Slow-moving search worries Elias

Wests Tigers are edging towards the appointment of their coach - but it is the fact they are edging at all that is concerning some.

Ben Elias, a club great and former board member, admitted he was becoming frustrated by the delays in appointing a replacement for Tim Sheens.

The club is believed to have narrowed its search down to two candidates - Melbourne assistant Kevin Walters and former Bradford and St Helens coach Mick Potter - but with no official announcement coming, some are getting restless.

Elias believes the delays in appointing a new coach have left the Tigers about six weeks behind other clubs. ''I think for our supporters, our sponsors and also importantly our players, we have to get someone in sooner rather than later,'' Elias said. ''We need leadership, and that comes from the coach. We're about six weeks behind everyone else … The coach has to implement procedures, bring in his culture as well as his support staff. That doesn't happen overnight.''

It has been speculated the Tigers will make a decision this week. Radio host Alan Jones, a supporter of one of the candidates, Matt Parish, also criticised the process yesterday.

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys has interviewed candidates, while a subcommittee will discuss the appointment before it is put to the full board.

''We understand the interest in the subject and obviously have no desire to drag out an outcome,'' he said. ''That would be counter-productive for all concerned, especially the candidates who have invested a lot of their time in the process. That said, the board will take as long as is necessary to get this critical decision right in the best interests of the club.''

I would rather they take some time and get it right than rush in and select the wrong candidate.

It seems the process has already weeded out a couple that perhaps we may have regretted had they been chosen.

Someone tell Elias to butt out…..he should focus on restoring the Balmain Leagues club he so conveniently tore apart to his own benefit!

Can't help but wonder whether it's taking so long because they are unsure whether they will be paying out 900k or an agreed lower amount.

if they can't afford 900 i doubt they could afford 600, my guess is he will want the lot

keep your thoughts to yourself benny i think you have caused enough problems move to western australia and let us get on with repairing the damage you and others have done i just hope it is not too late as the magpies could go it alone the have the funds balmain are destitute.

WHile I agree with what he is saying, I always do wonder why Benny is giving comments or sought out to give comments.

I must admit anything Ben Elias and Alan Jones disagree with is pretty much alright in my book.

I agree 100%. Elias has already badly damaged WT with his Rozelle Club incompetence. Also what has Alan Jones got to do with WT? He always seems to offering opinions and advice on them. Has he ever attended any of their matches over the past 5 years?

I am starting to believe that the delay in naming the new coach has a lot to do with Support Staff - who is to go and and who to recruit.

What a great idea, then you could role out that amazingly successful model of a football club that just nudged Norths for total premierships.

some potential candidates are uncertain about the stability of the club, don't know if this applies to all of them though.

Benny was a great player. If he lives like he played then more or less I like to think that I have some respect for the guy. He always gave it his all.

Benny wasn't just a great player, he was the best hooker the game has produced, instrumental in effecting the much needed cultural change that saw Sheens come to the Club and has served with distinction beyond his playing career in ensuring the viability and progress of the club. I'm surprised that the Mods allow so much of the uninformed, calculated and personal stuff to get through the filters.

I don't think it's taken too long (yet) - it's been what, three weeks? Not like the Warriors who sacked McLennan 2 months ago. Better a slow start to pre-season preparations than a bad, rushed decision.

The real delay was in sacking Sheens after the end of season, and there's not much that can be done about that now.

They are probably waiting to finalize the Sheens issue - who knows the preferred candidate may not commit until Sheens position is resolved.
