The Gunners go down 3-0 to a determined Brighton side.

Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season as they were stunned by Brighton, who put three past the champions at Amex Stadium.

On the back of fine wins over Coventry City and Manchester United, the Seagulls started the match in confident style.

The Gunners struggled to deal with the intensity shown by the hosts and Pascal Gross gave Brighton a 31st-minute lead with a shot from the edge of the box that went in off the post.

Arsenal, who had won their past nine league games and seven in all competitions at the start of this campaign, were not allowed to settle and looked uncharacteristically nervy on the ball.

They forced their best chance to equalise on a counter-attack just before half-time, but Bukayo Saka did not take the opportunity after the ball fell to him in the area following Martin Odegaard's deflected effort.

Just seconds after that missed opportunity, Brighton claimed their second goal as Charalampos Kostoulas was given too much space on the edge of the box to turn and fire past David Raya.

Mikel Arteta opted not to make any changes at half-time as he looked for a response from his side, but it didn't come as Chema Andres headed in Brighton's third 12 minutes into the second half from a Gross corner.

It was an 11th goal in the past week after five at Coventry and a 3-2 comeback success at Old Trafford to stun United in the Carabao Cup.

Defender Pascal Struijk, making his first Premier League start for Brighton since a summer arrival from Leeds, almost added a fourth from another corner, but headed wide under pressure.

Kai Havertz had a late opportunity to pull one back for Arsenal but shot straight at home keeper Bart Verbruggen when through on goal, while Matt O'Riley was denied at the other end by Raya.

The defeat left the defending champions second in the table on goal difference having played one game more than Manchester City, who host Sunderland on Sunday, while Brighton moved up to third and two points behind the leaders.

The Toffees defeat a 10 man Ipswich Town side 1 nil.

Unbeaten Everton moved up to fifth in the Premier League as Thierno Barry's goal made the difference against 10-man Ipswich Town.

Barry scored his fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute when he did well to adjust his body to divert James Tarkowski's 35-yard strike into the net.

The French forward could have doubled the hosts' lead later with a diving header, but he failed to hit the target.

Barry did have the ball in the net again, with a header from a corner, but it was disallowed as Brennan Johnson, who had been standing in front of goalkeeper Christian Walton, was ruled offside.

Promoted Ipswich, who came looking for their third league win of the campaign, had chances to equalise, but Everton's Jordan Pickford did well to save from Emersonn, Abdul Fatawu, Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara.

Emersonn and Leif Davis also missed the target when well placed.

Hopes of an Ipswich fightback faded when Fatawu was sent off for two bookable offences, the second of which was for diving after he went to ground under minimal contact from a James Garner challenge.

Everton are now on nine points, with two wins and three draws from their five league matches, and have also reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup, in which they will host Newcastle next month.

Newcastle get the choccies in defeating Hull City 2-1.


Newcastle United held off a late fightback from Hull City to end the newly promoted side's unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Head coach Matthias Jaissle said the injury-hit hosts were "fully committed to showing a clear reaction in front of our fans" following a chastening 4-1 defeat against Leeds United on Monday night.

Newcastle certainly looked eager to make amends as they raced into a 2-0 lead at St James' Park, but it was far from a straightforward afternoon in the end after Hull City substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back.

The recalled Joe Willock opened the scoring for Newcastle after just three minutes when Harvey Barnes poked the ball through to the midfielder and he lashed it into the net from inside the box.

Newcastle doubled their advantage in familiar circumstances when they again aggressively won the ball high up the field and Barnes danced past a couple of blue shirts before slipping in Lewis Hall, who unleashed an angled drive into the bottom corner.

The hosts had a chance to further extend their lead after Sorba Thomas tripped Jacob Murphy inside the area, but Hull City goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis guessed correctly to keep out Yoane Wissa's penalty just before half-time.

Spirited Hull pushed for a way back into the game after the break and the composed Cho set up nervy finish with his first goal since his summer move from Nice.

Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek went on to make a flying save to keep out Mohamed Belloumi's stinging effort from distance before Hull City substitute Tim Iroegbunam sent a half-volley over the bar from close range late on.

Newcastle managed to hold out to move up to eighth place in the table, while Hull slipped to seventh following their first league defeat of the campaign.

Coventry break their duck and defeat Nottingham Forest 1 nil.

Coventry City earned their first Premier League points of the season with a hard-fought victory over Nottingham Forest thanks to Jay Dasilva's second-half strike.

