The gesture

Kangaroos forward Corey Parker says New Zealand prop Martin Taupau's throat-slitting gesture in response to a Sam Thaiday crusher tackle is not a good look for the game.

Following his side's 26-12 loss to New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday - the Kangaroos' third consecutive loss against the Kiwis - Parker took offence to the reaction of Taupau, who made a gesture towards Thaiday which involved him scratching his thumb across his neck.

Before the gesture was made Thaiday put Taupau in a headlock, but it was his extreme reaction to the tackle which not only surprised Thaiday on the field, but outraged Parker off it.

"I was on the bench when that happened and to be very honest, that's not a good look for the game, gee whiz," Parker told Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast on Monday. "He [Taupau] is passionate and he's sort of their go-to guy off the bench but if you were a young kid looking in the stands watching that, I don't know what you're going to think."

The heated exchange came midway through the first half as an inspired New Zealand side steamrolled Tim Sheens' lacklustre Australians. The gesture was also replayed on the big screen which resulted in a roar of disapproval from the Brisbane crowd.

"I don't condone that [gesture] but he's certainly come a long way in 12 months," Parker said. "I think it would be fair to say 12 months ago you might not have known too much about Marty Taupau, but certainly you do now."

After the match Taupau was reluctant to speak about the incident and was downplaying his outburst, saying he and Thaiday had since moved on.

"It's probably best not to say anything," Taupau said. "Whatever happens on the field stays on the field. After that me and Sammy, we're good.

"We've spoken about it and it's all good, it's all gone."

However the incident did not go unnoticed on social media, as many fans debated whether the gesture overstepped the line in the heat of battle.

Good on Marty,he is passionate and always plays fair and cleanly..Thaiday didn't have to put a choke hold on him,if anybody has had that happen to them,it isn't very pleasant…

Marty only made a gesture during the heat of the game, big deal, what if Thaiday had of fractured Martys vertebrae or done something more serious, what would SOCIAL media said then..

Gamesmanship,I'm all for it,if people know Marty, then they know the man...he is great...

As for Sam and social media.... :bawling

Is Parker serious ?…Loved It...passion and pride...Shame the Roos didn't feel the same...

Can't wait till we play the Donkey's...

Geez these queenslanders are whingers. About time 80% of the Aussie team wasnt made up of the queensland dads army.

I guess it was ok for one of your own to do it.

Well done Mr Parker, well done.

^^Watch Parkers mate in this Youtube clip ^^

I thought it was cool, and was hoping Taupau would have a crack next hit-up so the Aussies could kick him in the teeth. Both clashed pretty much straight after the incident, but nothing continued.

Seriously though, its part of the game, got left on the paddock, so leave it there.

Your an idiot Parker!

Ironic that Parker's captain yesterday is also the captain of Melbourne which for many years got away with using the choke hold in their tackles without penalty. Anyway I can imagine how Taupau would have felt struggling for breath whilst a player was in the process of putting a choke hold tackle on him.

So actually doing the choke hold is ok but a "f u" reaction is not? Alrite buddy. Liked Parker, not a big fan of him anymore.

Can't believe Thaiday only got grade 1 for it. Should've been out for a month that bloody cheap shot merchant.

Pulling into Corey's house as we speak…

As much as I have liked Corey as a player,he should not have made a statement regarding Marty…it only makes it look worse for the Aussie boys, you know sour grapes, excuses etc....

Whilst I can appreciate the gesture itself is not a good look for the game, there's no doubting Taupau's passion and aggression on the field. At least he's also smart enough to leave it on the field and not make comment about it.

That was a nasty choke hold from Thaiday - not just a crusher. It only takes a few seconds to lose consciousness from such a hold - I know from first hand experience. So EDIT Parker!

Bit of theatrics.
WWE style drama, need more of it in the game.

I love legit BEEF !
Remember when Michael Jennings said he HATES parra.
We need more of it.

Nothing too serious but keep the rivalries alive.
None of this, we're all good mates , beer after the game nonsense.

I'm pretty sure a couple of the Kiwi players used the exact same gesture towards the end of the Haka, so I guess it's ok to use it in that context, but not when Taupau did it?
