The Years of inconsistency with Marshall & Farah

This post is not to detract from the wonderful years of enjoyment provided by Benji & Robbie and the amazing skills that both players bring to Rugby League and the Wests Tigers! Before I go on further I will also acknowledge that I witnessed both these special players taking the field tonight playing wounded, with Marshall clearly hampered by his injured left knee and Farah a shadow of his past with a groin problem that obviously requires surgery.

Over the past approximate 7 years Tiger supporters have been subjected to the silky touch football skills and adhoc play of Marshall and clever dummy half plays of Farah with both players at times demonstrating talent that most players could only dream of! But all that aside we have also witnessed far too regularly both players believing that they can pull of the impossible plays on just about every 2nd-3rd play, and this in turn has gifted possession to the opposition and in most cases the Tigers end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

As a result the Wests Tigers inconsistency and failure to make the semis in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 (and not looking good for 2011) is I believe the result of the coaching staff building the annual game plan around both these talented footballers. It does make sense for any coach to use these players as the go to guys but if they are injured or off their game the Tigers look like lost sheep. Yes a number of clubs are not the same without their stars e.g.Darren Lockyer, Cameron Smith, Billy Slater etc, but when these players take the field for their clubs their mistakes are minimal yet their skills are still there for all to applaud!

I can hear Tigers supporters saying that it is a team game and that plenty of other players have cost the club 2 points and on occasions this is correct, but because Marshall and Farah handle the ball far more than any other player if they fail to pull off the miracle plays we invite the the opposition back into the game. There is no doubt that coach Sheens has encouraged these plays but seemingly on a yearly basis the Tigers lose more games than we win!

Whilst as supporters we should never give up hope of the season still being fruitful it may be time for Tim Sheens to rest Marshall until his knee has healed (it may take another 3-4 weeks rest) and send Robbie Farah off to the surgeon for a groin operation and start planning for 2012? With McKinnon, Payten, Moltzen, Gibbs, Fifita and possibly Ryan and Heighnington moving on then the Tigers coaching staff are in tough situation to find a top 17 each week that are actually playing for each other and the club!

Regardless, I just hope that an off-season can see the coaching staff spending hours and hours with Marshall and Farah and drumming into them to limit the miracle passes that go over the sidelines and pull back on the ridiculous kicks that come off seemingly one or twice out of every ten attempts. Both players are enjoyed by thousands of footy followers but their inconsistency is breaking the hearts year in and year out for Tigers fans.
PS: Yes I also acknowledge that the Tigers have had numerous long term injuries that have affected the club but so too have a number of other clubs yet the game plan is the same, just give it to Robbie and Benji and hope they pull of the miracles otherwise we resemble a club being coached devoid of alternative ideas.

I think that is harsh on Farah particulary who has been great most years and almost winning the Dally M for the last 5 years and this year he has been and continues to play injured - it was in the paper he needs surgery and the club needs to make that call and should have already this year and he would have been fixed. This season has shown just how committed Robbie is.

I agree that Benji does have issues with mistakes but is still one of the best players in the comp - but with benji I definatly see your point.

Rugby League can seem like a very complicated game, but at the end of the day it's actually quite simple - ONLY THE TEAM WITH THE BALL CAN SCORE POINTS. Completion rates are absolutely critical in the modern game and that's what separates the top sides from the bottom. I believe we achieved something like 16 completions from 34 possessions or thereabouts. That's total self destruction. Any one of the top sides would have completely smashed us.

Tonights game against Parra saw so many tries go begging with bad final passes or poor options taken. None of the grubber kicks worked either. Not sure why we don't at least kick a few bombs in the in-goal because majority of the time it's pure luck with where the ball will end up. It's a 50-50 chance and if you keep doing it eventually you have to jag at least one. When you're out of form and nothing else is working there is no harm in throwing up a bomb. We seem to be more interested in throwing miracle balls every time which only hands over possession and puts pressure back on us.

Bottom line, we need to get back to basics and complete more sets. We have the players and skills to do the razzle dazzle stuff but we need to get the fundamentals right first. NO BALL - NO WIN!

Shano - the coach is bad at that mate.

dont know how the poor completion rate is sheens' fault.

seems to be the same rants about sheens and sack sheens time and time again from the same people.

Is he focusing on catching drills, picking the same players with those issues? It does come down to the coach, the game plan he wants them to play and how well drilled they are.

People who bag Benji and Farah are deluded. Seriously, just go support another team.

I'm not saying they can do no wrong, but all this rubbish that they should be dropped etc is just that… rubbish.

They both shouldn't be dropped but anyone who can't see their faults is also delusional.

Farah for a number of years was as good or better than Cameron Smith and Danny Buderus. For whatever reason he is now an inconsistent player and it hasn't been just this year. He must be getting paid a lot over what he brings to the team at the moment.

Benji was for a number of years brilliant and terrible within the same game. He appears to have turned the corner last year and this year (apart from last night) but I still think we need more out of him. I think that this may partly be coaching but laying it all on Sheens is a bit rich.

For all the criticism of Sheens these two player have to lead us and at the moment they aren't. Sheens needs to get a game plan together that gets the best out of these two players especially Benji but both of these players really need to step up.

As I said, my post is not to criticise their obvious talent but to just highlight their over zealous play week in and week out! Yes we have seen both Marshall & Farah pull off the magical plays and win us games we should never have won e.g. a few weeks back when Benji broke the hearts of Warriors supporters with that come from behind win. But seemingly every week these two players do something eccentric which invites the other team back into the contest and we as supporters are struggling with heart palpitations right up unto the full time siren.

The coaching staff MUST find a balance with these two great players and we witnessed it again last night when on a number of occasions they both thought they were Harry Houdini! I am convinced they both have played a big part in the Tigers currently sitting with 7 wins and 9 losses and this is considerate of all the unrest with player movement and injuries. Melbourne Storm have weathered the State of Origin commitments with their big three and even won games without them so what is it that has them sitting at the top of the competition table and the Tigers now outside the eight?

As I said this is NOT a thing that has happened just in 2011, the Tigers record of making the play-off's speaks for itself over the past 7 years.

I think it's the weeks when Benji is trying crazy passes and playing an up tempo game we tend to win matches, it's when he plays a structured game that we struggle. I hope Benji also plays what's in front of him and takes risks!

As for Robbie I think he has been extremely consistent over the past couple of years and as boonboon said has challenged for the Dally M almost every season besides this current one. He is quite obviously struggling with his injury which is obvious when you compare him this year to past years. Looking back I believe we would've had a better season had he just had his surgery and we blooded a fulltime hooker from reserve grade. Never the less Robbie's a champion for giving it his all this year and battling on despite injury to try and help the team.

This is the point of my topic that Benji trys the crazy passes and ridiculous kicks **far too often!** Certainly a structured and patient game is possible for this foot-balling genius? Wait, wait and then wait some more until the opportunity presents itself or at least when the Tigers have good field position.

Until he can balance his game and the coach can deliver a game plan week in and week out that doesn't need Benji to create the winning plays then the Tigers will be struggling to win more games than they lose. We must get away from being a team that can't win unless the Marshall/Farah show is hot to trot as whilst it is extremely entertaining it will never have us leading on the Premiership table like the Storm and the Dragons.
