Kayne Kalache in the 9s (Bulldogs)
One to watch.

Realistic signing we could get if we wanted.

Only because he’s Lebanese or is he any good?

You guessed it !

Both.

Ya heard.

I posted previously about chasing Frizell. I think he could be the leader that our young pack could follow and would certainly provide some experience. I’d be prepared to offer him plenty as gaining a player like him might also go a long way to helping us become the destination club that quality players want to play for.

Tyson is an Illawarra player through and through. I could not envisage that he would want to spend so much time commuting to South western Sydney when he could remain on the beautiful coast at a club comparable to ours. We should be prioritising fast backs and if in the .market for a second row forward purchased that good young player the Titans purchased from the Knights

I reckon Frizzel is great but I don't think we want to get into a bidding war for him at the backend of his career.

Best post in a while.

This has been our issue at the Tigers for years.

Balin, Packer, Mats, McQueen etc

I think we need to remind ourselves that it's not about where our club is based (Parra and Penrith e.g. sign plenty). Players like Frizel will come to our club when we start achieving results.

I think our club being a retirement destination are officially over with Madge and others realising our FUTURE is with the youth ( their cheaper) and players in their mid 20's.

It is up to the club to prove that retention systems have undergone a huge overhaul and are up to the challenge. I don't want to watch the JACs and Papenhuyzens playing for Melbourne while our team has a chronic shortage of pace in the backs or, trading one of our brightest young halves prospects in years for an injury prone player who is way overpriced.

Wide running second rowers like Frizell need to be try scorers these days.Last year he scored 2 tries in 22 games. Over his career he scores every 7 games. The benchmark is Cordner who scores every 4 games over a longer career. Acutely aware of Frizell's deficiency after a long painful experience picking him to score first.

And what has Penrith achieved in recent years? Or Newcastle for that matter?

I'd only be interested if we could get him immediately. Otherwise a 29-30 year old who would want a 4 year deal on big money? Nah, i can think of a better way to spend 3.2 million

1stly - Better facilities and youngsters coming through
2ndly - We have bad reputation of a retirement village / non competitive club

This is changing

Fair enough, and thankfully yes it is changing, however I just think that many people’s comparison of our club with others is very skewed at times. Most of these clubs really aren’t all that much better than ours. There’s a few really good ones of course, then a gap to the rest.

Sure you can say they have better facilities, but I think there is way too much emphasis put on that. Greater individual football players and teams have been around for decades without the need for state of the art gym equipment or all the modern sports science garbage that we have today. Weights are weights, sand hills are sand hills, swimming pools are swimming pools and an oval is an oval no matter where it is. It’s still up to the individual and the team to put the effort in to get themselves fit and produce good results on the field. Sorry I’m old school, I just think footballers are a bit pandered to these days, modern facilities aren’t really going to make you a better player/team. It’s still up to you.

Whilst we may not have Penrith’s junior nursery, we do have a fair amount of youngsters coming through and we always have had. We have a far better junior base than many of the top teams, though our retention hasn’t been all that flash. In any case, for all of Penrith’s junior talent, their team on the whole have been major underachievers for quite a while now.

I think the reputation as a retirement village is more in the heads of us supporters than it is in the minds of players who might be looking to find a new contract. I know we've made some bad signings over years, but I think it was more due to a lack of funds than anything else - that is not a problem now.

And lastly I think we have been more than competitive for several years now. We are in the mix to make the top 8 just about every year. Coming 9th for 3 years is competitive, coming last for 3 years isn’t, yet that’s exactly when Newcastle were able to sign many of their bigger name players. They are still underachieving, but are still somehow able to attract top line players.

This is the popular perception of the Tigers, but honestly for a big chunk of the past decade our production of juniors was pretty terrible. After Moses in 2014, the best juniors to have debuted with the Tigers are JAC, Marsters and Suli (I'm excluding Liddle, Mikaele and Talau for now as we really don't know what sort of careers they'll have).

That's not good over half a decade, especially for a club that depends on producing its own players. It doesn't ignore a host of solid first graders - the type of contributor every club needs - either.

In 2015 these juniors made their NRL debut for the Tigers: Delouise Hoeter, Kyle Lovett, Nathan Milone, Mainai Cherrington and Lamar Liolavave. 2016 was better (Addo-Carr and Liddle) but basically no-one else (hello JJ Felise). In 2017, we had some young signings from elsewhere (Twal, Eisenhuth) and our own juniors produced Marsters, Suli, Bayley Sironen and Jeremy Marshall-King. In 2018 we didn't debut a single club junior.

Why is the conversation about Frizell starting again? Didn't the topic 'fizzle out' two months ago?

Anyway, to add my two pennies worth, I think he would be a good signing if he COMES NOW and, obviously for the RIGHT DEAL. Is he 29? if so, I'd offer two years 1.2 k as it seems to be the age when niggling injuries kick in and he's already had a few lay offs before now. I agree that to wait until he's 30 and offer three or more years is cap suicide. The fact of the matter, is that he's an established, quality first grader who has played well at the highest level. This means that he adds a new dimension to the Tigers as none of the current projected starters provide either of the aforementioned qualities. Additionally, he would provide toughness, a big motor and a winning mentality to our pack and, to me, that is more valuable than one fast winger.

Frizzel about 4-5 classes higher than all those players

Frizzel would be a great player for us but to be realistic i don't see him leaving the dragons he loves the club, its probably best to spend our money on a prop or lock who is younger but still has a lot of experience

Matulino was actually playing well for us before his injury imo, wouldn't put him in the same category as the others. Ballin should be in a category of his own, what a shocking signing that was.

But Hopoate was gre... naa I can't even bring myself to finish that sentence. Terry Hill, I see pros and cons there, though he was Wests earlier, I'm pretty sure.

Can't think of any others, so yes, you have my vote Tigerboy.

Ballin's signing was purely done out of spite to try and force Farah out. He was never gonna be any use to us on the field.