The newly promoted Sky Blues had lost all four of their previous fixtures - conceding 10 goals and scoring none - having returned to the top flight for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

But Frank Lampard's side weathered a first half dominated by Forest, albeit one bereft of clear goalscoring chances, before they seized their moment 10 minutes after the break.

A deft touch from Dasilva after he chased a long ball enabled him to skip inside Daniel Munoz before he dispatched a clinical finish beyond Matz Sels, who had attempted to narrow the angle.

Forest had earlier threatened with Dan Ndoye and Liam Delap both curling past the post, while visiting goalkeeper Carl Rushworth saved smartly from Neco Williams.

Oliver Glasner's side - winless at the City Ground this season - went close again after they fell behind and only a spectacular clearance from Bobby Thomas denied Igor Jesus' goal-bound effort.

Forest then thought they had equalised with four minutes of normal time remaining when Jesus fired home after Caleb Yirenkyi tumbled in the box.

However, the Coventry player's fall was deemed by the referee to have been caused by the Forest man after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

The result helped Coventry climb off the foot of the table - above Fulham and Tottenham - up to 18th, while Forest are in 12th spot.

The Boro finish 2 all with Birmingham City.

Adilson Malanda pounced on a fumble from Birmingham City goalkeeper James Beadle to snatch a point for Middlesbrough at St Andrew's.

The defender was quickest to react when the Blues shot stopper failed to deal with a Sebastian Berhalter free-kick two minutes from the end.

Max Arfsten had put Boro ahead before the break, making the most of some fine work from Amario Cozier-Duberry before calmly placing his finish beyond Beadle.

Canada international Liam Millar levelled with a first-time finish, while it took the chaos caused from a corner to put Blues ahead when Boro's Riley McGree came up with the final touch for an own goal.

Chris Davies' Birmingham appeared to be heading for their first home win of the season before Malanda popped up with the dramatic late equaliser.

QPR come back to draw 2 all with Preston North End.


Paul Smyth scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser as Queens Park Rangers came from behind to deny managerless Preston North End what would have been only their second win of the season.

Johnny Kenny had put the visitors 2-0 up in their first match since the sacking of boss Paul Heckingbottom last Sunday.

With less than a minute on the clock, Kenny latched on to Stan Mills' hopeful long ball and drove through the QPR defence before calming slotting past Pierce Charles.

Shortly after the Hoops were reduced to 10 men following a dangerous foul by Dennis Cirkin, Kenny struck again as the new signing spun in the box before firing home to double the Lilywhites' lead.

Kwame Poku pulled a deserved goal back for the home side midway through the second half.

Then, with the game going into injury time, Smyth managed to find space in the visitors' box to convert in the 90th minute and secure QPR a point to leave the travelling fans disconsolate.

Preston remain in 23rd, ahead of Burnley on points difference, while QPR move up to fifth.

Southampton go down 2-1 to Wrexham.

Keven Schlotterbeck's 89th-minute own goal ensured Wrexham claimed their first home win of the season with victory over Southampton.

It was a welcome boost for boss Phil Parkinson following a disappointing start to the season, which included a 6-0 humbling by West Ham in their previous game.

Kieffer Moore put the hosts ahead with a header in the first-half, his third goal of the campaign.

But Saints levelled when James Ward-Prowse - who rejoined the club in the summer three years after leaving for West Ham - responded five minutes after the break and looked to have earned his side a point.

But Schlotterbeck turned in Jacques Ekomie's cross as Wrexham clinched a much-needed second victory in nine games this term.

Defeat brought an end to Southampton's own six-game unbeaten league run while they are yet to win away from St Mary's Stadium in the Championship this term.

Southampton carried the greater threat for much of the game, with Finn Azaz forcing a fine save from Anthony Patterson in the opening half.

But they fell behind 10 minutes before half-time as, moments after Callum O'Hare was denied by Daniel Peretz, Moore rose highest to head Ben Whiteman's corner beyond the Southampton goalkeeper.

It extended the Saints' record of conceding in every league game so far this season.

Tonda Eckert's men levelled five minutes after the break as Ward-Prowse rifled beyond Patterson after Wrexham were unable to clear their lines.

Southampton grew in confidence and Ryan Manning fired a volley over the crossbar, with Josh Windass unable to concern Peretz with a late strike.

But the home side won it in dramatic fashion as Schlotterbeck intercepted Ekomie's cross into the Southampton six-yard box, only for the ball to loop into his own net.

Former Brighton striker Glenn Murray, however, says De Zerbi needs time.

