This has been an interesting topic. I am privileged, I suppose, to be able commute to Sydney venues and part with cash to watch my team. I am no more an "expert" than anyone else, though. But, given it seems so many people (on here) don't actually get to games and watch it, how do they form genuine opinions on the team and form etc? Surely if it's through watching on commercial TV or Fox or listening to radio/streaming commentary, there has to be a bit of influence from the commentators on the things that are posted on here? That's the great thing about getting to the game and watching it unfold live in front of you. You form your own opinions and make your own judgments, as stupid as they may be.

I agree 100%,

I was sort of hoping for a response like this.

I attend most home games each year,

I live in ingleburn, 15 mins from ctown station.

I attempt to pub crawl to leichardt, as parking is terrible.

I'm not sure about the atmosphere at anz…

But one thing I know, win lose or draw, the excitement of a game at the ground compared to tv, is phenomenal.

Not every game I may add, but those nail biting, last minute wins, are great to be at.

I still tape the game at home, as I know there is a lot I miss. But the atmosphere is second to none. ( at our suburban grounds)

I just wish they had the earpieces easily accessible at the ground, like the cricket has, where we can receive commentary etc.

Not sure if it is feasible for live games or of there is a 2-3sec delays. Worth looking into though!

To say that people who attend more games will know more about the game than people who watch games on TV  :unamused:

Sorry but I've heard it all now

Yes you are correct the atmosphere is fantastic live

But 4-5 things that might be crucial to the game that a live viewer at the game may have no idea has occurred until they read the paper the following day

I probably see more on TV than I do at a live game….you miss heaps live, the views not always the best...replays if youre lucky, lots of incidents go unexplained live coz ur too far away
I always watch a replay if ive been to a game live...

Hahah !!!
I needed a good laugh !!!
The reason I go to the game is for company, the atmosphere, for a day out and to cheer on my team … I love it !

Sure the view is better on the tele and you get the commentary and you get the replays etc .... But there is no substitute for being at the game. Plus you have the satisfaction of knowing you patronised and supported your team .... You can't do that from the comfort of your arm chair. There's plenty of time when you get to old age for watching on the tele .... But while you are able ... Get out and enjoy the game .... And if you love watching on the tele ... Tape it and watch it all over again when you get home .... Then you can relax with a nice red and enjoy it all over again.

Why do I need to watch the game with a nice Commie Knuckles, not sure my wife will approve ??

I understand what your saying , and if I lived within 100 kms of Sydney I would be at every game my business allowed

I will get to a few local games and will watch virtually every game my young fella plays

For me at the moment ,I'd much rather be able to give my young fella a pat on the back after game and ask him did he have fun with all his mates

Just hard now that I have no family living in Sydney :frowning:

to all the ANZ detractors, the atmosphere at homebush is actually decent IF you get 20k+ but if everyone goes 'it's a crap atmosphere with 12k people' then only 12k will show up every time. I wanna do my part and get those numbers up cause it will seriously make it a good venue to play at and watch at.

Went to a bunnies game with some friends last year and with around 22 23k people it was a great atmosphere! that's the edge something like the AFL has along with some other factors as well, people know it'll be a great atmosphere when they go so they try to go as much as possible!

Ok I'm gonna go there: my main problem with Homebush is that there's no decent pubs within reasonable walking distance and you can only get mid strength beer. I know there are plenty of people who go to games for whom having a few beers is not a priority, but I like to and it p1sses me off that I can't at that soulless concrete coffin in the middle of nowhere. There I've said it.

You must miss it mate …. But having your young bloke there I reckon would more than compensate. You never know mate .... If he makes the big time, you may get down here for a few games yet !

Never had it to miss with my Sydney team Knuckles

Probably up from the age of 5-10 went to every Purtell Park and Lang Park of my mighty Wests Panthers including their two GF's in 75 and 76

Unfortunately the Panthers don't exist in the Qld Cup anymore they died in the 90's after two back to back premierships in 92/93

There was a major push with former Panthers ,Qld and Australian player Tony Currie as the CEO but it looks like with him stepping down as CEO in 2012 that the club has slid backwards again

That was hard to take , especially after spending a couple of seasons with the club in Colts and then in grade

Theres a nice old pub oppsite Concord West station…about the same distance from LO to the old BLC, and the trains at the door.

okay yea that's actually a good point i'd never thought of. I'm in uni so i haven't had a tonne of time to kind of experience that and I usually either get some beers at the game or else I'm driving which obviously means i just bring some water or coke with me.

but for the 'souless concrete coffin' part, did you go to the 05 GF or any SOO? went to a SOO and it did NOT feel anything like a concrete coffin. Even with 25k it felt fun cause you don't notice that the upper tiers are full you just see thousands of fans around you which is good fun. if more people turned up it'd be a better atmosphere, leading to even MORE turning up and in a few years you'd have 20k averages for most sydney teams bar Penrith, Sharks and Manly.

that's why ANZ are givving away so many free tickets and dirt cheap memberships, they want people to come and create an atmosphere leading to more and more coming later in the year or next year when they realise it's not so bad.

Yeah that's where we normally go. It's ok, and avoids the ridiculous change at Lidcombe business. It's a fair trek from the ground, though. Leichhardt Oval to and from the Red Lion just seems more convivial- maybe it's the crowd.

I've been to Origin, the Tigers v Dragons final in 2010 and the Lions test this year so yes, I've been there when it's full (I was still in the UK in 2005). I've also been there with 20-30k in for Souths, Bulldogs and Swans games, and I'm afraid I disagree that it was anything like as good as a similar crowd would be at the SFS or a suburban ground. You're sat miles away from the pitch, drinking mid-strength beer, with an earsplitting PA desperately trying to drum up atmosphere.

What's interesting is that new stadia being built now are almost exclusively trying to move back into the centre of towns. Look at Etihad in Melbourne, or any number of US stadia (San Francisco's baseball ground is a great example). It's all very well giving away tickets but the experiment with bowls in the middle of suburban wastelands has failed all over the world and I think it's unfortunate, to say the least, that Sydney is persevering with this 90s white elephant.

Born in Wollongong, raised in Nowra and live in St Ives on the north shore of Sydney. Don't like my chances of getting to many games next year with work and family life keeping me pretty busy. I'll most likely be parked in front of the TV for most games.

I wonder if i know you. I went to school in Nowra (Shoalhaven High) but did the opposite of you, I grew up in Huskisson and now live in the Wollongong area.

I will attend a few Cambo games and a few ANZ ( i get a 4 platinum passes from a contractor )

so then what do you propose 2041?

A move to CS/LO is financially poor, limits possible 25-30k crowds and is surrounded by poor infrastructure and facilities.

Souths fans seem to be embracing their move to ANZ whole heartedly with memberships soaring along with crowds.

bulldogs are also averaging around 20k.

SFS was fine by me. Urban setting, closer to the money. Parking's not great, apparently. In Melbourne they all get trains to Southern Cross and walk to Etihad.

20k is pathetic for a well-supported club like the Bulldogs. Souths will be getting 5-7k again as soon as they aren't winning all the time. Both clubs are giving out freebies like they're going out of fashion - I got offered six free tickets to the Souths v Manly preliminary final. There is no evidence at all that Homebush does anything positive for crowd numbers.
