Team building, is the Halfback the key player to build around? is 5/8?

I am just thinking about the Galvin situation.

So we sponsor Galvin, Latu and a bunch of others in their development. We pay 500k to get Sullivan here for 4 years as well, which is a lot of sunken cost.

The solution: Buy Luai at 1.2M

Look I get if the next Nathan Cleary walks into the club, we recognise that he will be the next NSW/QLD halfback and we sign them up for 10 years (hopefully making better judgement then we did with Sullivan). .. Halfback is the engine.

Yet will that engine develop? LB we threw almost a decade at making them the halfback.

I just feel with 5/8, what's the point?

If they are GOOD, they will want 1.3M just to turn ball. If they are crap, they will still want 1.3M just to play ball.

Even a Nathan Cleary type player takes a stack of development. Jarrod Mullen, Chris Sandow and a bunch of others fizzled. If Townsend was a Tiger, would we have wanted him for 10 years on 1m?

I kinda feel like why not pick 2x NRL quality centers and stick with them. Then buy our halves, settling on an experienced Halfback (i.e. this time Luai) but letting our 5/8 test the market. Feeling similar with Fullback, although Bula hasn't made anywhere near as much noise as Galvin... Less drama and seems more loyal.

5/8, why not just throw $$ at whatever talent earns that money instead of multi year/multi million deals?

Luai and Galvin have complimented each other very well. The more they play together the better they will get

Bula is a weapon and is not going anywhere

TDS i do not imagine will leave either

Obviously the preference is Galvin stays, however, if he does leave it wouldn’t be the end of the world

Latu would slot right in and Heath Mason isn’t a bad back-up option

My only concern with Latu is his injuries

Huh??

None of this makes any sense!

You need quality players in all positions to be a premiership contender!

I am talking BUY vs BUILD.

We tried for a decade to build LB into an elite halfback.
We have had a bunch of junior players come to us, most on overs, to be the next "halves", i.e:
Sullivan
Latu
Galvin

There was more then 1M in cap spent on people that barely took the field.
Not speaking of Galvin specifically, we have developed him and I guess we can keep him.

Just the next Junior that is the "next best thing" playing at halfback, tempted to say go take a walk.
Why spend years developing players and paying them serious $$$, only to see them demand 1.3M when they actually hit some form.
