For me **Graham Smith** is one of the greatest players I have ever seen. Not only was a he a great batsman but he was also a fantastic leader. The thought of him coming out to bat against Australia after retiring hurt with a busted arm is one that will last with me forever. **Dave Warner** I think is going to go on to break many Australian records and the fact he is still improving makes it scary to think how good he could get. Those 2 and **Hashim Amla** were hard to split for my top 3, Amla has ridiculously good stats (average of 52) and is one of the most technically correct batsmen around, almost impossible to get out. **Ross Taylor** performs very well over here, even in the past when others have failed, in doing this he and McCullum almost carried New Zealand's batting for a long time. **Simon Katich** is someone who I would have liked to rank higher, he is one of the most underrated cricketers to ever play for Australia and should have played a lot more tests than he did. **Chris Gayle** is a batsman I like to watch for entertainment but a tendency to throw his wicket away cheaply meant I voted him lower. **Graham Gooch** also ranked lowly due to his short time-span of playing in this era. **Phil Hughes** was someone else I would have liked to rank higher, however unfortunately he never really got the opportunity to show his best, or play many matches due to the unfortunate tragedy of his death.

Top 5 pick themselves IMO…there are a lot of great openers which makes it difficult ranking them as the could easily interchange position 5-15 was just a personal preference I got out of watching them play...the bottom 5 Strauss Athers and Gooch struggled against us.. Gayle more of a show pony and Taylor has never opened more a middle order player...

the only reason i have Amla, De Silva and Taylor so low is because between them they have 3 innings opening the batting in tests. Amla is one of the best batsmen in the world but he is a number 3\. Taylor is a 4 as is De Silva. Matt Hayden was devastating opening the batting and could change any match in a session sigh him mate JL. Cook holds records similar to Tendulkar for age i believe although he has dropped off recently. Graeme Smith was huge for south africa and without doubt one of the best openers in the world.

I don't know where or how I've stuffed this up with 21 names on the list with my two not being there in Mark Taylor and Marcus Trescothick.

Matty Hayden isn't one of the options - He got chosen as a middle order bat, that's where you mucked it up.

Thanks Sabre fair enough then. fixed it now

Yeah I got confused as Amla opened in 120 ODI's …makes it a bit of a mockery when he is being rated as an opening batsman in TEST cricket when he's opened twice good point Bazz...

Bazz makes a good point and i'm tempted to change my votes .

That's like one of my players Alec Stewart wicket keeper…...believe it or not he was mostly an opening batsman and that is the reason he has so many runs 8463

If people wish to change the votes, I'll allow it. Please make sure to post that you have done so, so I can adjust my tally.. I made the same mistake as Geo re-Amla. Opening bat for ODI's but not for Tests.

Hang on , when we first brought this up CB suggested we just pick players and didn't have to worry whether they were openers or not

This where this has got so confusing , even with the all rounder thing that Geo brought up yesterday and now with the openers

I brought up one particular idea , CB slightly altered it (as far as openers and something else was concerned )and as far as I knew nothing was changed after that

When was this changed to 1/ pick actual openers and b/ how the line up would be picked as far as all rounders were concerned ??

I've just had an absolute brain melt trying to examine the scores. People have gone in opposite directions using 1-20 as best to worst and worst to best.

Is it 20 = worst
1 = best

?

I think i've got it. 20 to 1, best to worst? Think that's it isn't it?

I will do mine in an hr or two once i'm home and settled.

You got it…you don't rate your own player

Yeah i know, so its basically 18 to 1

20-1 there are 11 Coaches …the player you rate the best gets 20 points and so on down to the player you rate the least 1 point...

There are 22 players. So 20 not including your own. It doesn't really matter if you want to use 20 as the highest or 1\. I'll be able to tell what you mean.

As for opening bats/middle order bats we agreed that we would have those to make voting easier so that we didn't have to rank 50 batsmen.
