The Laurie Daley pearls of wisdom thread

Lockyer is another one. Great player and great guy, but he's only one octave away from sounding like Gary Larson

Some people just aren't meant to be in front of a camera Jazza. Sad to say the majority of players who have gone into the media after retirement have no right being anywhere near a microphone. Doesn't say a lot about Rugby League sadly

I think some of them feel that they can just appear on TV and everything will flow out for them perfectly.

It doesn't just happen like that, newsreaders are good because they have had years of training and practice.

Ex footy players need to realise that they may not be television material. Although in saying that I think TV networks need to realise these things as well and not just think "Oh he was a great player, lets through a lump of money at him and get him onto our network".

You totaly nailed it Jazza. Rugby League is the only sport in Australia, and i dare say the world that hires ex-players based on their ability on the field, not in front of the camera. You watch AFL and Union shows on Fox and they are filled with guys who have great elocution, then you watch our shows and you have guys like Tallis who can't string a coherent sentence together without saying 'mate' 5 times. Then the Johns brothers and Fittler who all talk out of their nose. It isn't a great advertisment for League

Ive noticed that as well, same with Soccer or "Football", Mark Bosnich, Robbie Slater, and Andy Harper are well spoken and they also have Simon Hill and Mel McLauchlan. On Fox Sports NRL they have Warren Smith and I think Ryan Phelan is good too, but they're not ex footy players, they are proper, well trained presenters with years of experience.

The thing that annoys me about Andrew Johns is that when he was going through his contract negotiations and there was speculation he would go to Union. Ch 9 actually stepped in and basically said and I am paraphrasing here "If you stay with the NRL we will give you a job once your career ends". And with Fittler, I can't help but think may Gyngell had something to do with it when he was sacked from the Roosters, Gyngell is on the Roosters board and maybe an agreement was made that they will sack him as coach and Gyngell will get him a job at ch 9\. Tallis always seems to end his comments with "Or something".

Tallis always sounds like he's talking about the game over a beer down the pub. Maybe the worst speaker i've heard on a televison. I sure hope he doesn't do any public speaking

Just heard a good one by Loz from 08 when he was on Channel 9\. The Tigers-Dragons game is on and he said with great enthusiasm, 'how good of a player is Sagi Letu going to be?'

uhhh who Loz?

After seeing Nightingale on the Game Plan last night he has no future in television at all.
So extremely dull and boring

What about Freddie tonight. They were talking about the rain and Freddie says 'the sky is looking pretty dark'. It usually does at 8 o'clock at night

Heard a good one from wally Lewis on Friday night broncos v Newcastle. Dummy half threw a forward pass to jarrod Mullen and wally says "them passes have to go backwards every single time" hahahaha

Laurie Daley is a pedantic bore who makes me retch every time he opens his mouth. I will say this in his favour: he has worked on his grammar and it no longer appears that he went to the Blocker Roach School. That is, until he gets a bit excited and than he reverts to his natural state.

AFL, your Joking, Sam Newman, Jacko, Brerreton, Brendan Fevola, just to name a few.

NRL players as well as AFL boofheads bring ratings because of a players personal following. Now I doubt Sam Backo would get a run, but The Footy Show rates highly with fans, that's why they win Logies, and they are astute enough to know when a player's use by date on TV is over. Regardless of what people think of Vauton, he has always enjoyed great popularity, as has Sterling, Chief, Blocker, and others over the years. The footy show has sporned many to go onto other forms of Media, whereas many would be back digging ditches, or doing a garbo run.
Good on them for finding employment for them after their playing career's are over.

Brent Tate ruled knock on which replays showed was NOT a knock on - referee mistake in fact.
Daley: "Yeh, I think it was a good call."
Guys got no idea

Heard one of the most moronic comments ever from Blocker tonight. In the Titans-Roosters game, Roosters up 18-6 with 10 to go, went for a shot at field from 10 out right in front and missed, and the first words out of Blockers mouth, 'why would they go for a field goal there?

:unamused:

I heard one from Laurie last night on "Chooseday Night Football". Stacy Jones put in a long clearing kick and Laurie said "You have to find space with your long kicks".

Laurie Daley calling the knights panthers game tonight "why would he run down the short side, they have 14 players down that side"
