Skandalis retires … for good, this time

Adrian Proszenko | November 22, 2009

John Skandalis has played his last game in the NRL.

After agonising over his playing future, the popular Wests Tigers prop has decided to retire.

But Skandalis won't be lost to the joint venture club after signing up as the strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers' NYC team.

''It was a very hard decision, I'm still not quite over it,'' he said.

''I'm coping, I just don't want the season to come around too quickly. The hardest thing will be watching them play and it will hit me when I can't run out there any more.

''I know I could have gone around one more time but I have no regrets. I'm probably the luckiest man on earth, I had the option to play or be a strength and conditioning coach at the club that I love. There's no regret at all that I'm not playing.''

It's the second time the 33-year-old has retired from rugby league.

I thought West Magpies may have got one more season out of him.But sadly for us no.Good luck John,I'm sure as strength and conditioning coach with the same attitude as you had when playing it will go well…....

Well said Poppa…....... Wests loss is Wests Tigers gain the path to First Grade seems to have shifted from State Cup to Under 20's..Hopefully he'll drop in to Wests from time to time.....

Best of luck to Skando in his new Role....

What a champion.

This is attitude tha $$$ can't buy!

Exactly…......in a time when the game can seem all about the dollar, how refreshing for us to have blokes like this.

Awesome to hear he is gonna be imparting his knowledge, energy, nouse and loyalty onto our cubs.

Great all round.

So do these imbecile journo's ever listen to the people they interview? SKANDALIS NEVER RETIRED!! I don't know how many times it has to be said, but going from NRL-ESL-NSW CUP & back into 1st grade isn't retirement.

John you have, and always will be one of the Wests Tigers favourite sons. Thanks for all you have given to the club in the past and for what you will be contributing in the future. You will always be part of the Wests Tigers family :master:

hopefully if we have a bit of luck with injuries there won't be a need to call on the big fella again and the club can give him a proper send off with a lap or two around campbelltown stadium during half time. it'd only be fitting for a great club man who has done so much for the club and for the campbelltown area.

Exactly! He always said that he wanted to come back to Wests after his UK stint.

Excactly.

Well and truly proved a point to himself and to me that he could still cut it at the top level.
I am glad he will still be around the club in whatever capacity, as long as he's around. Will be great mentor for the young blokes.
Thanks for all your hard work Skando.

They should name one of the stands at Campbelltown Stadium the 'John Skandalis Stand'.

skando will be a great mentor for the younger blokes. was very evident in the game against easts, which we won 17-10, of his efforts. as soon as he came on the team made good yards forward.
thanks for your efforts John.

You know, I would have still loved to see Skando run on this year. Did a lot of great work last year and was one of our better props - who wouldn't prefer to see Skando on the bench rather than Gibbs!?

But great work skando, a true Tiger. Absolute champion. It's very sad to see him reitre for good.
