Steve Georgallis joins the Wests Tigers

Mighty Maggie fair post and i will elaborate my view more. Your right i didn't support western suburbs but i saw Georgallis play many games of football over his career, though i will admit due to a friends connection to the club at the time most were at the beginning of his career when he played for Easts and obviously his last year of grade with Wests Tigers . IMO he was nothing but a solid first grader at best who every now and then had a massive blunder in his game at a crucial stage.
As a player he never represented his country, state or city origin. Also Georgallis was captain of the worst defensive side of all time in Australian 1st grade rugby league. Now of course i don't blame him for that record but if you look at that team i wouldn't even rate him in the top half a dozen players, Andrew Leeds, Brett Hodgson, Ken + Kevin McGuinness, Harvey Howard & Ciriaco Mescia were all better players again IMO.
Our opinions obviously are different on playing ability but i certainly wont disagree with you about Georgallis giving 110% effort for the maggies.
I stand by my comment that i hope he can coach better than he played as i want a top shelf coach not a mediocre one. I will certainly not base my opinions of his coaching on what i think of him as a player as great players don't equal great coaches and vice versa. In fact most of the top coaches seemed to be average players.

GNR4LIFE - You accuse me of narrow minded and ignorant statements because my views don't match yours? Fair enough your decision. Read above in my reply to Might Maggie for my views.
Interestingly you compare the effort Georgallis put in as a player with what Beau Ryan puts in currently. Well if Beau Ryan retired today and became coach for next year would you want him to be a better coach than player? I certainly would. Same as what i stated with Georgallis.

Balmain Bug - Yep mate im 10, just typing this up on my little lunch break. So you compare Georgallis with Brad Fittler, well i just don't know how to reply to that one!
I find it slighty surprising your not bagging Humphreys in this thread, surely the signing of an ex player to now become assistant coach shows he is favoring that side of the joint venture… oh wait hold on who did Georgallis play for again?? Guess we will just have to complain about the orange stripe on the newspaper advert.

Good Post Pokies…
I Love Georgie, I didn't like Fittler...
But I do believe he had the wood on old Georgie!!
You have made a fair comment!!

don't try and turn this into a Balmain vs Wests thing. We're talking about a player who a lot of people here admired for his passion and then you have people like you coming along with your narrow minded, ignorant comments (yes i stand by my comments aswell)

So you pick out one comment i make to Balmain Bug in reference to a topic he has been banging on about since Humphreys has become boss to try and say im turning this into a wests v balmain thing? Whatever, read my whole post and you will see no such intention. Would love to see where i have made discriminating comments about either side of the joint venture.

Again you claim that i'm ignorant and narrow minded because my opinion doesn't match yours.
Why don't you answer my question directed to you about the comparison you made between Georgallis and Beau Ryan?

Get off your high horse, this is a forum if you don't like my opinion don't read it.

if Beau showed the same passion to coaching as he does on the field i'd be more then happy
and your right this is a forum, and if i disagree with what you have to say i'm entitled to voice that.If you don't like people disagreeing with you, don't come here

Happy to have him here but personally wouldnt want him as the next Tigers coach.

He does seem to really have the respect of the Penrith team, so hopefully if any of them are off contract we may be a good chance.

I love it on this forum, no dramas for someone to have a different look on things. Thanks for answering the question.
Hope Steve does a great job as assistant coach next year.

Why?

You only have to see the kerfuffel created in the Riff to see that he had the backing of the players and from an outsiders point of view, they do seem more structured in how they have been playing. Probably highlights more the myth of Mathew Elliot now that they are playing better

Can anyone advise if Peter Gentle is still going to Salford ??

matt parish is their new first grade coach so i assume he'd only be supporting him if he was making the move…

I have seen Matt Parish in coaches boxes lately (Qld?) and had a chuckle. He was one of the dumbest players ever to play for Balmain. Tough, but dumb. Surprised he has made the transition to coaching.

Walsh is a prime example of Georgallis' coaching ability. Pre-Georgallis, Walsh was just a one dimensional half back, under Georgallis his improvement has been out of sight! He's playing great footy at the moment.

I said Georgallis was Wests 'Brad Fittler' .

I did not say he was as good or better than Fittler I said he was 'our' Brad Fittler.

Meaning he was the best version of Fittler that we had.

Seriously though, he was a TOP player at Wests. That is my opinion. By the time the JV started he was probably ready to retire, but in the mid 90's, the bloke was a machine.

Im still not convinced either he's first grade material yet….lets not forget he's here as assistant, he's got 2 or 3 years apprenticeship under sheens if he eventually gets the top gig....can learn a lot in that time

Walsh is hot & cold, he's been going well because theyre playing footy, throwing it around but with a discipline to it.
That said, under Georgie theyve gone away from their strengths last year which was their kicking game, they look half as threatening this season....Im still trying to work that one out

Really hoping this was going to happen..welcombe home Steve an astute signing by all concerned hope he has good input and not be the witches hats guy. He always gave 100% on the field for the Magpies and this seems to be the way he coaches well done made my day!

As long as he's a better coach than he was a player then ill be happy. Usually the average players make the best coaches and i love the flowing and crisp football penrith have produced since he took over.

and what were his flaws as a player?

I would say as a pivotal player, he was quite readable, didnt threaten a lot, wasnt really classed as a dangerous player.
Didnt have a box of tricks, but what he lacked their he made up in tougness commitm, ent and never giving up, a mark o'neill type hooker half
