I respect everyone's view on Benji but with limited funds i can't see we are in a position to sign a big name 6 or 7. In the absence of a signing, assuming we went with a Douehi, Mbye, Talau with Brooks, he's not exactly a bad backup on a pretty low salary, which gives us better spending options for the remaining 3 spots after only $200k for Benji
If we could pick a young half, say like Chanel Harris Tevita from the Warriors, I would feel differently about hanging on to Benji. Maybe I just answered my own question, perhaps we need to take a punt on an up and comer that doesn't cost the world

We will have our $337k cap fine to spend next year as well, Benji is part of the problem not part of the solution, we have to move on, keep him around the club in some capacity but not as a player

Yeah I had factored it in, regarding Benji, he is basically free with the veteran player allowance, pretty sure he's the only option for that

The thing with Benji is that he is low cost and therefore not the problem or anywhere near it. If he isn't the best option he won't be picked so he isn't holding anyone back.

We need to sign some quality players but it appears we have to get juniors and let them develop. An aging cheap half can slot into the team.

Anyway if Madge has a better option he will take it.

I really liked the idea of getting Cust. He fits perfectly with with Maguire is doing. Tough, well-priced, talented. I'd be shocked if we go anywhere near Widdop as he seems too old compared to what we've targeted so far. Wouldn't be surprised to see one of the big contracts loaned to someone else for next year. Even paying half of it allows us to throw solid cash at an up-and-comer

What a shame they are only paying them $27.50, a $50 Bunnings voucher and a pie and a coke under the Cap a week..

Wow 3 million
I can’t get those players under 3million.
According to the rich list.
Boyd $780
Crichton $750
Radley $500
J Moz $300
Hargreaves $700
$3,030 alone.
Not included is D Tupou and S Verrills and
B Moz.....

Interesting.
If only the NRL could be a bit better at putting 2 and 2 together.

Some of those knobheads' wages would be massively topped up with 3rd party deals yet the NRL released not that long ago that the Roosters TPA's were a measly total of 100k or thereabouts from memory.
Something most definitely smells around the Roosters version of the salary cap.

I remember when Angus Crichton left Souths for Roosters, he was being lauded as a million dollar a year player. Now it's $750k? I'm sure when he leaves it'll be more like $400k, then opening up the million space again for a new recruit.

Souths offered Crichton $800k a year, yet he went to easts

Had to laugh at Paul Kent on Matt Johns Podcast last night when he stated players are prepared to go to Easts on less money because they get good advice from Unca Nick on where to invest their money for their retirement.
Geezus, is that the line that they are peddling now?

Yeah. Sonnys accomodation and gym equipment diet etc isn’t required to be included in the cap yet $200 worth of toys is... haha. His the ultimate distractor Uncle Nick.

Oh and the rest of the players on the rich list at the roosters.

Tedesco $1mil
Taukeiaho $680
Joseph Manu $700
Luke Keary $700
Another $3080.

That’s 6.1 mill on 9 players.
3.5mill on the remaining 21.

It is possible they are under the cap.
If you look closely at their squad they have used a total of 24 players and up until last week before debuting Daniel Fifita have played no rookies plus including Drew Hutchison who plays this weekend and considering the 2 long term injuries of Verrills and Radley, Including Billy Smith That’s 23 of 26 regulars they have used this year.
The remaining 4 have not debuted for any club and therefore being the roosters can only be on a minimum wage. Totalling $340 for the 27-30 spots (don’t forget Asu was one of these and probably also on minimum wage.)
So there are about 16 players unaccounted for with about 3.2 million cap spread among them.
Which means the following players are on average of $200k.
Tupou
B Moz
Lam
Tupouniua
Faamausili
Butcher
Collins
Ikuvalu
Fifta
Flanagan
Liu
Aubusson
Hall
Smith
Hutchinson
Jake Friend.

Does the maths check out?

I can confirm teddy was signed at the roosters for 1.6 million and 600k of that was 3rd party deal

If there’s a young guy with potential we can sign to take benjis spot, we have to do it. Only way Benji should be in the team is if there’s no one else to fill that spot or we literally can’t find any half to replace him. Put Benji on the coaching staff

Sounds like Kent is off having a game of golf with uncle Nick soon.

