THERE'S still four months of pre-season ahead, but the heat is already on at Wests Tigers.

In a bid to prevent soft tissue injuries such as calf strains and hamstring tears, coaching staff have embraced the Bikram yoga sessions more readily associated with trendy 20-somethings who populate Sydney's inner west.

Every Wednesday at noon, the entire Tigers squad spend an hour assuming various bodily contortions in a heated room set at 40 degrees.

But with the sweat and grunts of 38 players drenching the air, high performance coach Luke Portese estimated the actual temperature can approach 50 degrees, giving Aaron Woods and Tim Moltzen a rare excuse for wearing nothing more than budgie smugglers.

"We've had yoga instructors at the club before, but we wanted to try something different this year," Portese said.

"I'd actually never done it before; it was recommended by Robbie Farah and Adam Blair who had both done a few sessions and really found it beneficial.

"I did some research and found the increased range of motion with the heat really increases your overall flexibility, which means you'll have less chance of suffering a soft tissue injury because there's less tightness."

The price of this new age injury prevention measure is approximately one and half litres of water that the average player loses for each visit.

"We are only doing it until Christmas, because there's a concern about overall dehydration and we have to be really careful to ensure the players take care of themselves," Portese said.

"They are all given hydration drinks immediately afterwards and we have a pool session to recover."

Injuries have hit the Tigers harder than any club over the past two years, with star players Chris Lawrence, Keith Galloway, Woods and Moltzen all sidelined for extended periods.

In response the club has beefed up its High Performance Unit (HPU), hiring sports scientist Naomi Wallace and an additional physiotherapist.

Apart from the Bikram yoga and an open sea paddle board race off Thirroul a few weeks ago, the Tigers are concentrating on the basics this summer.

"We're doing a lot more game related conditioning and getting away from the long distance stuff," Portese said.

"Every year since Wests Tigers has been founded we've done the Wanda sandhills, but we won't be doing them this year.

"We're trying to get away from the mundane stuff, change things up, and make it more interesting for the guys."

thought he had short hair. surely he couldnt have grown it that long in a few weeks….?

so awesome to hear the tigers have made changes to the HPU!!! i was calling for an overhaul of this group last season as it seemed the tigers were losing way too many players to injury.
also good to hear they arent just going the old fashioned slog in pre-season.
Fiagatusa looks like a beast! like the tigers own monster gene simmons!

Wonder how this will help us from being overpowered by bigger ,stronger and faster forward packs ??

Well it helps if we can keep Galloway,Woods,Gavet,Brown and god knows who else is injured or was for large parts of last season.

Its a change and we could use a few of those.

I like how some people think this is a bad idea…
Somehow I don't trust the expert opinion of forumers over actual trainers. I wonder why...

Its an hour a week spent trying to reduce the recurring issue of soft tissue damages throughout our season. And its backed up with solid medical evidence to support it.

But yeah screw it, just make them pump the guns and run sand hills like they used to do decades ago.

Go down to park footy training sessions and you would be amazed just how far even lower levels have progressed past weights and tackling bags.

by allowing us to play our biggest, strongest and fastest forward pack. not our NSW Cup bench.

some people seem to think this is all they are doing every day. they probably train numerous hours a day with intense fitness in the preseason.

they are taking an hour or two from one day in a WEEK for this, due to the recommendation of farah and blair (ex storm player, a team that suffers surprisingly few soft muscle injuries), which was then followed by careful consideration by experienced and professional trainers.

it's not some voodoo eastern medicine found on a dodgy website.

yup, i think left is fiagatusa right gavet. and who is the farthest right one? he looks familiar from NYC i think but i don't know his name.

And I wasn't saying it was voodoo pHyR3

I'm just asking the question if we aren't doing the Sandhills as previously stated in the article and are concentrating on match conditions when are we going to run some fitness into these blokes

Lack of fitness will run us into as many injury issues as will lack of flexibility

Mate this isn't strength training etc,

It's about control and flexibility, but which are important in Reducing injury and increasing speed etc.

It comes hand In hand with the hard strength and fitness work.

sandhills will just be replaced by other forms of fitness, less oldschool ones i assume?
