Of course they are gunna be pissed. They reacted after the act.

Until I see this upside Pascoe banged on about Ill continue to see this as a massive failure in man / player management by the Wests management team.

Anyways, enough Wests chat. Enjoy your long weekend mate!

Hard to imagine Michael Lichaa, as ordinary as he is, not doing a better job in the 9 than Mbye. Maybe we could just sign him for 2020 as cover pending Liddle's return. Cost should be fairly low and if it doesn't go well, no ties beyond this year.

There was more to it than the Chris McQueen thing but again, I said that ***I*** dont remember seeing that kind of public ridicule and there have been a lot of players leave for more money. All Im saying is Ive never seen that before and IMO it hints towards there being more going on behind the scenes than we know as fans. The Pom said exactly this as well. Of course I could be wrong....but...

More than one thing can be true at once.

Bit like the Rorters making Latrell languish in RG and refusing to release him to Souff's for nothing....oh..

...or you could refute what Geo said.

Seems to me there is a frequent chorus that "we should be more like...Roosters/Melbourne...", until it doesnt fit with the narrative.

My biggest concern is that BJ turns up, doesn’t buy into the culture and training regime, and ends up becoming a problem child.

If the club stays strong to pul him into line, his younger brother gets put offside. We are then carrying 2 players that don’t want to make the effort.

Stuart trains his team hard like Madge.
BJ will be fine.

The bigger concern is coming with 50 days to go.
If both BJ and AD joined thats alot of change & gel work required - our season start would be surprising if we started well.

I am excited about the prospect of BJ coming but I am also concerned that he has been excused from a couple of Raiders training camps as well as allowed a late return.

Joey is not the body type that you want a short preseason with.

So, use the common sense test mate.
You seem to defend them at every. single. point…which is fine. You are a fan, but so am I.

The "common sense test" is what nuffies at the pub use on Saturday afternoons to keep their conversation going.

You have an opinion, fine, state it as an opinion - "what I would have done is XXX".

Instead "absolute incompetency" and "we could have SIMPLY held Matterson until Stefano was eligible".

Tigers released Matto on 30/Oct/19. We weren't officially allowed to talk to Stefano until 01/Nov/19. Now maybe we could have held Matto in anticipation of going for Stefano, then releasing Matto as a deal. Or maybe Stefano tells us to get stuffed and we have Matto still hanging around like a bad smell. Or maybe Matto is pure poison and they wanted the dude gone. Or maybe they just didn't want to have Matto being paid out doing nothing, or worse, bringing the team down.

Or just maybe, we didn't have the funds or inclination to go for Stefano UNTIL Matto was released.

We just don't know what really happened. You don't know, I don't know. So don't assume that you do know what was the best action to take.

Because you misunderstand, I'm not defending the club, nor attacking the club - I don't have enough information to make an informed judgement, so I reserve judgement. You don't seem to understand the difference between actually defending the club, based on what you know as fact, versus not attacking the club because you don't have enough facts.

You are deadset becoming the new stryker.

No idea who 'stryker' is....

Simple facts are we caved in to two players....Parra got a potential 5-8 year half back and a potential Origin player. Facts.

We got no one. Facts.

Matterson was an ace up our sleeve......yet we dealt it before the transfer period even heated up.

None of the issues you mention could not have been handled. Matterson would have sooked....so what. Let him sit there and sook until we had a deal in place. Hung around like a bad smell? So what. Off season, tons of time to wait and make a deal. If we kept him a month longer we could have dealt him for Stefano....or part of a JAC deal....an Origin level player on 450 would not have been hard to move.

Let's agree to disagree...

Stryker is a mad guy

Ellery, for what it’s worth mate, I’d like to thank you for asking the tough questions. Not sure what to make of the defensive nature of some of the responses, but a very good question re Matto & Stef. It now appears to me that Eels did a very good job of keeping Stef a secret. I’d also like to pay some credit to our recruitment team , once they were able to talk with big Stef they moved swiftly and had him signed before the 22/November. I think we are going to look back one day and agree this signing to be of historical significance.

I think Latrell sent us all crazy (especially me) in regards to wanting/expecting new signings.

Fact is, we would have made the 8 last year, if Momo had kicked the whole season instead of Esan.

We lost an elderly Robbie, an Esan who'd given up trying, and a slimy worm.

We signed some really exciting juniors, we signed Big Lucy, still might get Stefano, still will probably get BJ.

The sky is not falling. We'll do well this year.

The sky might not be falling, but public perception which probably includes players, is we are a last resort, and we have really shown nothing recruitment wise with all these dollars to disprove this

Let me help you out here 20/40. The "defensive nature" of some of the responses, are the thoughts of people with a different opinion. Just as Ellery is entitled to his opinion and it is a good thing that he raises it and asks the "tough questions" as you put it, people with differing opinions are just as entitled to hold and express their opinions no matter whether you agree with them or not. Reducing these opinions to just a "defensive nature" is as belittling as if people who disagreed with Ellery saying he was mindlessly following an agenda. It is simply fans of the club having a different opinion.

Is it really though? A couple of gutter journalists from the Telegraph isn't public, let alone player, perception.

Lucy's only been here ten seconds and he's already talking up the club and telling his brother to come.

Benji's 80 years old and loves playing here under Madge so much he wants to stay here for another 80 years, on close to minimum wage.

But we all know officially we couldn’t have spoken to Stefano before 1st Nov, and given that he reportedly signed at the end of November, there’s no facts to indicate that we spoke to him before we released Matto.

And Parra were not allowed to talk to Matterson before November 1 2020, yet he was gone before November 1 2019, please

It's different when you are the one making the release, not the signing.

IMO $’s will only get you mercenaries. Winners want to play in a team of winners. We haven’t played finals footy in some time and we are still paying the toll for having had Potter, JT and subsequently Cleary as coaches, if you include the last year of TS that’s 2012 to 2018.

If we can keep our cool and if Madge can turn the team he has around And makes a finals appearance, I think our recruitment fortunes will change as well.

But no way no how should we in my humble armchair opinion be paying $600k for AD, no way, $450 max.

I don't think public perception matters at all. Player perceptions will change for each individual player and will change over time. Plenty of players appear to love the club. All that matters to me is that we make the best decisions that we can going forward. If we do that I think we can have a quality team that performs better.
