The panthers squad also has a number of top line 1st graders. Cartwrihgt, Mansour, Segeyaro, Watene-Zelezniak.

It will be interesting to see how Te Maire Martin goes for them.

Interesting they made Mat Moylan captain I think

Must give Teddy some hope you'd think

You'd think Moylan was too quiet and shy to be a captain.

I thought that about Moylan too Sabre…....he does come across as an awkward sort of bloke when he is speaking in the media or on The Footy Show.

I'm guessing Cherrington and Littlejohn will share hooker + 5/8 roles with one filling in for the other as needed.

Parahi woon't be playing due to injury and the need to condition him for 80 mins. nsw cup team have a trial on the same weekend as the 9s is on so if he's fit by then he'd be much better playing a full match for the first time in like 7-8 years!

I don't think we have enough pace in this team to win it, but i din't think last years squad was any good and yet they made it out of their group. Up against 3 teams traditionally very strong at NYC level i think we're going to struggle a bit. Newie and the Panthers have stronger squads than us, and i'm sure the Cowboys will too. How many tries did their wingers score last year??

While Addo Carr should be good for the 9's i think people need to lower their expectations of him somewhat. He has a very mediocre try scoring record at NYC level. 28 in 44 matches? Pretty poor for a fast player in the nyc. Karwhin has 22 from 16 matches, and the likes of Koro and Nofo were bother around a try a game if not more. He's significantly below all those players and while maybe he was in a weaker team averaging 12 tries a season as a speedster in a comp with no defence is really not that great.

Think we might surprise again, and make the quarters, but not much further than that.

Will be great to see most of our new recruits though, and like most, I'm excited to see the fuss about Addo-Carr

The Season is upon us guys

I look at this Weekend as something is better than nothing and watching some exciting footy being played .

I'm glad we are taking relatively an unknown Squad ( in terms of 1st Grade experience ) as it's a nothing Tournament .
I'll be watching Addo-Carr with interest and this Tournament is right up Cherrington's Alley.

Relieved that Moses, Brooks and Teddy have been kept away.

Its a tough one, if we had sent our top squad over to NZ, it would have been a great bonding exercise,it would have been good for their confidence and if they progressed through the comp to the semi finals or better, they could have puts some hard cold cash in the bank.

In saying that one major injury and it would be a disaster, but that major injury can happen at Concord on the training paddock. I guess they have done the right thing, but you would imagine the three kids could have given this tournament a shake

Not fussed

Not having a crack,

However last year you were adamant we should have played a stronger side and competed for the title

Change of heart this year?

Happens on the training paddock you dont get the flak.

Happens at the Nines supporters will be up in arms and the coach and the club will be thinking they have made a major blunder

I agree we could have gone close to winning it with it with those 3 however with Teddys injury history especially he is not worth the risk. Brooks or Moses I would have understood to an extent.

Anyway with taylor ball in operation the last thing he would want those 3 to do is show off their touch football skills.

Maybe one of the overlooked reasons for not sending anywhere near a full strength squad is Taylor Ball.

Taylor would not want them getting into touch football habits.

You look at the way they played last season and you see exactly why he kept them away from the Nines.

Im not trying to have a crack at anyone here, just thinking of a another logical reason besides injury we field a dud side over here.

Simona to lead from front at Nines

Feeling “fitter and faster than ever before”, Wests Tigers flyer Tim Simona says he’s ready to help lead a young side to success this weekend at the Auckland Nines.

One of just four players in the squad to have played more than 50 NRL games, the 24-year-old is certainly under no illusions about the task that lies ahead of Wests Tigers’ young side at Eden Park this weekend — especially in a strong pool featuring former champions North Queensland Cowboys, Penrith Panthers and the Newcastle Knights.

However, off the back of a pre-season that Simona feels was the “best in his career” so far, the Samoan international is confident the team will deliver a positive performance.

“I’m definitely excited to get back to the Nines and back to some footy,” Simona said.

“It’s been a long pre-season — as they always are — but we’ve done a lot of work and really come a long way since we started. For me personally, it’s been good to get a full pre-season under my belt and it’s made me pretty excited for the year ahead.

