Tigers keen to forget Bulldogs loss

Wests Tigers players insist their season-opening loss to the Bulldogs is merely a blip ahead of a successful NRL season.

The Tigers, touted as title contenders after a promising 2010 and with a roster brimming with representative talent, stumbled out of the blocks with a below par showing against a vastly improved Bulldogs outfit.

But senior Tigers Keith Galloway and Wade McKinnon believe the 24-14 loss is just a speed bump, and they're determined to turn it around against the Warriors on Saturday night.

"(It's) definitely not (the best start), we probably didn't play as well as we wanted to but it's only round one and we've got a chance to rectify it (against the Warriors)," Galloway said on Tuesday.

"… things just didn't seem to go our way. That's football.

"We tried to hold onto (the ball) and build momentum, but it wasn't to be."

Fullback McKinnon does not believe the Tigers were hampered by the pre-season hype.

"Nah, not really. I don't think anyone was thinking about that, we were just thinking about the game and out there playing," McKinnon explained.

"Unfortunately it didn't go our way.

"Not the best start to the season. But there's still a long way to go and it's only the first game, we'll put that behind us and look forward."

Coach Tim Sheens appeared slightly more concerned than his players, holding a three-hour session with his coaching staff to break down what went wrong before an afternoon video analysis with the team.

The Tigers will need to produce a turnaround without versatile backrower Liam Fulton, who will miss the game through injury, but will welcome back Bryce Gibbs (knee).

Galloway said Gibbs' defensive workload around the ruck was sorely missed as the Tigers struggled with a big Bulldogs forward pack.

"We probably missed his linespeed and definitely his dominance around the ruck in defence," he said.

Sounds like they were trying a grinding attrition playstyle against the Bulldogs, maybe this week they will go back to their more effective 2010 style?

Hopefully, the Dragons style just doesn't work for us. Also, it's boring.

It was interesting to note that Benji thought that the Tig's followed the game plan OK???????

I hate the Dragons way too boring, I don't mind us tucking the ball under our wing when we are in our 20 but after that please keep me entertained, love the Tigers brand of play, when it sticks we look like world beaters, when we play a diferent style it looks flat.

With all that said we still didn't get a flogging, we could have won that game if it wasn't for a tackle or two.

Sheens should be the one apologizing for us trying to play like the Dragons.

To play like the dragons we need a pin point kicker to build momentum and get back to back sets not hit the fullback or winger on the full every kick, we just cant get play that style when they are starting they're sets from they're 30 or 40 meter line. If we cant be accurate then kick it dead every set so that our deffence line has time to regroup and they start from there 20.

i believe we played ok in patches as sheens noted in aftergame press conf, we played a pretty boring flat game ,other than benji try, farah needed to have more options at the ruck we didnt even look like last years side that can hurt teams and tackle there butts off but that said, as we all have said it is only rd 1 and no panic just yet

the game was lost.
cannot change that.
defend well in warriors match.
did not look like they were enjoying themselves.
throw the ball around, if the passes stick the team will score alot of points.
take some chances, if they work, then good.
if they don't at least you won't go home wondering.
