I've always hated this rule which really which advantages a lucky or crap play, like the corner post rule it needs to be tweaked. Its easy done, the receiving team can take the ball whenever they want and the kicking team has to wait till it breaks the 10 metre plane.

Problem solved.

This rule is so dumb. I remember the Jordan Kahu one a few years ago where he thought he scored a try. Seriously, the receiving team should be allowed to pick up the ball even if it hasn't passed 10m. Such a dumb rule.
...
The rule should also include that ball should also must land 10m on the fly if the kicking team is to regather (in other words, it must bounce for them to contest in order to rule whether it traveled the 10m.)

What if your short kick off is a grubber...

If you're kicking a grubber you probably won't be in the contest for it anyway so you may as well just give the possession back to them.

In regards to our own short kickoffs

I am 100% sure I've never seen us succesfuly do 1

Pat Richards used to be able to do them, that's only, what 10 years ago?

even if wests recovered the kick and won by 1, its still a loss. Giving up 2 big leads is the issue that needs addressing.

Hate to say it but it might be the loss that they needed to have (vomit). If they won by one we might not have seen the shakeup we've seen this week. Its put a lot of players on notice and given some a chance to show their worth. They'll go into a Canberra game embarrassed compared to normally coming out of a Canberra game embarrassed.

In saying that, Raiders by 40.

I would hope that the shake up was going to happen regardless of the loss,a win by 1 point would have been just as pathetic a performance

I'm pretty sure if we'd scraped home by a point, There would be very few changes. Perhaps a forward or two, but not Jennings & Marshall.

The whole dialogue after the match would have been along the lines of us being a little out of sorts for some reason which we'll address during the week but we found a way to win and we'll make a few tweaks to the team. Oh yeah, and how about that Benji field goal!

Funny what a loss does to a summary.

Has nothing to do with the feet, if the ball was on the ground would it have been over any part of the line? If yes, then it's play on. If the tip of the ball was still only 9.9m then technically it was a penalty. It was a very close call. The problem was niehter the touchie nor the ref was in position to make a call, so they didn't. If we had a captains challenge we could have appealed this, but we wasted it.

In any case, the turning point was the jennings/mbye missed intercept 15 mins into the first half. We take that and mbye runs 90m and we beat Titans by 30. We somehow messed it up and they score soon after and it's game back on...

Which if we're honest, is what this club has been all about since inception.

Yes we wasted our Captain's challenge on a 50/50 call at best, unless you are 100% certain with a challenge leave it until a game changer like that short kick off.

Can you use it in this situation? I thought you could only call one in a breakdown, like a knock on or penalty.

All that matters was that WTs players were happy to let it bounce. They should have got that ball at all cost and not played for a penalty. However, that didn't loose us the game.

I don’t think you understand the rule. If the tigers play at the ball before the ball passes 10m from the kickoff, Then it’s a penalty to Titans. There was not much they could have done apart from try and position themselves better along the 10m line.

You are right you can't..only way possible is if the scored from the kick off and the ref went to the bunker to check..

I doubt you can challenge when a ref calls 'play on'... Though every year so many rule changes so who knows

This is where the captains challenge is useless. That kick off was one that would be an automatic challenge but because there is no stop in play it can;t be challenged. Do you wait until a try is scored then say i want to challenge the kickoff 6 tackles ago. Stupid system. You have morons in the bunker twiddling their fingers for 90% of the game - why can;t they call it. They overcall the refs on foul play.

What if your short kick off is a grubber...

If the short kick is a grubber the kicking team players won't be fast enough o get in front of the ball ...that's the biggest problem as I see it two players play on

Watching that kick-off, I thought, jeez that bounce was so bloody unlucky, why does crap like this happen to us so often?
But after Madge echoed what we all know to be true - you would have to say that crap like that happens because we deserve it! I think in sport, luck favours the enthusiastic players or teams, if you force the momentum in a game then luck seems to serve you and the bounce of the ball goes your way more often than not. If you are uncommitted then luck passes you by.
(on that deep and meaningful note, I'm going to sleep).

I hope you are correct @TigerSJ when you say "luck favours the enthusiastic players or teams", as Mr. enthusiasm himself.... Josh Reynolds, is playing on the weekend.

Reminds me of the old sayings, 'you make your own luck', or 'fortune favours the brave'.
