It's a fair side given a couple of possibles were selected for the tournament up on the Central Coast for today. I would be surprised if we make it out of our group tbh.

Just on that - these are the squads for our group opponents (NQ are TBA).

Newcastle Knights: Jaelen Feeney, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Brock Lamb, Danny Levi, Jake Mamo, Chanel Mata'utia, Pat Mata'utia, Sione Mata'utia, William Pearsall, Tyler Randell, Robbie Rochow, Nathan Ross, Korbin Sims, Tariq Sims, Daniel Saifiti, Jacob Saifiti, Joseph Tapine, Akuila Uate.
>
Penrith Panthers: Waqa Blake, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Bryce Cartwright, Zach Dockar-Clay, Ben Garcia, Corey Harawira, Robert Jennings, Sione Katoa, Jeremy Latimore, Moses Leota, Josh Mansour, Te Maire Martin, James Segeyaro, Chris Smith, Will Smith, Elijah Taylor, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Isaah Yeo.

Not as if we're playing full strength teams, so every game will be a bit of a lottery.

Cowboys have named their squad…

North Queensland Cowboys: 1.Matthew Bowen, 2.Kyle Feldt, 3.Justin O'Neill, 4.Kane Linnett, 5.Antonio Winterstein, 6.Lachlan Coote, 7.Ray Thompson, 8.John Asiata, 9.Jake Granville, 10.James Tamou, 11.Gavin Cooper (c), 11.Ethan Lowe, 13.Jason Taumalolo, 14.Michael Morgan, 15.Rory Kostjasyn, 16.Coen Hess, 17.Matthew Wright, 18.Gideon Gela-Mosby.

I would go as far to say it is the strongest in the competition...if they don't win it I'd be surprised..

The Cowboys have put in a good squad but they have great stability through their club and their recent history in terms of premiership footy success is impressive.

The head of the NRL's Integrity Unit has issued a warning to the 288 players that are participating in this weekend's Downer NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park in the wake of recent off-field scandals.

Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports that Nick Weeks emailed a letter to chief executives of the 16 clubs yesterday to remind them that their players will be under the spotlight following last week's Mitchell Pearce scandal and the drama that occurred during last weekend's Queensland Rookies camp, which saw Cronulla's Valentine Holmes and Melbourne's Cameron Munster receive 12-month State of Origin bans.

A copy of the email was leaked to the Daily Telegraph last night, and reportedly details how every team will have a security guard accompanying them 24-7.

"After a generally positive off-season we are working through some recent incidents of player misconduct that are damaging to the game," wrote Weeks.

"At the December meeting we discussed the importance of avoiding any off-field incidents during the Auckland 9s.

"I want to enlist the support of each of you to ensure the behaviour of your players and staff is impeccable.

"We have delivered this message to NRL staff travelling to Auckland.

"Please ensure the NRL's expectations are understood by your players and staff travelling to Auckland."

Furthermore, every club will have the assistance of an off-duty New Zealand policeman on hand at evening functions and team dinners.

It is expected most clubs will place curfews on their players in a bid to ensure there are no major late night incidents.

"These liaison officers will stay with your team and provide helpful local knowledge and contacts," Weeks said.

"But ultimately the onus is on each Club to put in place sensible measures to reduce the risk of any player or official misconduct."

Weeks' warning reportedly followed discussions with Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman John Grant, who is said to be furious with the recent scandals that have enveloped the game.

Holmes was tipped to be one of the tournament's star attractions but was withdrawn from the Sharks squad as punishment for his bad behaviour while in Brisbane at the emerging Maroons Origin camp.

The 20-year-old was fined $1412 for obstructing police and causing a public nuisance at a taxi rank at 4:45am on Sunday.

Munster was handed his Origin ban solely for breaking curfew, but the 21-year-old fullback will still accompany the side to Auckland.

Very strong.
It seems only 2 or 3 teams ever take this comp properly seriously and send a squad more than 60-70% of their first 17\. They usually end up in the final.

ok so seems pretty obvious we're competing for second spot with the knights and panthers. to me the panthers have taken a very strong side too.be surprised if we get out of the group

There's 2 things which wins you matches in 9's (and 7s etc). Defence, and not making errors.

