Michael Maguire’s time as Wests Tigers coach is on the brink of coming to an end with the Tigers closing in on making a call on the under-siege mentor.

News Corp has learnt that Maguire is expected to have coached his last game unless there is a last minute shift among the club’s hierarchy.

Penrith assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo is the front-runner for the job, but it is unlikely that he will pursue the opportunity.

Instead Englishmen Steve McNamara and Shaun Wane, plus Aussie St Helens coach Kristian Woolf are among the leading candidates should the Tigers pull the trigger on Maguire.

The Tigers board met for the first time last week since the famed review into the Tigers’ 2021 season was completed. They asked for further recommendations from the football committee. Those recommendations need to be put to the board.

It will now be left to the board to make a final decision. While Maguire had some strong support initially, there has been a mood shift in recent days.

That shift could culminate in Maguire being axed despite two years remaining on his deal.

There is little doubt that the Tigers want to speak with Ciraldo. He has indicated he won’t pursue any opportunities until his commitments with the Panthers end, which will happen within the next fortnight.

The Tigers have put a total recruitment and retention freeze while they make a decision on their coach. They have been linked to Adam Elliott and Tariq Sims but are unable to make genuine plays for the back-rowers because of the ongoing uncertainty surrounding their coach.

Maguire’s position has come under fire because of the Tigers slide under his watch. They finished ninth in his first season in charge before dipping two spots last year. They slumped to 13th on the competition ladder this year.

Despite his lean record, he now sits second to Tim Sheens for the most games coached at the joint-venture.

Sheens was brought in this year and is expected to have an expanded coaching role at the club in 2022.

**If Maguire is sacked, the Tigers will be onto their sixth coach since Sheens was dumped in 2012.**

Poor Madge. I feel sorry for the bloke but I'm sure he won't miss the place if its true and in the mean time Brooks and Nofa seem safe. Hopefully its not the case and they follow him soon after. Those 2 players are a disgrace and the only thing consistent about them is there consistently poor performances. I hope its a proper review and not a one man witchunt.

Hooper reports Sheens is involved in the review as part of his new role at the club.

Rothfield reports he spoke to someone who advised him that Sheens doesn't know when he is coming here or what his role is with the club.

Mark Levy also likes putting the boot into the Tigers.
He’s such a light weight, he tried to emulate Ray Hadley.
There was a Mark Levy playing for Balmain in the 80s - not sure is he is the same guy but teams has to play-off during the week to decide who qualifies for the semi finals (no points differential back then) - anyway Mark Levy missed a conversion straight in front of the posts at full time for Balmain against Parramatta which would have seen Balmain qualified for the semis - (Balmain lost by one point as a result) —- the next year Levy went to Parramatta. Does anyone know if this is the same clown?

I hate the potential candidates. We're seriously looking at coaches who haven't coached a single game of NRL? Not a risk our club can take at this stage. Look at the credentials of Madge prior to coming to tigers, far better than any candidate mentioned.

And we've been there already: Mick Potter was the super league coach, Jason Taylor the cutting edge assistant.

Need someone who knows what they're doing and has done it before.

I still think Madge deserves next year.
