The Benji Legacy

@upthetigers

Are you that upset over my OPINION lol

Tissues in isle 4 !

“It’s not about winning or losing”
..”it’s about playing with your mates “
….Benji Marshall !

That's a pretty weird thing to take exception to. Look at how all the players act after games they're all mates with each other.

I'd say one of the key Benji legacies was when he was at the height of ability and potential our then genius coach Sheens decided we didnt need a dedicated halfback to organise the team. Benji was never an organiser, but an opportunist, without a true organising halfback like Prince beside him Benji was a wasted asset.

A secondary legacy in my opinion is that a league team has all different positions and strengths these positions give to the team, ignore one like Sheens did and the team suffers- hence part of the reason for our drought when er were theoretically at the peak of our strength and ability. Nothing against John Morris, but he sure wasnt a halfback, as such Benji's potential match winning ability suffered in the period we should have been doing a hell of a lot better after the 05 premiership.

If Lui didn't beat up his wife I'm sure we would have got another premiership.
Lui took all the pressure off and was great in 2010 and 2011\.
We got so close. Once he left it all went to crap and we never had a true halfback to compliment Benji since Lui's departure.

Sheens butchered Benjis career by not signing a recognised 1/2 when Prince left …. just tried to manufacture one sad really .From a personality , draw card and footy brilliance there has never been anyone close that has put a Weststigers jersey on IMO!

Funny thing is people go on about benji in 2005 but his best footy was 2010 to 2011\. Golden boot in 2010 and great again in 2011\. He played better in thise two years. Funny this club has only played finals in benji three best years but fans like to put the slipper in. I say this also about robbie too fans deride them but we have been a nothing club without them. Be honest they had to be close to the best players on the planet for us to be good. When they where average we lost.

Very astute comment!

Benji was an outlier. He and Farah both will leave the game as premiership winners. As they should, many a time one, the other or both would win us the game off their own backs.

It hurt when he left. And then to hear him say that he wasn't putting in for us when he was away from us sucked even more. At least he was honest if nothing else.

I suppose we have Sheens to blame for not making sure an established seven played alongside him his whole career.

I really think that has more to do with how his relationship with Potter turned out, I think he lost his self belief a little towards the end of that period.

We had no money for an established half.

It’s been well recorded that players were taking less to keep their mates at the club as it was.

Don’t blame Sheens blame Scott Prince.

He’s the guy given a house on the Gold Coast - not known for quite a few years later of course.

Who do I blame for Benji admitting he didn’t put in?

Sheens…always Sheens..

I blame Sheens..Ah the memories..

Some of the comments here are nothing short of ridiculous or, at best, C grade trolling.

27 test matches for the Kiwis 300 'ish NRL games, a premiership, finals footy… the list goes on.

All this from a bloke who started out as a skinny touch footy player who nearly quit the game after some horrific shoulder injuries.

Last year he was still smashing it.

The bloke is a club legend and a legend of the game.

It’s a tough one isn’t it…... when I hear the name Benji Marshall all I think of is (Rocks and Diamonds) more diamonds when he still had speed in those legs to offer. He just has never been able to close out a game and still has schoolboy errors in him. Given he can put someone through a hole but his time is up imo. We can’t carry him or Reynolds off the bench this season, but I’m thinking they will both be in the 17 come rd 1.

Benji is a legend absolutely. But there's an obvious reason why he very nearly retired before this year. I don't know if he's still at a level befitting NRL. Luckily if he is selected and isn't quite up to 80 minutes a week, we have Reynolds.

At least we shouldn't have to play second rowers in the wing or centre slots.