You can have teams with great players, but just 2-3 dropped balls or forced passes in your own half can give the opposition the territory they need and to score, sometimes very quickly, and this can create an insurmountable lead.

If you've only got small fast guys out there, or the team has poor communication you'll have no chance. You need to be able to hold off the opposition for a few sets on your line, the majority of the time, but sure inevitably in 9s the opposition will score given enough possession and territory.

If we can nail these 2 things we've got a shot at coming 2nd i reckon. The Cowboys have too many experienced players to make the number of mistakes we'd need to beat them. The other teams have more youth which gives us a better chance.

For reference, last year we topped a group containing the Warriors, Raiders and Titans.
Squads:
Wests Tigers
Sitaleki Akauola

Not much going on with the Titans and Raiders, but then again our squad looks very weak too. Warriors looked very strong, and we pipped them to top spot (by one point on F&A).

Simona looks real fit. 1.05 minutes into the preview of the 9's video he looks like he had Ado well covered over the first 30 metres.

Looking forward to see how they go.

Addo-Carr stoked for Nines opportunity

After a busy off-season that saw him switch clubs and move into full-time training at the same time, young gun Josh Addo-Carr says he can’t wait to finally throw on the new colours for the first time when he runs out at the Auckland Nines.

Having scored 28 tries in 44 Holden Cup games for the Sharks, Addo-Carr ended 2015 as Cronulla’s NYC Player of the Year and quickly set his sights on going one better in 2016.

So much so, that when Wests Tigers sat down with the youngster in November to talk about his signing and goals for the year ahead, Addo-Carr said firmly that his goal for the pre-season was to train as hard as he could and make the Club’s Auckland Nines squad.

And after nervously watching the last two tournaments from home, the wiry 20-year-old will finally get his chance to light up Eden Park this weekend for Wests Tigers.

“For me,” Addo-Carr reflected, “the best thing about being in the team is that I’ve been able to tick off one of the goals that I set myself moving to this Club a few months back.

“I’m really happy that I can tick this one off to start the year and focus on new goals.

“It’s a good opportunity for me to show people what I’ve got. The open space should really suit my game and I can’t wait to get out there with the boys for the first time.

“I was so happy when JT [Jason Taylor] tole me I was playing. I was stoked. I think I’ve been going pretty well at training, but I just need to keep doing those one-percenters. That’s something I’ve done much better this year than ever before in my career, just being more professional, so I’m hoping that this weekend really helps me with that too.”

While several of his teammates — and Coach Jason Taylor himself — have spoken openly about their excitement to see the electric Moore Park junior in open space, Addo-Carr says he’s looking forward to watching another fellow young gun in action.

“I’m keen to see both Justin Hunt and Manaia Cherrington this weekend,” he said.

“I played Manaia a bit in 20’s and he’s just so dangerous around the ruck, and he’s pretty quick too, so I think he’ll be pretty handy to have on our team at the Nines.

“Overall, I think it’s a really good team. I know some people aren’t saying that it’s that good, but we’ve got a lot of speed and the forwards are really fit, so I think we’ll go good.

“I’m just looking forward to chucking on the new colours for the first time, and hoping that I can do them proud in my first game for Wests Tigers.”

Wests Tigers will open up their Auckland Nines tournament when they face the Penrith Panthers on Saturday at 11:45am AEDT, before taking on the North Queensland Cowboys later that day at 3:40pm AEDT. The Club will then play their final group stage game against the Newcastle Knights on Sunday at 9:25am AEDT, with a second consecutive finals appearance dependent on the results of those group stage matches.

Ken Nagas that's a blast from the past, good on him.
Will be watching with interest.

Was last year. Wasn't half bad either tbh.

Shannon Walker for the Titans is a name I didn't expect to see back in the NRL but he actually appears to be proper back not just a ring in. Exciting talent is Shannon Walker.
