Tim Sheens’ return as the Wests Tigers’ head of football performance is a good move but management must uncover why they cannot attract marquee talent to the club.That’s the opinion of club legend Benji Marshall after the Tigers launched an internal review of their dismal 2021 NRL campaign.

Michael Maguire’s side finished a disappointing 13th on the NRL ladder after a disastrous 38-0 loss to wooden-spooners Canterbury on Sunday.It is the 10th straight season, and third under Maguire, that the Tigers have missed the finals.


Sheens, who coached the Tigers to the 2005 NRL title, is scheduled to commence his front office role in the coming weeks after signing on with the club in June.Marshall, who played under Sheens for 10 seasons, stopped short of declaring his former boss should replace Maguire as coach but said the 70-year-old’s return to Tigers headquarters is a step in the right direction.“I think it’s a really good move for a few reasons,” Marshall told Fox League’s NRL 360 when asked about Sheens’ impending return to the Tigers.

“Tim’s really good with juniors and development and teaching them the basics and bringing young guys through, I know that firsthand.“But also, he’s overlooked a system before where he’s signed new players and got the Tigers out of a similar position back in 2003 when he started and won a competition in 2005.“I think for the Tigers the big thing is they need to decide what’s stopping them from attracting players.“Is it just the fact that they haven’t had success or is there a disconnect between players not wanting to go there because if you look at teams like the Bulldogs, they haven’t had success, but they’ve been able to sign a lot of good players and (create) a vision for players to come to.“And I think for the Tigers they need to find out what that vision is and try and make it a place where people want to go as well.”

The Tigers have made a play for several marquee players including Latrell Mitchell, Josh Addo-Carr, Tevita Pangai Junior and Dale Finucane in recent seasons but have failed to lure any big-name talent.
Marshall, who was cut loose by the Tigers at the end of the 2020 season, added when asked to speculate on why players are unwilling to sign with the club he played 257 games for.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone specifically who was thinking of going there but just from the outside looking in there’s obviously a lot of media pressure around the Tigers, a lot of things get reported and just at the moment it seems like it’s not a happy place,” he said.“And players, I think the good ones, want to go to a place where they can see a vision or they can see a line that the club’s going to take that they might want to be a part of. “But at the moment the Tigers seem to have a lot of negativity around it and they need to find a way to get around it.”

Meanewhile, Paul Green's decision to step down as Queensland Maroons coach has sparked suggestions he could be set to replace Maguire at Concord.
