Perhaps this is some sort of 'succession plan'? There has been a lot of them in the AFL recently, assistant coaches continuing to work under a head coach with the promise of the top job in a year or two. Although it would make more sense with a younger assistant coach, not an experienced coach being hired as head trainer.
