WESTS Tigers coach Mick Potter will this morning sit down with star player Benji Marshall for the first time and atop the agenda will be the mercurial half's on-field leadership and cutting out the "trick shots".

In a revealing radio interview yesterday, Potter also said new recruit Braith Anasta will be considered at lock instead of halfback.

And he declared the Tigers' maligned forward pack wasn't aggressive enough last season.

"I don't want to tread on anyone's toes, but I thought they could have got forward a bit more, with a bit more vigour," he told Sky Sports Radio yesterday.

How Potter juggles the dominant personalities of Marshall and captain Robbie Farah in his first season at Concord Oval remains one of his main tasks.

He said upon his appointment last week that nobody was bigger than the team. Yesterday, he said he would challenge the pair to become stronger leaders on the field.

"I'll be demanding on him, and I think he will be demanding on himself as well," Potter said of Marshall. "About how he gets around the park, how he cracks the whip on other people, and how he leads. I want him to lead by example. I think he does a good job at that, but I will reinforce what he does on the field every week.

"I don't see them (Marshall and Farah) as being a problem. It's a case of letting them know that they are leaders. They are influential players and everyone looks towards them, the young players look towards them.

"They have to set an example all the time. They have done a good job up until now, but I want them to take it to another step. When it gets tough, they are the ones the young guys look at to get them through."

Potter remains undecided about his halves for next year. Anasta was signed from the Roosters, with sacked head coach Tim Sheens suggesting the veteran would play halfback to take pressure off Marshall.

But under-20s star Jacob Miller is highly regarded, attracting interest from Super League powerhouse Hull.

"Braith can play halfback, but he can also play five-eighth," Potter said. "He's not unaccustomed to lock either. I want to see how they scrub up in the pre-season and where they fit best for the team."

As for the Tigers' signature attacking style of play, Potter said he would be looking for more discipline.

"The style they played was very good but they tilted the balance to being too flamboyant down their own end, not getting out of jail with a really hot kick-chase game," he said. "They would come up with a little trick play they tried once or twice too often."

Asked about the Sheens situation, chief executive Stephen Humphreys said: "There's no update in regards to Tim. I would suspect that it will take some time to resolve and we've said that we'll give him the time and space he needs to consider things."

Looks like your question yesterday Ink has made the second paragraph of his article today, Nice work mate.

In a revealing radio interview yesterday, Potter also said new recruit Braith Anasta will be considered at lock instead of halfback.

But I must of been listening to a different interview yesterday as Potter was non committal what position Anasta would play & said "he can play a halfback role, he can play a 5/8 role & he's not unaccustomed to playing lock either. I want to see how they scrub up in the pre season & who's going to be the best fit for the team".

If anyone's interested in the questions & answers from that interview, I wrote them down in the thread Potter Interview On Sports Sunday 2KY

Definitely going to be a very interesting pre-season now, as I probably would have dismissed Miller from being considered at 7 if Sheens was still coaching the side. I'll also be interested to see what Potter comes up with in regards to the Tigers forwards being more dominant. We're still one of the smaller packs running around next season.

I've always thought that was a myth Willow. It's about attitude more than size. I hope Potter instills the hunger that this side lacks

Time for Robbie and Benji to stop talking and start playing football. Potter doesn't seem like someone who didn't get along with his players. If things flare up with these three, it won't look good for the two play makers.

Looks like we'll be going shopping for some big forwards in 2014

I guess its hard to be dominant when you're sometimes carrying 2 backs on the bench

Warren Ryan reincarnate … Only the Wok is of course not dead yet ... But you get my gist.

No more Benji trick shots, power up the guts, kick into the corners, good chase, force an error
... Win Grand Final 6-4

As long as we are premiers ,who cares how we win it

That's right Benji can still 'flair', maybe not 'lair'.

The amount of times he was caught on the back foot trying to get a decent clearing kick away and failed might be what Potter is alluding to.

I'll be happy if Benj doesn't come out with his usual "my best is about to happen" or "taking my game to another level" type stuff! Just zip and let others say that about you once you've delivered…

doesn't mean he can't youse his flair, just got to know when to use it ..

Which has been his problem since day one

Figure this out ,and you'll be able to solve world peace ,global warming and how to beat Qld at SOO (well maybe not the last one )

I like it….except I hope more like...power up the guts, kick into the corners, good chase, smash them in defence for a couple of sets, force an error.....ok Benj & Robbie, flick the switch.
...

The only reason Wok's Tigers were so tough & dour was lack of strikepower. Perhaps the only reason for Benji's constant trickery is lack of grunt. Would love to combine the two. I dont see the Blocker, Hardwick, Brooks, Maguire, Pearce, Hemsley to pull it off (with the exception of Woodsy).

They did have Jack, Gartner/James Grant, Freeman, Hanley/Currier et al in those teams. A lot of rep players and capable of points so I wouldn't say it was the only reason. Ryan's coaching was a fair part of the team's attitude.

One area of Bemji's game which I was completely unhappy with in 2012 was his clearing kicks. I really believe that he should forget about this part of his gamer and concentrate on what he is good at. Jacob Miller is a natural at clearing kicks and he would certainly be my choice to carry this function along with contributions from Robbie. WT have no problems in the area of field goal kicking with exponents Miller, Robbie and Bennji.

Did anyone notice the article implied a heap of things Potter didn't actually say?

I know he said we over played the trick shots (which we clearly did) and had a tilt to far towards flamboyant (which we did), but neither was the crux of what he was saying, the article implies that he will be reigning Benji right and turn us into St George of 2010…

He has said we he will not change our style too much, just trying put a greater focus on going forward first, agains sensible.

But the interview was more about getting them to be a leader and take control on and off the field.

Anyhow, no biggy, just find it amusing the tangents they take, this one is not too far out of context, but often the articles go way off the initial intent.

I am still waiting to see Benji's next level as he said that he will bring in. It may be the grunt is not loud enough, maybe a stronger grunt may help, an area Potter may like to look into.
