Conor Chaplin scored a stoppage-time winner as Portsmouth stunned Middlesbrough to boost their Championship survival hopes and deal a huge blow to the Teessiders' automatic promotion bid.

On-loan Ipswich forward Chaplin struck in the seventh minute of time added on from Adrian Segecic's corner to score from Portsmouth's only shot on target at the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough have slipped to fourth place in the table and are three points behind second-placed Ipswich, having played two games more.

The defeat further damages Middlesbrough's hopes of going up automatically - Kim Hellberg's side have now managed just three points from their past six games, their worst run of the season.

Roy Hodgson's winning start to his second Bristol City spell ended with a frustrating nil all draw at Queens Park Rangers.

The visitors dominated early on and created enough chances to win, but QPR goalkeeper Joe Walsh kept them at bay.

Meanwhile, the hosts extended their unbeaten run to five games.

But both sides will be frustrated as their already slim hopes of making the Championship play-offs look over with the gap to the top six now eight points.

It’s going from bad to worse for Spurs but I’m hoping for a few late season miracles to keep us up. I read today that we haven’t been relegated since the 77/78 season which is a bloody long time ago.
Fingers crossed moving forward.
Come on Ye Spurs.

It's such a shock champion @Halbrowne61 - yes everyone knows that 3 clubs drop each season but I can't believe that Spurs (and also the Hammers) are possibilities, even given Spurs were 17th last year.
In hindsight, Spurs had Kane and Son all those years and they were never replaced to their standards.
Lots to be dealt with internally.

The next weeks are edge-of-the-seat stuff: tough all round.

as a Gunners fan, Spurs getting relegated wouldn't be a bad thing.
Really really hope the Hammers stay in EPL

Relegation explained and how it affects club:

If Tottenham Hotspur get relegated, here’s what it would actually happen to the team:
First, nothing happens instantly to contracts. Every player remains tied to the club. Relegation doesn’t cancel deals, they are still legally Spurs players.
However, the big change comes from money and ambition.
Spurs would lose a huge amount of revenue, especially from Premier League TV rights. Because of that, the club would need to reduce spending quickly. This is where player exits begin.
Top players would almost certainly leave. Not because they are forced to, but because:
• They want to keep playing at the highest level
• Other big clubs would come in for them
• Spurs would be open to selling to balance finances
Some players may also have relegation clauses in their contracts. These clauses can:
• Allow them to leave for a lower transfer fee
• Reduce their wages automatically
So even those who stay might earn less.
The squad would then start to change a lot. Spurs would rely more on:
• Younger players
• Squad players who stay
• Loan signings
And this is where it gets even tougher, coming back up is not guaranteed.
Because many of their best players would leave, the overall quality of the squad drops. Even though Spurs are a big club, the Championship is very competitive and physical, and without top talent, promotion becomes much harder.
In short — relegation doesn’t “remove” players, but it triggers a chain reaction:
➡️
Stars leave
➡️
Wages drop
➡️
Squad gets rebuilt
➡️
Promotion becomes more difficult
That’s why relegation is such a big risk, even for top clubs.

Big troubles for any club dropped ......
