The Roosters did still have some stars, however JWH, Radley, Crichton, Teddy etc all missed games during the year for various reasons on top of their injury toll.
That side last night were exhausted because they busted their backsides to make the finals. THAT is the difference between their also rans and us. Our squad did not excert the required effort to win on many occasions this year.
Yeah read this on the NRL subreddit. The Roosters 2021 season summarised:
They used 34 players in total.
Made most errors and had worst completion rate in the competition .
Had multiple retirements, multiple season ending injuries and key players constantly missing.
Somehow still did better than 10 other teams.
Tigers used 31 players, Storm used 32. Cowboys used 34, Bulldogs 35. Broncos used 36. Warriors used 34, Dragons used 33. Eels used 32, Souths 31.
I think it's a bit of a myth how "deep" the injury toll was. Roosters had key injuries, prominent injuries, but didn't use particularly more players than anyone else. The average was something like 32 players per team in 2021.
C'mon @jirskyr it's too early for me to get into it. Especially over another team?
Think mostly everyone's view on them has been despite how understrengthened they've been there's still been some immense effort. Which was what I was emphasising.
Yes they are a very good side. Yes they always hang tough and are competitive consistently all year.
Reality is though Roosters were never within cooee of the Top 4 sides and we don't know if they would have been barring injuries. Roosters have been flogged every time they've come up against a top 4 side - they are 1 win and 7 losses against the Top 4, for-and-against of 110 to 250. That 110 includes a 46-4 win over Manly Round 1.
I just want to say it one time for myself: a team that's already very good and with a very deep roster doesn't impress me when they carry on despite a serious injury toll. The team that Roosters ran out last night, despite being tired and humbled by Manly, was arguably better than any side fielded by Tigers in 2021. That's not a slight on the Roosters, it's not their fault their team is so good, but it's not impressive to keep winning with a backup side better than half the comp's first-choice side.
The fact they were easily handled every time they met a Top 4 side - tells you exactly where they are at. Completely speculative whether or not a full-strength Roosters can compete with the Top 4.
Also illuminating that once you strip away a bunch of established first graders, a team of younger and inexperienced players tends to get heavily defeated by decent sides - many of the Roosters' results became blow-outs despite the fact they didn't stop trying.
For example last night Roosters got done by 36, in a finals match, the most important match of the year. Tigers never fared worse against Manly, though we were resoundly beaten both times.
I think for most, this season could of been a repeat of 2016 for them, when at the duration they ended up finishing 15th. But some how since that time then, Robbo and the senior group squad has managed a mass injury toll and snuck in a mini rebuild of the playing group but still remain competitive.
They may of been fodder to every side above and including parramatta but there is no denying they easily accounted for the teams below them.
Very good and accurate post.