"He is trying to build something, it will take time," he told BBC's Final Score. "Taking the emotion out of it, looking at the stats, they have had more shots in three of the past four games, more possession and more touches in the opposition box.

"They are positives, be patient, the metrics are there to say he will turn it around. They need to be patient with Roberto de Zerbi, with all the signings, it takes time to gel and get to know each other."

Well, I hope that Mr Murray is right and things turn, sooner than later .....

The Dockers Derby ended in a draw! Millwall took a two-goal lead, but West Ham managed to level the score.

West Ham produced a stunning comeback to snatch a point in a pulsating derby and deny the Lions a first win in the fixture in nearly 22 years.

The hosts dominated the opening half and Caleb Taylor and Camiel Neghli scored from close range after the Irons failed to deal with long throws from Lyndon Dykes to give Alex Neil's side a deserved two-goal lead, which they held until 74 minutes.

Half-time sub Mohamadou Kante then arrowed a low strike into the bottom corner to start the comeback and Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home from close range six minutes later to tee up a thrilling finale.

Kante was sent off in the dying seconds for bringing down Lions sub Kyrell Lisbie when through on goal while Dykes spurned a chance to win it for Millwall in stoppage-time.

So many missed opportunities, we should have won that 4-1. However the own goal by Schlotterbeck in the 89th was heartbreaking. I would've been happy with a draw.

Spurs come back late but still not enough in going down to Aston Villa 2-3

Tottenham's wretched start to the Premier League season continued as Aston Villa held off a late fightback from the hosts to claim their first league win of the campaign.

Spurs were booed off at the final whistle and despite lavishing over £300m on new signings in the summer are already beginning to give the impression of a club in crisis.

Goals from Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendia saw Aston Villa's campaign finally achieve lift off.

And Conor Gallagher's late tap in and Jan Paul van Hecke's header, with the final touch of the game, came too late to make a difference to the result.

Roberto de Zerbi's side could point to key moments in the game going against them, with captain Micky van de Ven off the pitch receiving treatment when Villa's record signing Manzambi prodded in the opener very much against the run of play.

VAR's intervention on the hour mark also correctly denied them an equaliser, with Andy Robertson found to be offside by the slightest of margins in the build up to Mohammed Kudus bundling the ball over the line from close range.

And that gave Villa the impetus to go on and seal their first league win of 2026-27 in style.

Jackson, who was a threat throughout, brilliantly found the left corner from the edge of the box with Spurs defender Jan Paul van Hecke backing off, and Argentine midfielder Buendia curled another superb effort into the same corner from even further out.

Those goals and an impressive first-half performance from visiting goalkeeper Zion Suzuki ensured Spurs have gone five games without a win at the start of a season.

Liverpool do enough to get the choccies, 1 nil over Bournemouth.

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola made a winning return to Bournemouth as his side signed off for the international break with a narrow victory at Vitality Stadium.

Alexander Isak's fourth Premier League goal of the season settled a poor game - and left the Cherries seeking a first top-flight win of the campaign going into October.

A determined run by Cody Gakpo ended with a ball into the box that Bournemouth failed to deal with and Sweden forward Isak tucked home from close range.

Isak was mobbed by Liverpool's travelling fans after running over to celebrate with them and was booked by referee Michael Oliver.

Iraola, who secured European qualification for Bournemouth before leaving to take charge of Liverpool in the summer, received a warm welcome from the Cherries fans on his return.

But he was on course to suffer a frustrating afternoon in Dorset until Isak pounced in the 57th minute.

Before then Bournemouth had gone closest to scoring through Evanilson's 18th-minute flick which Alisson did well to put behind for a corner.

At the other end, Florian Wirtz skied an attempt over the bar from close range that was flagged offside when replays showed he was, in fact, onside.

Meanwhile, expensive summer signing Bradley Barcola forced Djordje Petrovic to save with his legs, while Dominik Szoboszlai's 25-yard dipping free-kick dropped just wide.

Liverpool climb to sixth with nine points from five games, while Bournemouth have three points and drop to 17th.

Leeds United and Crystal Palace end up nil all in a game with lost opportunities.


Leeds United maintained their unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign thanks to a hard-earned goalless draw at home against Crystal Palace.

After a first half of few clear-cut chances, the game sprung into life just after the restart with the visitors having three opportunities in quick succession.

Yeremy Pino almost found the bottom corner with a clever free-kick, only for goalkeeper James Trafford to get down quickly to push the ball away for a corner, with Jefferson Lerma shooting over from the following set-piece.