We really need to move on from the old guard Lawrence and Marshall and bring in younger players. No one can take away the legacy of both players but playing past their used by dates appears counterproductive to all parties. Both should be retained by the club for off field work. If we cat get Flanagan then step up Madden or AD.

I have 21 for 2021 being Aloia, Blore, Brooks, Chee Kam, Douehi, Garner, Kepao, BJ Leilua, L Leilua, Liddle, Mbye, Mikaele, Momo, Musgrove, Nofo, Packer, Reynolds, Talau, Twal, Walters, Uto

Curly, I think we are in agreement.

The official list on the WT site has 20 of the above 21 - it does not include Momo (or it didn't when I looked last week).

If we add Momo to the 20 on the official list we get 21, which is the same as the list you include above.

The official list also shows 4 development players from this year moving to full contract status next year; namely, Bradley, Cini, Madden and Simpkin.

That takes to 25 as I mentioned in my post.

If we extend Eisenhuth, Clark and McIntyre we will have 28 in the squad and only 2 vacant positions.

If we give Benji another year which you suggest might be worthwhile, that will leave only 1 place to fill for 2021. Not much scope for upgrading the squad unfortunately.

Looking at the 21 I have listed there I estimate them at $8.15m based on records I have been keeping for a couple of years, not perfect for sure, but I'd think it's thereabouts

That leaves $1.75m for 9 players (2021 Cap is $9.9m)

Assume at least 3 development players at $115k each and McIntyre upgraded to $200k and we're at $1.2m left for 5 players

Get Benji for free with the veteran allowance and it's $1.2m for 4 players

Assume further that any saving on the 2020 cap was used to bring forward future dollars and it could potentially be as much as $1.7m for 4 players

I'd take Eiso for $200k, get a top quality player on up to $1m and there's $500k for the last two which could grow if you get creative with future deals on existing players (e.g. Nofo on $450k for 2021 could become a two year deal for $300k, that gives an extra $150k)

Also moving players on could free up more

TPJ is more ill disciplined than BJ and probably hasn’t played a good game in a year, I’d pass

To be fair not many have played well under Seibold. TPJ is a talent and would improve our pack out of sight.

His offloads would help us a lot. We only seem to start doing them when we are already winning, warriors killed us with them almost like having an extra tackle or two every set

No doubt we'd be a much better team with him in it. I can't see it happening in a million years though.

Yeah, we need second rowers but I’m not sure if he is one. Can’t see us spending big on another middle forward

If there is one thing we are lacking in our team it's aggression
I believe Madge would like what Tevita could bring
Just think of our Pack
Packer
Blore
Mikaele
Aloiai
LJ
Twal
McIntyre
Eisenhuth
Musgrove
Stefano
And add TPJ
That's looking pretty solid

There’s fullbacks at the club mate . Also Doueihi is doing fine . Hooker is not a priority ... like at all. We have Simpkins and Liddle waiting in the wings . The last 2 I’ll give you .

With the exception of a 5/8 I wouldn’t say any of those are our main priorities

Apparently, Madge went in hard, he really wanted him but it seems he's the loyal type and told Manly he'd stay if they went close with the dollars. Definitely the type of player you want at a club. I've also been told Madge won't sign anyone over 21 and Pascoe had to really twist his arm to sign BJ, so it doesn't bode well for JAC and the likes. If Luce wasn't here BJ was no chance of a job. I guess he's from the Bellamy school of recruiting and developing rather than the Roosters school of spending millions no matter what.

I can’t understand this. Youth is fine but you need a blend.

somebody put together a really good post about Madge having a really young playing group when he won the comp at Souths in 2014, and that he stays away from older players to avoid burnout. if he gets them into the system young he can mould them to his liking, have them work hard without the risk of burning out and have them eventually grow and become more consistent. while it's a bit ridiculous that he'd sign no one over 21 it kinda makes sense.
