I have a mate who deliberately misuses and mispronounces words just to get up peoples noses. It used to drive me nuts till I worked out he was doing it on purpose. He's no slouch being a published author and head of school at a major university. I can see him in some Uni board meeting, dropping clangers and the others thinking; How did this dill get here?

they are called malapropisms. mostly they are used in ignorance, but by definition should be used for effect (deliberately. eg; someone's signature says: i resemble that remark), and no doubt if he is able to do this consciously he is a pretty smart cookie…but i can definitely see this as annoying!

i used to work with a guy who constantly misused words this way, "suposably" was one that comes to mind (although not strictly a malapropism because there is no such word!); it always makes me think that by trying to sound intelligent, doing this results in the exact opposite!

malapropisms are literary everywhere... :wink:

Thought Fletch and Hindy were funny at the start but wouldn't be upset if they shut up about the whole Nepal donkey thing now; surely they are now "flogging a dead donkey"… :deadhorse:

Actually, I'm going to one up myself here and say they should "drop the dead donkey"!!

I think that's funny. So at least one person in the world thinks so.... :wink:

wholeheartedly agree! i have had the misfortune of working with a few of these people, but one particularly machiavellian, sociopathic woman comes to mind. nightmares to work with and no integrity.

I hate when people spell basic stuff wrong such as names…

I saw a guy on LU call Blake Austin.... "Blake Austen" twice.
It's a bit ridiculous.

Saw a few 'Robbie Farrah" around too.
Like honestly, your a supporter of the club, you could at least spell their names (easy names) correctly.

sometimes, it makes me angry too but im never too fussed about it. i notice the mistakes but of late, i've started ignoring them.

it's more the tone of people which is quite annoying. there is this belief that just coz you're on the internet you can say whatever the hell you like in whatever way possible without giving two craps about the person on the other side of the screen.

Mate, not only did someone **not** put their trolley in the trolley bay at my local shop car park this arvo, they placed their bloody trolley right against the back of my bloody car!!! So I had to move _their_ trolley to the trolley bay for them before I could even think about moving my car - lazy, selfish, ignorant, disrespectful, cretin, bastard!

I would never even think about doing that to someone, knowing that they would have to clean up after me and move the thing just so they could get their car out - what the hell is wrong with people??? This cretin had no idea who owned that car either - what if I was an elderly person, who struggled to walk or something? They simply do not care about anyone but themselves! End of rant :rant
 
My girlfriend's a teacher. She believes a lot of today's grammar problems relate to the use of modern day programs such as Microsoft Word and technology (IPhones) where autocorrect is used.

Children are so used to having their mistakes corrected, many times in American English, that it becomes normal to spell words that way because it appears incorrect in spell-check.

It may appear incorrect in the program, but in fact be correct.

Eg. Realize (realise)

Modern-day programs make people very lazy.
