Throwback Sundays

Three days into 2021 and I'm itching for the season to start.

To take the edge off I'm going to post a classic throwback every Sunday until 2021 gets started.

First up is a brutal battle in 1990 between Balmain and Wests in horrid conditions.

Bring back the biff!

Sorry, the teams were nicely formatted until I hit submit.

The hookers are a good match for each other, well off field, not playing wise of course.

Great footy brain on that young Western Suburbs # 6.
Would make a fantastic first grade coach when his playing days are over.

Number 7 for wests would also make a good nrl coach. Number 7 for Balmain could really provide deep insightful analysis for fox.
Only watched the first half so far and gee I miss 80s 90s footy. I do wonder if I was younger if I would fall in love with the game now

I honestly can't believe he doesn't have a gig

Any team that can't win a premiership should be giving him a call ASAP

Balmains nemesis playing in No 11 for Wests.

Steve Jackson was tough as nails, and obviously broke ours hearts in 1989.

But my 'players player' in 1990 is Bob Lindner.

What a legend!

He was a swiss knife in the Kangaroos squad, a team that fought hard to defeat the Poms and Frogs.

Lindner came off the bench for the first 4 games but then played multiple positions and was eventually named player of the tour.

His best footy throughout his career was at lock and that's why I reckon one (or two) good locks are crucial to our WT pack.

Back to that 1990 tour, a young Brandy Alexander rocketed to another level - 14 tries, 50 goals, 156 points.

I'm going to post some classic Balmain, Wests, WT v Penrith games and AUS tours for Throwback Sundays in the coming weeks.

Bobby Lindner fan club mate ...loved him

Under 21's was the on;y grade that mattered

Jason Stafford ...was he from up Qld way ....Patty O"Doherty knew him from the Ipswich Jets day ...his old man Hughie was a very good footballer as well

Steven Hocking came down and trialled as well from Ipswich about that time

If we signed any bloke from Ipswich it should have been Gordon Langton ...easily the fastest footballer i ever laid eyes on ...bloke was in the 10.5's in his footy gear ...and in the 1986 / 87 he and Alfie killed club footy

I'll swear on my life he was quicker than JAC , way quicker than Renouf , way quicker than Corowa

The West v Penrith game when Skando made his debut was a classic knock em down drag em out affair

Yep you knew Skando was a good un when he came out of the blue with an ear to ear grin .....

One year on and the ladder in 1991 looked very different to 1990.

The Tigers and Broncos slipped out of the 6, the Penny Panthers and Eagles looked unstoppable, and the Fibro boys and Dogs had a chance to keep their season alive for the ultimate prize.

An absolutely gritty arm wrestle, Gillespie, Langmack and Taylor do there best to match the likes of Lamb, Folkes and Moore.

Crack a beer, get the snacks out and enjoy!

I just watched 10 minutes of that , and the thing that stood out for me was the lack of crispness in attack . Today , everything happens at speed and passes and runs , and decoys are all timed with such precision , as the defence is so good . Seriously , I honestly think if the tigers jumped in a time machine and played The Australian team from 1990 , the score would be 60-0.

That's a big call saying that he was faster than JAC, but I believe you.

So many exceptional players have been overlooked over the past 30-40 years, primarily because the ARL back then and the NRL now still don't have a clear and solid pathway for our regional and rural clubs.

If we want to grow our game it's time to start looking at the talent in our out-of-city bread basket.
