Titans v Tigers: Wests coach Jason Taylor wants defensive woes to remain thing of the past

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor wants his player focused on defending their line

MAKING players muscle up in defence was high on the agenda for coach Jason Taylor when he first lobbed at the Wests Tigers.

And this weekend Taylor will quickly find out if all the hard work spent on tackling and defence over the summer will pay off when the Tigers travel to the Gold Coast.

The Tigers had the worst defensive record in the NRL last year when they leaked a whopping 631points.

They even conceded more points than wooden-spooners Cronulla (613 points).

While exciting youngsters Luke Brooks, Mitch Moses and James Tedesco will ensure plenty of points are scored, Taylor stressed the importance of defending their own tryline.

The early signs are good if the trials are any guide as the Tigers gave up a combined 12 points against an under-strength Parramatta, and a Cronulla side still finding its way with new recruits Ben Barba and Michael Ennis in key positions.

Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor calls for patience“I’ve been happy with what we’ve done defensively in the trials, but they were only trials, and you have to keep that in perspective,’’ Taylor told The Daily Telegraph.
“We’ve worked hard in all areas, but it is important we improve there (in defence) because the team was last when it came to defence last year.

“We must improve our defence if we’re to do anything this year.

“Any coach who takes over a new team, the first thing you look at is some of the detail of the performances, and that was an area that stood out.’’

The Tigers have often been noted for their attacking prowess, which stemmed from the free-spirited and side-stepping crowd favourite Benji Marshall.

That reputation has stuck. As Taylor said at the club’s launch, the Warriors were also still pegged as an exciting attacking team, even though former coach Ivan Cleary changed that mindset several years ago.

The cocaine scandal that has rocked the Titans, and led to five players, including representative stars Greg Bird and Dave Taylor, being stood down, means the Tigers are warm favourites.

Asked yesterday if the Titans now had a point to prove, Taylor said: “I’m sure they will, I think that will definitely be the case, and they’ll have some young guys in that team who will be excited by that opportunity to play.

“We expect a tough opposition, but it’s not about them, it’s about us as far as we’re concerned. We need to work hard at what we’ve been practising, and if we can do that for 80 minutes, we’ll be hard to beat.’’

It's one of the KpI's i'm most interested in.

Our Points against has always been woeful. 631pts is almost 30 pts per game

Tiger In The Gong wants this off season to end.

So sick of these feel good mean nothing press releases, lets get on with it and win some games.

The team is good enough, the system in place is good enough, the coach is in favour. We can make the 8.

Defence and injuries have been the biggest issues at this club for the last 9 years. In fact our defence was still crap when we won the title.

I am encouraged to hear that this is JT's focus area. Sheens and Potter hardly ever mentioned how they would address these problems, and nothing ever changed.

for some reason this feels different to the ones we normally see.. "i've had the best pre-season in 5 years", "im the fittest i've been", "i've worked harder than ever before" bla bla. they all seemed like excuses in case you lose.

this seems to be a quote directly to the players.. "i've done all i could, now it's up to you guys to stick to the plan".

probs just me though since it's 24 hours since kick off and im pumped!

I liked what I saw against the Sharks and provided we turn up with more energy against the Titans, I'm confident we'll get the points.

Souths use their defence as a form of attack, they actually belt teams into errors and break down the other teams structures and they are the bench mark. It's the way we need to head in and it seems Taylor has them pointed in the right direction

I posted late last season that Souths have redifined the game, it is a power game now .Your forwards muscle there opposition and do what SuperCoach has described , this puts your attacking weapons on top as the opposing defensive / offensive structure is not coping with the barrage . JT is certainly heading this way as the players that have been let go since last season were not power players , Gavet an exception but there obviously was other reasons.

But will any action be taken when certain players continue to be liabilities in defence?

I think I know the player you are talking about. He's a very experienced back.

Souths havent done anything that clubs like the Bulldogs havent been doing for years.

Cant wait till they come undone.

I think Bulldogs have always focused on being dominant in the forwards, but I do not think they have ever had a defensive line that is as quick as Souths and be blessed with the raw power

Yes there have been clubs with good defensive forwards ..I have been watching this game for a long time and from my perspective the game has changed with the forward power play that Souths have produced that is my opinion.
