Sirro...another Benji??

Not sure he's another Benji as far as shoulders go, but it's a terrible blow for the young fella, and one that will have him behind the 8 ball as far as pre-season goes as he will be doing rehab on his shoulder. Best guess is we'll see him in April/May next year.

Sheens can't be blamed for the injury after the fact. Obviously Sironen's body isn't as strong as a player with a few more years under the belt - but we really were in a situation that required a risk to be taken with a young player. It was an unlucky dislocation that could happen to many players in the NRL.

This seems more like a personal agenda against Sheens than anything else.

Its probably pretty obvious to most here, Im not Sheens biggest fan.
I was merely reminded of Marshalls eartly injuries when Sirro unfortunately went down last night.
You could say a lot of replies on here are personal agendas as well
 
I don't know much about personal agendas on this forum, I don't think about it that hard. I have read on this forum however as to why Sheens doesn't try someone from the lower grades or why won't he blood some junior players, well it appears to me he has on this occasion he did this a while ago with Sirronen and it started to pay dividends. How can we possibly blame the coach for what some may perceive as a 'premature' injury to a young player ? I applaud Sheens for once taking a rare gamble on a young player and in fact then sticking with him. Many on here have been asking this of the coach for some time, well at last he did it with a fine young player and now he is injured, we want to blame him.
 
Ink : what about Aaron Woods , no complaints when he was playing as a 19 year old last year and this year , has been going great guns .
Tim Brasher played in as 17 year old ,didn't get his 1st injury till he was 26 years old , Brad Fittler the same . If your good enough your old enough . Sirro was just unlucky , he got stepped and stuck his arm out , just one of those things.
 
According to one of Warren Ryan's theories, teams that are consistent in their performance game after game, are the ones that have the minimum injuries, especially to their 'marque' players.
Anecdotaly the current history tells us that even 'prototype of consistency' team cannot suddenly win without only one of their 'marque' players (see their games against Canberra and Parra for instance).
Remember also that our 2005 season was (unfortunately) the only one when we had minimum injuries to our main players.
Possibly, the same can be said for the Dogs without Barba and Kasiano, Cowgirls without Thurston and Bowen,
Mainly without B Stuart and Lyons, Titans without Prince etc.
Does this put in perspective that we missed our (only?) fullback (Tedesco), our main forwards (Ellis, Gallaway) and one of our best players (Farah) ?
It would be interesting to rank teams success relative to number of injuries and how many games their best players played.
Note that this is not an attempt to provide an excuse for this/previous seasons. Just want to see some real numbers, that may disapprove/support Ryan's theory.

It is a fine line with young players and in general I dont always agree if you are good enough you are old enough theory, I think plenty of players are talented enough but not necessarily ready for the highest level as their body is not physically ready.
In Sirro's case I would have thought he was ready, I think particuarly with hindsight that Benji should have been bought on slower, however he did win a comp as 20year old, would he have done that if he did not play in 03 and 04, guess we will never know.
But it is a question worth asking.

IMO I dont think Miller is physically ready for week in week out NRL (gut feel really, not evidence to back me up) people have called for his inclusion , yet others are saying bringing in Sirro is a rash decision, by a desperate man.
 
You can try and prevent injuries or at least minimize the risk of them, but you can't blame the coach for all these guys injuries. You've gone mad if you think it's his fault.

It concerns me that at 19 he has knees and shoulder issues

As Watto said he has the talent for a long career , but whether it holds out long enough may be another issue

Ive no probs with his abiltity….

If he had a bit more development under his belt, he may have been able to do the same action with a different result.

Lets not forget hes gone from SG Ball to NRL basically in the space of a year, the game is so much harder faster tougher these days.....before youd go from ball -> Jersey flegg (20s) Reserves -> Firsts....usually over a year or so in each

But foreveratiger does have valid points too. Because life is so short it's better that Sironen did play. I believe he is a star in the making. I don't think we can win the comp without him, & like I said the similarities with Benji are uncanny & look @ Benji today.

Promoting discussion, and comparing two superstars as they develop, using hindsight with one (benji) and foresight with another (sironen)

Look, I do also subscribe to the idea of "good enough is old enough" and can cite examples in the modern game of players who are similarly built who have flourished - DCE is a prime example, as is (well, was) Lachlan Coote, and up until his recent injury, Jack Reed was going great guns.

The reality is injuries occur irrespective of the time in their career - I don't think the coaching staff have done anything wrong, and would have ticked the same boxes if a 30yr old vetran like Ellis returned from injury.

All I ask is that players don't come back too early.
 
Yeh well said UD…..I too often say injuries are an occupational hazard of the game

Hopefully Curtis has had more than his share for some time...anyone see the photo in todays DT?
Taller now than dad.....and has a few more years filling out to do, if hes half as good as the old boy well, I just hope hes on the park more often than not
 
when i was playing s.g ball our fullback had already 2 knee reco' s ,and we lost our lock for the season with a shoulder dislocation , so i mean injuries happen in any grade of football , respective of the age .
But i see the point Innsaneink is making in terms of development , imagine an 18 year old Benji back in his day having to tackle Dave Taylor front on . At that age there is still alot of growing to be done .
It really comes down to your coach weather he thinks you have the ability to handle yourself in the big time . It's a hard question to answer . But Sirro is the real deal watched enough to suggest that his got a long NRL career in front of him.
 
But Benji is smarter than David Taylor. Benji learnt his lesson against that cowboys prop back in the day. His name eludes me. Benji has learnt. Notice, no more shoulder injuries. Knock on wood.
