The Luai dilemma...

On current (team) form, our coach has an interesting predictament, between now and the time Luai is back.

Historically, the idea has always been to build around Jarome Luai. However, when a player is earning $1.2 million per season, influence must be immediate and visible. The club needs him to lead, to influence. They need him to deliver in moments that shape games.

His abscence (and the team success) has me thinking about how coach Marshall will view his return and inclusion into the lineup.

In a broader context, whether a star player should automatically return to the starting lineup during a winning streak is a complex coaching dilemma with no single right answer, though experts and sports psychologists often suggest that team performance and chemistry should take precedence over individual status.

There is no doubt that our coach has BEGUN the to blend a combination of effective roles, without necessarily singling out a specific player or role within the club, including his own. I dare say that we are STARTING to understand that a great team is not top down, more flat than anything. Everyone from the head coach to the last reserve on the bench has full understanding of what a winning combination looks like...from pushing the first team in practice to taking control of the game in crunch time, to making strategic and appropriate substitutions throughout. And it starts with the culture initiated by those leading the team.

Do we see Luai as part of this process OR perhaps a star in his own right but one that is foreign to this (current) constellation? If the premise of the WT sitting second on the ladder is that we are winning, and playing a good brand of football, can we exclude the Luai factor, and perhaps consider other immediate reasons such as better team dynamics and flow, better focus and responsibility amongst individual players, and perhaps a little “chip on the shoulder” mental toughness by players on the team hoping to prove critics wrong that they really can win without their star? (Twal, Doueihi come to mind). Or maybe the success witnessed with Luai out should be attributed to great coaching, as the stakes are that much more increased for the coach to make the best of a tough situation.

This is a good "problem" to have. Getting it right may well play a part in how succesful the West Tigers will be this year.

Regards to all.

Luai is back in this squad as soon as possible, our left side attack and defense has been very ordinary without him. Madden is more of a threat to AD's position than Luai's. AD is playing injured so I'm guessing he will have a spell when Luai is back and you will see Jock at 7 and Luai at 6. AD will be back at 7 once he is well enough to take over the kicking duties.

I think the tricky part here is that we’re not actually isolating one variable — we’ve changed both halves dynamics at the same time. Madden isn’t just coming in alongside the same structure; Douiehi’s role has shifted as well, so we’re effectively comparing apples with grapefruits.

That makes it hard to draw any firm conclusions about what’s really driving our performances. Is it Madden’s control? Is it Douiehi taking on more of that Luai-style role? Or just a better-balanced system overall?

Until we actually see a proper Luai–Madden 6/7 combination with clearly defined roles, it’s mostly guesswork.

And if it does turn out that Madden’s steady hand is what unlocks Luai, then it raises a bigger question — where does that leave Douiehi?

IMO Madden should start until Douiehi is 100%

Douiehi brings valuable leadership and has a good kicking game but he cannot kick right now so I would say play him on reduce minutes until he is back to full health.

Sorry Tiger_Heart but what exactly is the point you are trying to make? I might have lost it in all the detail. If you are discussing the quandary Benji finds himself in when attempting to sort the team on Luai's return, then I agree, it's a nice problem to have. There is no question that Jarome comes straight back in and I don't see a dilemma. He is the team's leader, is vocal, respected and has great skills as a 6, both defensively and offensively. His salary is secondary. The question is whether to keep Jock and move Douehi or not. Personally, I would.

Luai is first picked every week. The club specifically recruited to make sure we have great depth in this position and it’s paying off. I think as Tiger fans we panic when we have choice and want to cram everyone in cus we aren’t used to it
Luai at his best is a 4 time premiership and origin winning 5/8 and our captain on and off the field he will be Benjis first picked on the team sheet

Luai straight back to 6 as others have said

I agree that if Luai comes back soon, AD should have some time off to recover as opposed to risking him

Otherwise AD to centre until Taylan is back, then we have another dilemma lol

Luai straight back in.

Our attack is still struggling in my opinion. We are great off 2nd phase play due to offloads, but we are regularly camped in the opposition 20m zone for 3-4 sets in a row and not even firing a shot at the moment.

Truthfully, the game should have been put to bed with 20-25 mins to go yesterday. Parra were defending constantly, had no ball at all.

Point is - do you change a winning team just to accomodate a star player? Whilst I don't deny his ability, at 6, the team is showing they are capable of playing and winning without him. Does slotting Luai at 6 create an inbalance in the current team? Or does it strenghten it? On the balance of responses, the latter seems true.
Without drawing comparisons, I was also thinking of the troubles the dogs are having with a former star of ours, and how they seem to be trying to fit a square peg in a round hole 😎

No problem at all. Straight in and quite different to the Galvin debacle!
