Sleeping tablets in NRL a worry for Farah

Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah says he's concerned about NRL players regularly taking both caffeine and sleeping tablets.

Speaking at an anti-doping round table alongside disgraced Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson in Sydney on Thursday, Farah said he was among many athletes who used caffeine tablets before a game.

"I think caffeine's widely accepted," he said.

"(But) I worry about players I do know of that do take downers, or sleeping tablets after games.
"I notice when I take caffeine tablets before a game, I'm awake in bed at four in the morning staring at the ceiling. You just can't get to bed.

"There have been times where I've had to take something when I go to bed. I don't do it regularly but I do know of players that are doing it week-in, week-out. It does become a concern.

"… I don't want it to become a widespread issue."

Farah said it was purely his decision to take the caffeine tablets, which are offered to players by doctors and trainers and are a legal substance.

"It's our choice, it's not forced upon us.

"There'll be games I don't take it. But some games I'll feel the need or I feel like I want to take it to get my energy levels up a bit."

Farah also opened up about "absolute shock" he felt when learning of the doping allegations that sparked ASADA's investigations into the NRL and AFL, saying before this season he didn't even know what a peptide was.

"I've been around for 11 seasons now, and I can honestly say ... I'd never seen or heard anything or suspected a player or anyone I knew of being involved in doping," Farah told AAP.

"I was probably naive to the fact that there were players out there taking illicit drugs.

"I don't think it's as widespread as everyone thinks - I'm hoping it's not anyway. From my experience, I know that 99 per cent of the people are doing the right thing."

Farah said players, including himself, placed enormous trust in club support staff in charge of their supplements program.
"As soon as we've finished our weights session we come out the kitchen and I've got a shake - every player's got a shake - with their name on it with supplements in it.

"I've got no idea what's in it, but we're told to take it.

"I'd never think twice to ask what's in it, because you just don't expect for anything to be in there that's illegal.
"I'm a bit older now so anything I put in my body, if I've got question marks over it, I will ring the WADA hotline and double check it.

"If I was told you've got to take a needle offsite, I'd start waving the red flag."

He's being abit hypocritical........

**I don't know what to make of this first he says.**

He keeps contradicting himself....

Not too sure what to make of this…not good I think.

You often see players dropping a tab of some sort in the cameras in the sheds just before kick off

He's sounding a bit hypocritical here

Caffeine tablets are not that bad. It's no worse then having a couple cups of coffee

But I can see where your coming from. Popping anything is seen as drugs. Be it caffeine or tic tacs

I know a lot of sports pop sudofede (sp)

Many players drinks cans of Red Bull before a game as well. No different to caffeine tablets except one is in liquid form and the other is a pill.

When i have a Mother or a Red Bull i feel hyped up and energetic for the rest of the day. that's what they are for and plus they taste good. I always use them before a bike ride or a sporting event.

I don't see why players have to take extra caffeine or red bull just before a game. It might make them hyped and energetic but they are used to unnaturally enhance their performance instead of relying on their own natural ability. when players find that these enhancers lose their kick one drug often leads to another.

Its just a placebo effect for people. I can have a coffee and fall asleep minutes later. The "buz" people get is all in their head. And no, im not just saying that because it doesnt affect me, the power of the mind is the stongest drug anyone has and our minds are made to believe coffee will keep us awake to all hours of the morning. If u believe that than thats what happens…its your mind, not the coffee

Caffeine doping before a game has been around for a while now in the football codes. Not sure about these days but when the Wallabies were based at Coffs Harbour it was officially sanctioned. I'm surprised the NRL hasn't set limits but i guess that will come.

It's not a placebo effect.

It's a **scientifically proven stimulant**. If it wasn't no one would drink it.

Just because you think you are magically immune to it's effect, dont try and speak for the rest of the population.

Hate to break it to you KS but caffeine is a scientifically proven stimulant. It it technically a psychoactive drug, but it isn't regulated and thus widely available.

You may have a particularly high tolerance to, or lack of impact from caffeine. Same as certain populations are poor metabolisers of alcohol and can't have many drinks. That does not mean that it is all in people's mind.

When you talk about "power of the mind" - certainly therapeutic outcomes can be impacted by beliefs and the placebo effect, but trust me drugs are real and they have very real chemical interactions with your body. If it's "all in the mind", then you could take heroin and have no reaction to it.

Try a few of these out for an all-round approach to research on caffeine, particularly in an exercise setting:

In greyhound racing trainers who have been found to have given their greyhound a level of caffeine are suspended and disqualified from accepting any prize money the greyhound may have earned whilst racing under the effects of caffeine.

Nothing new with Caffeine tablets, been big in sport for years,a mate of mine who played rugby with one of Australia best no7 in the past 50 years told me he used to take 10 caff tablets before a game and another 10 at half time. Another guy told me they are massive in cricket, mainly with batsmen.Their is a very well known English top order batsmen who appears at the crease like a startled rabbit and is always hypo at the start of his innings, I was told it because he eats caff tablets and drinks red bull before every dig and his ticker is pumping off the clock

Im not denying its a stimulant people. Im saying that when people have a coffee and stay up all night as a result, it isnt the coffee doing it, its their belief the coffee is doing it. Yes its a stimulant, but your dreaming if u think it will keep u awake all night. Cocaine last what, 1 or 2 hours?….you telling me coffee is stronger? Maybe more slow releasing, but no way enough to keep people up. Placebo affect

according to the article he takes them "to get his energy level up"

Disappointing. As if there were not enough factors at hand to encourage motivation and "energy levels"

It seems obvious to me that there is a price to pay for stimulant usage, there is always a downside.

To me, it shows a lack of self confidence and a belief that a "legal drug " will enhance performance.
Not a quality a strong or responsible captain should exhibit I reckon….....but sure, no-one's perfect

Some days the energy levels can be low no matter how motivated you are… I get the caffeine use. I don't think it reduces my respect for Robbie.
On a side note watching the Rabbitohs. Many of whom must be building muscle somehow??