Daichi Kamada then fired narrowly wide before Palace thought they had scored through Tyrick Mitchell. But team-mate Anan Khalaili was ruled offside before he had crossed into the middle and the goal was disallowed.

Leeds' best chance fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but he could not mark his return to the England squad with a goal as Walter Benitez did superbly to save his well-struck effort from eight yards out.

Daniel Farke's Leeds side, who came 14th last season on their return to the top flight, sit fifth so far in 2026-27, with two wins and three draws from their five league matches.

Manchester City outlast Sunderland to finish 5-3 up.

Manchester City were pushed all the way by Sunderland but came through to win an eight-goal thriller to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Enzo Fernandez put City in front after nine minutes with his first goal since his £125m move from Chelsea, whipping a free-kick in at the near post.

But Sunderland, who had started brightly, soon responded as Enzo le Fee picked out Brian Brobbey with a brilliant pass and the Netherlands striker slipped the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Sunderland remained more than a match for Enzo Maresca's side but were caught trying to play out from the back and ruthlessly punished as the ball was worked to Rayan Cherki, who finished smartly into the bottom corner.

Again the Black Cats hit back though, with Le Fee splitting the defence again, this time to Thomas Meunier, who unselfishly squared for Brobbey to finish into an empty net.

A lengthy VAR check for offside followed but the goal was given and it was no more than Sunderland deserved.

The visitors dropped off slightly as the first half progressed, allowing City sustained possession in the Sunderland half for the first time.

They retook the lead two minutes from half-time through Antoine Semenyo's sweetly-struck shot after Sunderland failed to deal with a cross from the right.

For once, Regis le Bris' team could not muster a quick reply and City should have doubled their lead in first-half injury time only for Erling Haaland to skew his shot wide with the goal gaping after good work by Iliman Ndiaye.

The second half began rather more calmly and City's fourth came from nothing, and with a little fortune, as Marc Guehi's pass - intended for Haaland - found its way to Semenyo, who drilled a left-foot shot into the far corner.

Just two minutes later, Sunderland were back in it as Granit Xhaka's clever pass found Nilson Angulo and he put the ball across goal for Brobbey to bundle it home and complete his first senior hat-trick.

City tried to take the sting out of the game, controlling possession to decent effect, but Sunderland were going nowhere and Donnarumma already gifted them the equaliser.

The Italy goalkeeper failed to claim a high ball into the box, Ruben Dias' loose touch saw the ball bounce back towards goal and the City captain had to be quick to recover and hook it off the line.

Donnarumma looked suspect again from the long throw-in that followed but City survived and finally put the game to bed nine minutes from time as Haaland slid in at the back post to convert Josko Gvardiol's cross.

As with his goal at Old Trafford last weekend, it was initially flagged offside but Gvardiol had timed his run to perfection and the decision was overturned.

It means Haaland has now scored against every Premier League side he has faced, while City - despite an uncomfortable afternoon - go into the international break top of the pile with a 100% record.

Manchester United leave it late to draw 1 all with Fulham.


Matheus Cunha's deflected strike rescued a point for Manchester United late on to deny Fulham a first Premier League win of the season.

Lisandro Martinez's bizarre own goal at Craven Cottage had looked set to condemn the visitors to a third consecutive defeat.

However, with just a minute of the 90 remaining, Cunha's shot from 20 yards took a wicked deflection off Fulham centre-back David Affengruber, wrongfooted goalkeeper Bernd Leno and found the corner of the net.

It was particularly harsh on Leno, who had made a number of big saves as United pushed for a leveller.

Michael Carrick's side at least avoid a third loss in a week, but head into the international break in 12th place, having taken just five points from their first five games, while Fulham are 19th on two points.

After an even start, United gradually looked to be taking control of an engaging first half with Bruno Fernandes inches away from an opener when his shot came back off the post from Cunha's cutback.

But that scare seemed to wake Fulham up, and for the next 10 minutes it felt like a different game with the sides taking turns to pour forward and chances at both ends, Josh King and Oscar Bobb coming close for the hosts while Cunha's long-range effort was deflected and looped over Leno before coming back off the post.

United forward Marcus Rashford volleyed a great chance over late in the half but the game stayed goalless.

After a turgid start to the second half, the game was jolted into life when United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a mess of Calvin Bassey's low shot before Martinez's poor touch sent the ball into his own net with the Belgian scrambling.

From there it was all United, with Leno at full stretch to deny Bryan Mbeumo and Cunha as Alvaro Arbeloa's side tried to cling on.

But eventually the goal, that United's response deserved, arrived to leave both teams a little disappointed to end the day with just a point.
