Sironen secures No. 6 for Tigers

Rookie Curtis Sironen has the Wests Tigers five-eighth jersey stitched up after proving a vital cog in their 40-0 NRL rout of Canberra, but his challenge is to hold the position, coach Tim Sheens says.

The 18-year-old scored the opening try and pulled his weight in the halves alongside Benji Marshall to notch another solid performance in just his second NRL game.

While he was admittedly brought into the Raiders game as last-minute cover for the injured Blake Ayshford, Sheens agreed Sironen had done enough to make the No.6 his own.

"I've been trying to hide him as long as I can," Sheens said.

"There's no doubt he's a first grader.

"But (selection) is easy to get - it's harder to hold. So the challenge for Curtis now is to work hard and continue to be five-eighth in this side which isn't easy for a young guy.

"He's going to be mentally under the pump through the rest of the season as we all are.

"If he can handle that, it'll be a real challenge for him but he's certainly showing the signs at the moment."

Sironen's rise is all the more impressive knowing he played just one Toyota Cup match this year after undergoing shoulder surgery in the pre-season.

Sironen, the son of former Balmain, NSW and Australian Test player Paul Sironen, was called on with 30 minutes to go in the victory over North Queensland but played a full 80 against the Raiders.

He was one of many Tigers to enjoy a standout performance at Canberra Stadium as David Furner's men crumbled under the pressure for their worst performance of the season.

It was only the second time in their history the Raiders have been kept scoreless at home.

Sheens stood by earlier comments backing props Aaron Woods and Keith Galloway for State of Origin squad consideration, despite it flaring existing tensions between him and NSW coach Ricky Stuart.

Stuart was in the stands on Saturday to watch the Tigers-Raiders clash, but Sheens insisted he wasn't telling Stuart what to do.

"I just suggested last week there were three really good NSW props on show and I had two of them.

"I'd still stand by that.

"We've been up, we've been down, we've been criticised for being too soft in the forwards earlier in the year by a couple of so-called experts but, at the end of the day, we've muscled up and it's been on the back of the two big fellas."

The Tigers won their sixth straight with the victory over the Raiders, and will head to Melbourne full of confidence to meet the Storm at AAMI Park on Friday.

Very exciting times for the Tigers. For Curtis to be able to come into first grade at such a young age and handle himself so well is a very positive sign for the future. The last time we had such a great five-eighth come through the ranks was Benji. Now that Benji has matured a lot and is being forced to play a much controlled game, we finally have the halves combo that can win the comp. The last time we had that was in '05… and we all know what happened that year!

"But (selection) is easy to get - it's harder to hold"
Hahahahahahaha. Sheens motto is the reverse of this theory. I have a feeling we may lose a certain reserve grade winger based on this theory.

Who are we talking about Chunky?

Koribete I would suggest.

Why Koroibete….... I have no idea what The Love Machine is talking about but I'd have to assume he's referring to John Grant If he's talking about reserve grade.

Still can't see the connection.

Curtis has definately impressed in his limited time. I hope it continues.

Koroibete honestly didn't impress me much yesterday

He wasn't suppose to in inclement weather a game plan was to get the 2 points and nothing else… were you there for the entire Warriors game as if you had you would of seen a real performer!

Sheens needed to come up with a decent spine for the Tigers given Tedesco is gone for the season and Moltzen at 7 didn't work. The 1,6,7 and 9 combo we have now is what we should stick with for the remainder of the season. Young Sirro is bound to make mistakes, every playmaker does, but he also has the vision and ability to create something out of nothing and it's that ability which can win you a game.

hope sirro doesn't leave i would love to see him at 5/8 for the next 12 years or so

Lol your impressed easily. How bout you give him a bit longer then 2 games before you declare him you want him in the side for the next 12 yrs yeah.? Case in point, Daniel Mortimer

We extended Sirro till the end of 2014 earlier this year, with an option for 2015 in our favour.

:stuck_out_tongue:

good to hear..pity it seems we may not be able to hold on to Miller too, i guess that's part of having so many good juniors coming through, you can't keep 'em all.

Got Tons of wingers.

Well Done Sirro Jr, We have been waiting for you to arrive for a while now.

I forgot this kid was only 18.. and 104 kilos!! How many weet-bix does he do? He's gotta be the biggest 5/8 in the comp for quite some time, unless I'm mistaken?

I see you don't watch alot of under 18's footy, in Union or League 18 year olds being over 100 kgs is not uncommon