“I’m feeling fitter and faster this year than ever before so hopefully I can take on board what I learned last year at the Nines and apply that to my game this weekend.

“For me, because I’ve played more games than most of the guys in our squad, I feel like I can teach the up-and-coming guys about the tournament and help nurture them a bit.

“I’ve never really thought of myself as a senior player, but compared to a lot of our squad, I've played with some experienced guys myself throughout my career and some really professional players, so I feel I can pass on the things that I’ve learned.”

Simona, who was born in Auckland before moving over to Australia six years later, says he’s convinced the Club’s young side will be very competitive come kickoff.

“There’s lots of young names in our team, but it’s a really balanced team,” he enthused.

“If we can keep building on what we’re doing at training, we’re every chance at going a long way this year and keep some of the more fancied teams on their toes a bit.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing some of the new guys get their first run. Guys like Justin Hunt, Jack Littlejohn, they’ve really been training the house down all pre-season. Same with young Josh Addo-Carr — he’s absolutely lightning quick so he’ll be good to have.

“It’s always a good trip, and it’ll be good to head back home too and see my family.

“Hopefully they’ll all be out there to see a win!”

I can't imagine him being confident and forthright enough in what he wants from his team.

One of my fav WT's players, he can be anything, arguably one of the best WT centers ever.
Great acceleration/speed and footwork, very good hands, he was one of our leading try assistants, even with slow train Pat

All about risk mitigation, especially for Taylor. The results this season mean more for him than anyone else I would suspect.

Few ex-tigers playing. Moltzen for Manly and Anasta for the roosters. I wish one of them all the best.

Meh, every single player that's not injured says they've had the best pre-season ever. Every year. Means nothing. I'll wait til the 9s and trials before we can comment on his actual fitness.

Shouldn't be hard to improve as he was his slowest ever last year.

It's a fair side given a couple of possibles were selected for the tournament up on the Central Coast for today. I would be surprised if we make it out of our group tbh.

Just on that - these are the squads for our group opponents (NQ are TBA).

Newcastle Knights: Jaelen Feeney, Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Brock Lamb, Danny Levi, Jake Mamo, Chanel Mata'utia, Pat Mata'utia, Sione Mata'utia, William Pearsall, Tyler Randell, Robbie Rochow, Nathan Ross, Korbin Sims, Tariq Sims, Daniel Saifiti, Jacob Saifiti, Joseph Tapine, Akuila Uate.
>
Penrith Panthers: Waqa Blake, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Bryce Cartwright, Zach Dockar-Clay, Ben Garcia, Corey Harawira, Robert Jennings, Sione Katoa, Jeremy Latimore, Moses Leota, Josh Mansour, Te Maire Martin, James Segeyaro, Chris Smith, Will Smith, Elijah Taylor, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Isaah Yeo.

Not as if we're playing full strength teams, so every game will be a bit of a lottery.

Cowboys have named their squad…

North Queensland Cowboys: 1.Matthew Bowen, 2.Kyle Feldt, 3.Justin O'Neill, 4.Kane Linnett, 5.Antonio Winterstein, 6.Lachlan Coote, 7.Ray Thompson, 8.John Asiata, 9.Jake Granville, 10.James Tamou, 11.Gavin Cooper (c), 11.Ethan Lowe, 13.Jason Taumalolo, 14.Michael Morgan, 15.Rory Kostjasyn, 16.Coen Hess, 17.Matthew Wright, 18.Gideon Gela-Mosby.

I would go as far to say it is the strongest in the competition...if they don't win it I'd be surprised..

Only two unknowns (to me)
Ray Thompson has been called into the indigenous team so may be out of this, unsure

Pretty heavy pre season schedule for them with the England trip as well

Why in the world would we risk Tedesco or Moses in a pre season Nines carnival? We all want them playing as many games as possible come March not now. If Teddy got injured or even Mitch we would, in my mind anyway, struggle straight away at the start of the season. I think a lot of the guys going are very mobile, some need footy and others get opportunities to impress.
