SMH investigation Part 2

I'm glad the club appointed staff and didn't ask for Madge's approval - he's just the coach, he doesn't control the football department. He's clearly struggling so the club has to try fix it

Yeah what is it about us that draws these articles?

The Broncos got the spoon last year, finished bottom 4 this year and I swear we've still had more articles.

Every club has lean years. The Broncos haven’t been nearly as bad as us consistently though. They also just signed one of the games premier halfbacks, whereas we are still twiddling our thumbs. It’s good this is being highlighted. The club deserves to be embarrassed.

No other club has failed for the last decade like we have bar like the warriors but no one cares about them lol. We get picked on because there's constantly things going wrong

Warriors made the finals in 2017. One more time than we have in the last decade.

I hope this talk of building bigger pathways in the MacArthur region and having more presence in the area actually happens this time

Theyre almost as bad as us, Only one finals game (and they lost) in a decade, being from NZ the Aussie media barely talks about them though.

Part Two of the ‘investigation’ read like a hit job on Madge.
Other than that there was nothing newly presented in this Pulitzer contender.

The reason these stories keep getting written about us is because we are a basket case. Longest streak of not playing finals. Can never win a game when the pressure is on. What do we expect???

None of this is really new. A lot of it is stuff that has been printed before and is now just in one story so it’s a stretch to call it an investigation more like a Year 7 school report. The 2 players mentioned not in speaking terms aren’t at the club next year so there is no need for them to talk. **The article also ignores that Balmain junior league is the fastest growing in the state and is run by Wests Ashfield.**

Interesting....can you provide more details?

@cochise Its never been mentioned before that Madge had final editing rights on the documentary???????

The Balmain and St George junior leagues have had the greatest increase in players over the passers two seasons and that is expected to continue. The Balmain league is also supporting the Eastern Suburbs junior league as they don’t have enough teams to run independently anymore.

Since Wests Ashfield took over Balmain Leagues they have been funding the league and supporting the junior clubs. Ashfield is a powerful club with a lot of money to put into grass roots as well.

I think I have read all of that before just not all together. So the club is in good shape, just not demonstrating that with the FG side - hardly a basket case but still not getting the desired results.
Maguire will either get sacked - the most likely decision based on what happens to coaches usually when FG squads fail - or they will hold firm and back what he is trying to do.
What ever the outcome it can't go unnoticed the level of interest in a club running 13th with no genuine stars with a final series about to kick off.

There may or may not be some truths in what is written but what is it with the media's fixation on slamming our club? Why does it have to be an investigation? Did we commit a major crime?
There are many other clubs not performing but they rarely get the constant blowtorch like we do.

I think we are a focus for media stories because we have this gulf between on field performance, which has been woeful, and off field performance, the club is doing well and we have a strong supporter base and that sells the media stories. We are our own worst enemy in that regard.

That's another reason why WTs is so important to the NRL. The inner west is a gold mine of potential and talent. It's great we have the COE coming online and young players of the calibre of Daniel Sykes, Liam Scolari, Brandon Tumeth, Jordan Hill and Ben Stevanovic who have come through junior ranks.

The article says we've got 4 spots open in our top 30 for next year. If you look at the Tigers website it only lists 24 players contracted for 2022, leaving us with 6 spots open for next year

Reece Hoffman and William Kei are not included in that list, maybe they're getting promoted?

ONe thing I think the article highlights is Maguire's man management is not good. The example of MCK illustrates it- not picked, told to look elsewhere, circumstances force Maguire to play him late in season, Maguire likes what he sees and changes his mind- but MCK already in discussions with Souths and we will probably loose him. Does this scenario of bad timing and mixed messages not sound familiar to most here when we discuss why we havent been able to recruit / retain x, y, z player? Also the mention of his paranoia resulting from the Souths sacking, it must affect his desire to have strong and successful people around his assisting- noting his disquiet over Sheens being signed up. If he doesnt like it, he can resign, not hold out like so may of the players WT have had recently.

Have to say, although I was leaning more to sacking Maguire than retaining him, after reading the article IM now more in favour of sacking after this weekend. He has done the hard yards certainly, but for WT to progress to the next stage we need a more flexible coach to take advantage of things.

I'm on the fence regards Maguire.
I am concerned about his relationship with players and my impression that he has a stereotype in mind for the different positions. The article mentions his flip-flopping over the performance/retention of Seyfarth and Chee-Kam.
He talks about having players that are committed and resilient and yet dropped Thompson and Momirovski. I regarded those as poor choices at the time (the growth stage of the team) they were made.
Any wonder that players feel they are 'walking on eggshells'?
It also mentions his distancing himself from performances by referring to the team as 'they' rather than 'we'.
I'm not happy with how I perceive Maguires relationship with the squad to be.

Interesting read. Everything seems to be set up financially with profit and COE.

Success in the lower grades.

Recruitment and poor NRL level performances still our achilles heal.

High level decisions made now and moving forward are potentially going to make or break this club.

I think to be fair to Madge, his coaching of this team,is really trying to get the youth used to the NRL system and tough grind it presents week to week...he either will succeed or fail and be moved on....However,the really important aspects to take out of this presentation is the many, many mistakes and poor decisions made by the club over the years, that has left the club being shown in a very dim light by many ....If the board, admin, coach, staff and players get this right and be on the same page next year and work as a solid business moving forward, the future should be much brighter and happier with absolutely no divisiveness...

Madge knows the mentality required to win a premiership. In the current comp I only see it in the Roosters players, Storm players and the Panthers players.
It could be a lesson given too premature for our squad but in the future it may come back to them at the heat of the battle.

Yep, I believe the mental side of the squad is a problem, those few winnable games we lost, have obviously cost us dearly. We wouldn't be talking about this had we won just 2 of them?

That's a good summary. There is much to be pleased about. With Maguire apparently having difficulty with Sheens' employment, with Brooks and also the same issue which resulted in his demise at Souths re-occurring at WTs, a decision needs to be made after the last game.

I can see you salivating with this kind of news :smirk:

I think that puts a whole new perspective on things. I was on-side with Madge on the basis of the documentary (which seemed to be at odds with the stories that were coming out regarding his management). The issues seemed to be player issues with the coach doing his best. Maybe that's not the case, it would certainly explain a lot!
