Wests Tigers boss Stephen Humphreys has denied a report that 2005 NRL premiership hero John Skandalis was attacked in a Sydney park.
>
Skandalis suffered a head wound on Saturday night which needed stitching and later became infected, requiring a second trip to hospital on Wednesday.
>
Humphreys told AAP the newly-retired prop, who remains employed at the Tigers as their under-20s strength and conditioning coach, had a fall on a night out with friends.
>
News Limited quoted an unnamed source saying Skandalis was ambushed by three men and knocked unconscious after leaving the Golden Sheaf Hotel in Double Bay where he'd been socialising with Tigers players.
>
However, the club rejected that.
>
"He certainly didn't get attacked," Humphreys said on Thursday. "He was just there with a mate and he slipped and had a fall and they went off to hospital to get him stitched up because he split himself.
>
"He went home from there and it was only the next day when his face started to swell up because of some sort of fine object that got into the wound and caused an infection."
>
Humphreys said he was unaware of the exact location of the incident - reportedly a Double Bay park - and didn't know if Skandalis had been drinking alcohol.
>
"There was no one else involved, it was a private thing, he was with a couple of mates and had a fall, that's it," he said.
>
The club was satisfied there was no misconduct on Skandalis' part.
>
Humphreys said the 33-year-old, who famously led the Tigers' pack in their fairytale charge to the 2005 NRL title and returned from retirement to play this year, was recovering well.
>
"John's doing fine," he said.
>
"They had to re-open up his wound and clean it up and he spent a night in hospital and he's going home today."

Telacrap wouldn't be doing the job if they didn't listen to every douchebag who rang up with alledged info on anything…....

Great to hear Skando is recovering well..........

Oh ok, thank you Smeghead. There was no article on the internet when I looked it up. A friend on facebook filled me in on what she was told at the scene.

NRL good guy John Skandalis wants to set the record straight - he wasn't punched in the face in a vicious alcohol-fuelled assault.
>
Anybody who knows Skandalis knows he has never been a big-drinking big-noter. So reports he had been assaulted in a park near the Golden Sheaf in Double Bay last Monday night were met with concern. But the Tigers' 2005 premiership prop has cleared the air .
>
"I took myself to the Prince of Wales Hospital and I did need some stitches. But there was no one else involved, I fell and did it to myself," Skandalis said. "It's been made out like it was something vicious, but it was purely just an accident."
>
The Wests Tigers' new under-20s strength and conditioning coach also laughed off suggestions that he was saved by his "mixed martial artist brother-in-law".
>
"He's been walking around Campbelltown with his chest out and his chin up because he's a martial arts expert," Skandalis said. "The truth is he wasn't even there that night, he actually just picked me up from the hospital. And he does a bit of martial arts, but I'm not sure he's an expert."
>
Skandalis had been having a beer with former team-mates Todd Payten and Daniel Fitzhenry. Fitzhenry was with him when he fell about 10pm, but Payten had already left.
>
Skandalis took his daughters to a Wiggles concert the following day and afterwards the cut in his head became infected. That is when he had to report to the Campbelltown Hospital, where he was placed on a drip. Skandalis remained in hospital overnight before being released last Thursday afternoon.
>
"I do want to clear it up because I don't want it to look like something bad has happened to another footballer on the drink," Skandalis said. "I was mucking around with Daniel Fitzhenry when I fell and split my head. I went to the Wiggles the day after and that night it got infected.
>
"Because I'm training the young under-20s boys, I don't want to be setting the kind of example of a bloke who gets on the drink and gets into fights. That's not me and it's never been me."

End of story methinks.
