I have a question. Is it brooks who’s the issue ? Seems in the 7 years he’s been in first grade , ***everytime a player revolt happens he’s in the centre of it.*** I’m a believer in brooksy , but if my assumption is even partially correct , which I hope it isn’t , then for me personally , I wouldn’t have him there .

Really? Ive seriously never had that impression. He has always struck me as a meek shy guy and Ive never had the impression that Brooks was at the centre of a player "revolt".

Farah, Benji maybe, personally Ive never had that vibe with Brooks.

Me either . But I’ve also got a friend who could be the quiet type , but definitely didn’t mind the drama . I’m just inquiring as to why since 2010 this rears it’s ugly head every single coach .

Glad WT made decision and sad Benji is taking it the wrong way and allowing situation to be used by others for their own agendas. Still, denial is a human trait, especially when careers end is train. Common Benji, over the next fortnight think about it and your legacy. You can still meaning contribute to WT off the field too, in so many ways now much more than you can on field at this stage of things.

I love Benji but he’s probably caused more drama than it’s worth this season between being dropped and his future at the club. Not all his fault mind you but would he nice to have a season without the drama that always seems to surround our ‘club legends’

Chris Lawrence is the only one that has gone out well really.

**On that - is a club legend just someone who has played a lot of games for a club? Shouldn't success be a per-requisit for that label....**

Tom Raudonikis Wayne Pearce... There's many more

I just now listened to the Benji interview on 360. Seems to me Benji allowed the media to sack him. Interesting sequence of events.
Benji reads a news article stating he has been sacked.
Benji confronts Madge to verify his sacking.
Madge asks Benji for 24hours on decision.
Madge responds, telling him he has no offer of a contract in 2021.
Why would Madge play Benji this week if he didn’t fit into future plans?

This now leaves me wondering about the real reason behind the dismissal?

I don’t know why anyone really cares about “how it was handled”. It’s not as if they took him out behind the sheds or sent him to the glue factory. They told Benji, they didn’t tell Benji, the paper found out first, the manager found out first… it’s not a bloody soap opera, who cares?

Personally I was in favour of giving him another season, but Benji has been stretching the good-will very thin these past weeks simply on account of his performances. But I still thought having him as a backup was worthwhile, at the right price. And $300K is not the right price, that’s an emerging kid or half a quality first grader.

Nevertheless it appears majority of fans are in favour of not re-signing Benji; in fact it became fairly militant recently when the papers were reporting that Benji had a new Tigers deal on his desk to consider.

Who cares how it looks or how it reflects on Madge, or otherwise? I must have missed that course in coach training school where you tap a club heavyweight on the shoulder, a year or two before he thinks he is done, and it all ends up perfectly with a cup of tea and a handshake. Certainly worked out that way for Wally Lewis.
**> All this being said, I can’t seriously believe the suggestion that Benji had no idea the club was thinking about not re-signing him. I mean how naive must he be, he’s 35 and the team is not playing finals football in 2020. He must not be reading any social media because fans have been making the call for months on his behalf.**

Good luck to Benji, I have no issue at all if he spends a year or two at Bulldogs or Manly. If he does well, frankly he’s one of the few players going around that I’m happy to see succeed wherever he goes, having been such a prominent club serviceman. And if he does nothing, well it will be like Auckland Blues and St George again, no regrets whatsoever.

Agreed

The reason I think Madge is choosing him is because we just don't need anymore negative press and try and send him out the right way. I think you will find Madge would of wanted him next year but as the club has been unable to offload one of the other big contracts we have no choice as there is no room left in the salary cap.

Either way, given the current circumstances, it will be interesting to see if Benji gets another run before the final round? I’m guessing not, and the only reason he is in this team is because it was picked before Benji asked Madge to sack him.
As a footnote, Lee publicly stated his hope that Benji would do the right thing and retire.
I just don’t understand why? I mean Benji’s refusal to negotiate a better outcome for himself, as many others have done, like Ronnie , Farah and others?

I don’t see any NRL clubs offering Benji a contract. Maybe the warriors but even then I doubt he sees much game time.

Maybe consider Benji as a halves coach? Surely he would offer more from a coaching perspective than Hodgson.

I don't think that's a good idea. I think we need a few new assistant coaches but we should look external. Putting the old boys in positions isn't going to change any culture.

