I was born in '89…
Me and my older brother had the Playstation as soon as it came out and we spenta lot of time on it through the years.

Got the PS2, Xbox Original when they came out.
PS3 and I did cop the PS4 when it came out - however I don't play it often.

Had a mobile phone, Nokia 3315...

However, we'd be out until the sun set most days.
Swimming, riding bikes, skateboarding, having fun.

Anyways....
In my area - I never see kids riding bikes or outside in general, unless they're waiting at the bus stop for the school bus, playing on their iPhone w/ head phones in.

I go out for dinner and see families' and everyone of them is on the phone throughout the night. Couples, not talking - on their phones, checking their facebooks and whatnot.

Society is messed up.
Thoughts?

@Milky, keen to hear your throughts.

pretty spot on no matter what area you come from….sad, sad and it all started with globalisation

Im with you Demps, i was born in 98"

I never got a phone until i was in year 9 at school and only recieved my own laptop last year because it was required for studies. When i was younger i spent most of my time playing on my bike outside with neighbours or studying.

I got my first job at 13 years old, regardless of what it was, a job is a job, started at Mcdonalds, still remember my parents had to sign a consent form because i was under the legal age, was earning exactly $6.61 an hour, parents made me leave soon after though.

I owned all three playstation platforms aswell, (PS2, PS3, Ps4) was really into WWE games and their online leagues but i never played my PS4 i only bought it for rugby league and it was a let down.

Today technologies biggest problem is really it has taken over our everyday lives, personally its a big problem for me when im studying, easily lose focus and end up on this forum or on social media. I think technology is a big reason why students grades have declined, i don't know how it was back prior to technology but today you only have a fair few smart people in each, the reason behind this is pretty simple…

- much easier to make plans
- procrastination
- online games
- ease to just copy paste
- higher teacher expectations due to having technology, personally at my school you can't escape, teachers today are able to message you online to give you homework or assignments

Whilst technology had been good for society, it has been equally as bad, its a pretty debateable topic, in my opinion it will only get worse.

as a 1950 veteran I feel sorry for youngsters with all the new tech. They are not out there living life in nature and appreciating nature. I have had young guys up here for holidays and they don't go anywhere near the beach or walks to lighthouse or in rainforests. They may have well stayed home on their backsides. I have attempted to employ some doing labouring etc and they are hopeless, would not know how to swing a mattock to kill a snake to save their life. They can't lose themselves in nature in any way, mentally or physically. They would be useless outside of their comfort zone house.

Junior sports players have also decreased by 33%, i remember reading it somewhere, i think that would also be linked to technology.

Personally, up until now, being in my ATAR year i went to work with my dad and played junior league. He is a project manager/property developer so i was doing most of the labouring work etc, started going down with him from like 7 years old but started doing the hard yards at 14ish.

Depends on the person but technology is also a problem.

I was out for dinner with the missus a while back. There was a young couple near us. The woman, very pretty, sat there bored witless for a good half hour while the fella ignored her and played on his phone.

Demps you'll be happy to know outside my house today there must have been 5 or 6 kids playing on various bikes and things. We're going to try and keep our boy off electronic stuff as much as we can but it's inevitable and in some ways beneficial.

Handwriting in schools is becoming a problem as well , Finland has made handwriting non compulsory in schools and replaced this with keyboard skills

As far as I know all high school kids get laptops now for schooling.

I'm all for technological advancements to make lives easier and whatnot but social media / technology is killing real life social interactions.

I deactivated my facebook in 2013 and have no social media -
Only my email and the forums I post on.

Real life friendships have improved as I don't constantly see what people are doing (posting)
So when I see them - there is more to catch up on.

Has it's pros and cons but my life is okay

The kids had been outside a fair bit until the Princess knocked a besser block of the retaining wall garden onto her footy Friday afternoon

Two days later and the Hospital still hasn't rang through whether there was a break or not

You would be disappointed to know that it is not compulsory in Australia either, you are allowed to type whatever you like in class but exams are to be written, there is a science test that is conducted online and there has been pushes to do all tests online.

Schools no longer give out laptops, its up to the student to bring their own.

Funnily enough Finland is one of the highest achieving countries in the world when it comes to academics, they are also considered to have the best education system in the world.

My son's school they are all on chrome book

I was an altar boy for ten+ years yelling out the Latin mass and was terrific training for expressing myself in front of crowds and public speaking. No shyness whatsoever. I don't recommend the altar boy trade but do youngsters have an alternative outlet/inlet for such training.

Born in the 60's. Watched a lot of changes over the years.
Life seemed to be far less complicated then, you made the most of what you had.

If you wanted to go to see a friend, you either rode your scooter or pushbike.
You also learned quickly how to fix your bike, so you could use it.
Many of these were hand me downs, from either relatives or kids who outgrew theirs.
I have scars & stitches scars & metal plates in left thumb area from pushbike accidents/motorbike accidents, but it hasn't stopped me over the years.

As for schooling, lost count of how many times called devils child, by the cranky Nuns.
Still unsure whether it was because I am left handed, or was a " little bit spirited from kindy to 4th class".

Improvement in technology have been good in some areas, but I do think, we also need to know how to do things like:
adding oil to petrol, to have a 2 stroke fuel for mower. knowing where the jacking points on your car are, paint them in yellow, so at night when you get a flat tyre, you don't hurt yourself or damage your car.

**get out and have a go**, and just say hello and thank you & yes please to people.

just little things that can make a big difference.
