A giant light spiral in the sky has stunned onlookers in Norway, raising fears of an alien attack and forcing scientists to admit they are baffled by the phenomenon.

The unprecedented display could be seen for hundreds of kilometres in the dark morning sky, prompting thousands of Norwegians to bombard local media with reports of sightings.

Totto Eriksen was driving his daughter to school in the northern town of Tromso when he saw a light that "spun and exploded in the sky".

"It looked like a rocket that spun around and around and then went diagonally across the heavens," he was quoted by The Sun as saying.

"People just stopped and stared … it was like something out of a Hollywood movie."

Top astronomer Knut Jorgen Roed Odegaard said he had never seen anything like it before.

"My first thought was that it was a fireball meteor but it lasted too long," he said.

"I rang the air traffic control tower in Tromse (and) they said it was over in two minutes … that is far too long to be an astronomical phenomenon."

He added that the event was not related to aurora borealis — the famous northern lights — and speculated that the light could have been an out-of-control rocket fired out of neighbouring Russia.

This theory has been embraced by other experts, although Russian authorities strongly deny any involvement.

Strange light in Norwegian sky sparks mystery

Meteorologists, astronomers and Armed Forces have been unable to explain the lights Photo: REX

The Norwegian Metrological Institute has received hundreds of phonecalls from confused observers but so far has been unable to identify its origin.

Some experts have speculated that the phenomenon might have been caused by a Russian rocket launch. However, the Russian embassy insists such claims are completely unfounded.

Neither meteorologists, astronomers, or the Armed Forces have offered a solution to the matter.

The light was captured by amateur photographer Jan Petter Jorgensen while he was on his way to work at a salmon factory.

"The light appeared for 2-3 minutes. I could not believe my eyes, and got the shivers and was quite shaken by it", Mr Jorgensen said.

Morten Kristiansen, who saw the light phenomena from Sortland in northern Norway, added: " A large ring appeared, and then spread out, sending a green beam down to earth, "says

Looks like a projection to me.

Edit - Read somewhere that it was a russian missile test that went bad. Don't quite see how it could look like that but the report seemed reasonably official.

It's funny that the first place I heard about it was on this website. Naturally, I thought it was all a hoax, with someone having a bit too much creative time on their computer. I was staggered when I saw it mentioned on the news…

It wasn't a russian missle test. I know what that spiral and blue light is now. It came from Ziltoids starship.

Latest reports on the strange lights have been solved, authorities claim that lights in the northern skys were Rudolphs bright nose that for some reason went out causing Santas sleigh to become involved in an accident, at the moment Santa is undergoing blood tests as he smelt strongly of alcohol.