There are a number of ex NRL head coaches out there that would make very good assistants.

Agree avo.
Fans have been perplexed by the mental deficiencies of the team for years yet fail to understand the person responsible for the culture of the team, is the coach. He's got the biggest task at hand.

I have faith Madge can overturn the soft underbelly (within the playing group) but that the task also requires a lot of heavy lifting.
So if club management are dead set serious in supporting Madge's vision - of improving the functionality, performance and success of the team - I feel we need to bring in a Sports psychologist in addition to the best attacking/halves/assistant coaches there are available.

Well, their options have just improved, because the board has recently authorised an increase to the training budget.

However way you look at it and whatever was the actual sequence of events, the outcome has once again been unfortunate and has made the club look bad in many fans eyes. The media circus has jumped on it as usual and none of this recent rubbish helps us attract new players.
Being one of the clubs that is less successful seems to be a vicious circle and difficult to climb out of. Maybe there does need to be a draft or some other way of fairly distributing the playing talent. Otherwise it looks to me like patiently building a team of young talent over a few years, holding on to them and one coach's vision, is the only possible way to develop a winning culture and a destination that quality players will want to come to.

Cheers for that info.

Our biggest hurdle to being winners is to rely on a single person.. anew coach, a new player , a new ceo etc. we need a belief system which is bigger than anyone of us, a cultural identity which continues regardless of roster turnover. We need to have firm, well established, and achievable goals with a timeline pinpointing our small successes. It is imperative that all connected to the club have a shared vision of success and are rewarded accordingly.
It’s not rocket science or brain surgery. Winners are doing it every day of the week. Once a shared vision is established, it becomes the foundation upon which a team flourishes. At WT we haven’t seen real teamwork since Sheens left. Teamwork is a beautiful thing to watch, poetry in motion.

Anyone else see the blue wiggle on Twitter laying the boot in about how the club handled the situation by issuing a press release? What a moron. As if the club didn’t consult Marshall beforehand and asked him if he was retiring. Then there could have been an an announcement like there was for Lawrence. But he obviously wants to go around again for someone else, so what is the club supposed to do? This is on Benji, he could have just announced his retirement, had pics taken with his family, and I think even his most harshest critics would soften and be glad to wish him well. It’s going to be sad if he tries to hold out for another club and there’s no interest. Then has to retire, and it won’t be the way his retirement should have played out. Its making me angry the more I think about it. And the hide of the blue wiggle. Get a clue.

I dont care who leaked what or what the best way to announce that Benji wont get a contract next year is ....but Benji needs to go,he has had plenty of NRL experience to know that his defense, questionable kicking game and last tackle options dont make the cut in this ever changing and faster game as we know it.....
Please spare me the """ he is an icon,he is a legend,he is the face of the WTs and he should get another year....

Remember the Blues rugby union jumper in an interview..
Remember the games for the Dragqeens...
Remember the reserve grade games for the Broncos..

Remember we bought him back to the club he loves...but he left it for greener pastures when things didnt suit him..
For all who are shedding tears please go to Woolies and buy another box of tissues...

Benji had been given a lifeline by us and is not up to NRL standard anymore, the club and Madge are selecting him for his final games with us and all he can do is sulk...

He is a legend and wont be forgotten for his skills and playing prowess in the end time catches up with you..

Bravo TT, I had to double check I didn't write that, because it sums up my sentiments exactly, it is the club who have bent over backwards for Benji over the years, especially the last 3.
So to hear he is not happy doesn't change my mind one bit, it makes me love the club even more for finally having some courage to do what should have been done in 2018

I hate to say it or think it but on a superficial level, Benji seems to be the common denominator in all this.

Our club will perform better next year without another signing, just not having Benji there will improve the side, any signings will be a bonus

This will all stop when benji goes

My word it will, I have known this for 2 years, but I get accussed of hating Benji, when in fact I just want my team to improve, something that couldn't happen with Benji there

Lol

So the media leak the story that paints Maguire and the club in a bad light and then goes after Benji's reaction and now the fans are divided over being either sympathtic or not.
Good job media - you bunch of low lives.

Also, the talk of keeping Benji around to be a halves coach........not sure what the difference/improvement would be in our halves compared to now?
