Exciting young Wests Tigers five-eighth Curtis Sironen has been named in the Australian U18s Schoolboys team to tour New Zealand in October.

Sironen was one of three Wests Tigers contracted players to have made the 17 man Australian U18s team which was named today following the completion of the Australian U18s Schoolboys Championships at St Marys.

He will be joined on the tour by contracted Wests Tigers players in lock Brendan Santi and second-rower Andrew Vela.

Sironen, one of the young guns in the very talented Wests Tigers U20s side this season, was named the player of the match for NSW Combined Catholic Colleges in their semi-final win.

NSWCCC won the national U18 championships in which Sironen and Wests Tigers contracted player Mitchell Moses were a part of. A five-eighth/half-back, Moses will play SG Ball for Balmain Tigers next season.

Santi will join Wests Tigers U20s squad soon after being named the Player of the Carnival.

A product of Bass High School, Santi captained the NSW Combined High School team and played SG Ball for Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs this season.

Vela is a student at Keebra Park High School who will join Wests Tigers next season after representing the Queensland Schoolboys at the Australian championships. He was named Queensland Schoolboys’ Most Valuable Player.

Kurtis Rowe, the talented Queensland Schoolboys full-back, was unlucky not to make the final Australian Schoolboys side. He will join Wests Tigers next season after completing his studies at Keebra Park.

I went down and watched the final, did not realise the 2 QLD boys were tigers to be….would have kept a better eye on them. Im not giving any secrets away, but Curtis looks quality.

I thought David Nufaluma was still at school, I did not notice him playing tho (mind you i was doing more talking than watching at times) can someone confirm whether he was eligible ??

David is still at school and was eligable..was actually chosen in the CCC team but decided not to play in this tournament..for whatever reason I do not know.

Schoolboys - 1st Test Result : NZ Residents 28 beat Australian Schoolboys 26

http://www.nzrl.co.nz/news-archive/nz-residents-18s-too-strong-for-assrl.aspx

An early try to Australian Pat Mata'utia in the opening minutes of the game, followed in quick succession by team mate Nene McDonald certainly did not dispel the NZ Resident 18s hunger for a win.

The youngsters, who only joined each other in camp for the very first time this week, fought hard in wet and windy conditions at Bruce Pulman Park in Papakura, with a come-back try by David Fusitu'a (Auckland Pride), which was successfully converted by Honeti Tuha (Counties Manukau). Only a few moments later Counties Manukau player Trent Bishop crossed the line to bring the score to 14 - 10 to Australia at half time.

An injury to star player Viliami Lolohea early in the 2nd half only pushed his team mates to play harder with Esera Esera (Auckland Pride), Trent Bishop and Kurt Robinson (Wellington Orcas) all crossing to score only moments apart.

Even with a last minute try to Australian Jake Trbojevic, when the final whistle blew, the NZ Resident side had proven to strong for the Australian Secondary Schoolboys, nudging them out of a win with a final score of 28 - 26.

Tony Kemp, NZRL Football Manager said, "it was one of the hardest, heart stopping matches I've watched in a very long time. Both teams played to win and the passion displayed out there was second to none."

"If today is anything to go by, next week's clash is going to be a show stopper for sure and given this is the first time the two teams have gone head to head, this cements our belief that our talent pool of young up and coming players in NZ is growing."

Both teams meet again, at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura on Saturday, 8 October at 3.15pm

NZ Residents 18s: 28 (Esera Esera, David Fusitua, Trent Bishop (2), Kurt Robinson. Conversions Honeti Tuha (4). Australian Secondary Schoolboys 26 (Pat Mata'utia, Nene McDonald (2), Luke Vescio, Jake Trbojevic. Conversions: Sam Harold (3).

Match Officials: Sam Perkins (Auckland), Jamal Thompson (Auckland) and Berni Carter (Auckland)
