Wests Tigers fullback James Tedesco won't let Origin snub affect his club form

Wests Tigers duo Chris Lawrence and Luke Brooks are adamant James Tedesco will not be rattled before Easter Monday's match against Parramatta by NSW coach Laurie Daley's revelation he was not in contention for a start in this season's State of Origin series.

While Tedesco has started the season superbly, Daley said Manly's Brett Stewart, Penrith's Matt Moylan and St George Illawarra's Josh Dugan were in a three-way shoot-out to fill the fullback spot vacated by Jarryd Hayne when he left to trial with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.

Lawrence, a former international, doubted whether Tedesco would be affected by Daley's assessment that he was not ready for the rigours of Origin football.

"I can't comment whether [playing Origin] was on his mind or not, but I don't think anyone has spoken to him [about any disappointment]," Lawrence said before training on Thursday. "And I don't think he'd be thinking about that at this stage. For all the players here it's just about building on our game each and every week, and if we can start putting 80 minute performances together and winning consecutive games then players like 'Teddy' – and a lot of the younger players – are going to put their hands up for representative selection."

Nevertheless, Lawrence, who has played six Tests for Australia, was adamant Tedesco was Origin class.

"Definitely," he said. "I train with the guy every day so I know the skill he's got and obviously everyone's got a taste of that with the limited number of games he's played. I think for Teddy it's just a matter of getting his confidence and building his game through playing consecutive games. Once everyone sees what a great talent he is representative honours won't be too far away."

Brooks echoed Lawrence's sentiments when he said Tedesco was more than capable of playing for the Blues. "He's not thinking about that, he's just worried about playing good footy for the Tigers," Brooks said. "He's one of the best fullbacks NSW has got. He should be considered but, in saying that, he's not too worried."

Brooks said his biggest priority was Monday's match-up against Parramatta's No.7 Chris Sandow, who electrified the Eels in their upset victory over defending premiers South Sydney last Friday night. "He's playing well, he's looking pretty trim and he's looking quite quick as well," Brooks said. "That's going to be a good test for us – stopping him. I think if we can stop their forwards we can stop him."

Brooks said he was still disappointed he missed the field goal that could have sealed a golden point victory in last week's match against Canterbury at ANZ Stadium. Bulldogs five-eighth Moses Mbye booted a field goal to provide his team with a nail-biting 25-24 win. However, the 20-year-old said the biggest lesson to come out of that match was the need to "finish games off" after the Wests Tigers squandered a 24-6 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

If Teddy stays injury free this season and keeps playing the way he has been, next year Daley will have to really consider him as an option for the fullback position..

The title of this article is based on a false premise. It's not a snub if he was never being considered.

Whilst it's probably right that tedesco may need a little more time I can't understand why Daley always publicly announces who's his priorities so far out. He has ruled out Morris who's been outstanding and hopoate who's been an aus schoolboy and tedesco. He did same thing few years back stating pierce our half before season had even started. Wouldn't it be better to talk privately to those he had in mind without knocking the others on the head.

How can the writer claim it is a snub? Tedesco did not play for the majority of last season and has y played all four scheduled games this season. He has done well so far this season and has not been injured. Be thankful and leave it at that.

He is an idiot, hailed as the god of NSW right now by the Media, had Cronk played last season we all know it would have been the other way around, we also got the home advantage. Daley got lucky and even he knows he should not be coach, the NSW board went on to re-sign him for a futher three years, it is rediculous. Tedesco, Morris, Hoppa may not be on his radar but what part of him feels better when he publicly announces this, how does he know Morris won't put in three man of the match quality performances before Origin and force his position im the team. Never has a QLD coach stated "DCE is not in contention, the jersey is Cronks"

There are some pretty good fullbacks out there aren't there.

Personally I'd pick Dugan.

It's not a snub. In time he will be there.
Going to be selfish here, want him playing for wests-tigers, not Origin.

**Origin whilst a good spectacle, does not contribute to any teams getting points, to ensure they make the top 8 at end of season.
In fact is can be the demise of a team's end of season aspirations, when key players are hurt.**

Unlike the halfback position, NSW are blessed with an abundance of talented fullbacks. Stewart, Dugan, Morris, Moylan, Tedesco, Hopoate - you could choose any one of them there and they would do the job well. Heck, even old Gidley is showing some form at the back with the Knights unbeaten so far this season and, let's face it, Gidley is ALWAYS in contention for Origin, if fit, so don't be surprised to see him in the mix somewhere.

Personally, I'd go with blooding Moylan because he has Xfactor and I think he would go great in the Origin arena, but I would have Dugan partnering Jennings in the centres because he, also, can break a game wide open and he defends quite well. I was against moving Dugan to the centres when they did it last year, but it surprised me how well he adapted to the position and kept his opposition in check, so I think - why change something that worked so well?

I don't think it's a snub either, lots of talented fullbacks going around at the moment and given he's only just back from injury…..........let's see how things go for him this year.

In any event, we don't lose him for any games.

Daley is an idiot, how he can come out and say I want a club combo at half and 5/8th is just plain stupid.
For a start the Dogs pair the imcumbent are so far removed from origin quality in attack it is not funny, especially Reynolds who is so over rated.
Then look at Stewart today, made McDonnell look like Slater, and while Dugan scored a try he dropped the ball on his own line twice,Daley should just shut up count his lucky stars some one high up likes him and pick players on form.

James isn't worried , he won't bother knocking on the selectors doors

He will kick the bugger in

Daley won't have a job after this series , you mark my words

He has already said he will quit if NSW loses

To quote Ivan Drago from Rocky 4 ," you will lose"

Daly is an imbecile who will pick a team of grubs that I will have trouble supporting. Teddy is better off going nowhere near daly

It has to be Morris or Dugan - both in great form and both proven performers.
Why does everybody think this is a backhander to Tedesco?
His time will come if he deserves the spot - even Daley has said that.

Exactly. I reckon Teddy is a great player but Dugan and Morris are both guns as well and I think they are both better players than Teddy is at the moment.

Borris fullback experience isn't enough for Origin, he would be caught out. Given we have an overflow of fullbacks I can't see a reason to go with the lesser experienced. Morris on the wing and Dugan/Stewart and even Moylan are terrific options to have.

i dare say teddy will play fullback for nsw as a package with brooks - ala canterbury/souths halves - package deals. It does make sense especially for the wests halves.
